I was lucky to spend some time this summer (winter there) in the South African part of the Kalahari.
"Kalahari is derived from the Tswana word Kgala, meaning "the great thirst", or Kgalagadi, meaning "a waterless place";[1] the Kalahari has vast areas covered by red sand without any permanent surface water." courtesy Wikipedia.
The salient parts of the trip:
- Awesome people, made a lot of great friends, to mention a few: Peter Mullinex, Pieter and Cindey Jordaan, Steve Hughes, Mr. and Mrs. Conradie, Cristo, sorry if I missed anyone.
- Amazing light, with insane sunsets
- Unbelieve wildlife and natural behavior
- Very remote location, hence clean air and no light pollution
- Was able to stand in 3 countries at the same time.
- Winter temperatures dipped to 32 degrees F and below
- Significant rainfall during the months prior to our visit, so the grasses where very plentiful and tall.
Would I go there again? In a heartbeat

Just some other items:
the Kalahari lions are bigger and more beautiful than their counterparts in other places, golden fur, bigger and males have amazing manes. The interaction and natural behavior of various species, swarms, herds, predator and prey, is at the most primal level and was amazing to witness.

1- the Kalahari lions are majestic, with golden fur and awesome manes

2- meerkat portrait - more of the meerkat story in the next post

3 - full frame Kalahari male lion. look closely to see the small cavity/dent in the tooth and saliva

4- red billed queleas in golden light

5 - Kalahari sunset

6- cheetah feeding on springbok

7- black backed jackal jumping over the water so as not to get its feet wet

8- oryx line up in golden light

9 - pale chanting goshawk

10- swallow tailed bee eater

11- Ostrich conga line

12 - springboks doing what they do, springing.

13- sociable weaver

14 - springbok in good light.

15 - the leopard look

16 - curious meerkat

17- you pick your right foot up and you do the slide - secretary bird.

18 - Sand Grouse - more later about their water collecting behavior

KD ! WOW - I was hoping you were going to post some images soon. It's been awhile since you have posted and all I can say is, it was worth the wait. Loved every one of these images. What a fantastic trip, great job (as always). I'm already looking forward to the meerkat story in your next post. YGMY !

Hi KD...

Such beautiful photographs of such a wide range of wild life from such a skilled photographer. #4, #6 and #15 are standouts for me, but all have earned my vote.

I was wondering how you stand in three countries at the same time with just two feet, then I thought that one foo could be standing across the boundary between two, and the other in the third (yes, I'm a nerd).

haha Tony, good thoughts. However all the 3 countries, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa, meet at 1 point called the Union's End and you can actually have 1 foot in all the 3 countries at the same time.
