I started using 300 cards back with the X-T2 and have used them since. Fujis love to lock up with anything slower.

Yet shoot with Z9 and now got the X2H. Nothing wrong with it IMHO just saying. Photog matters but gear can also help, sometimes quite a bit. In old days, it probably took years of practice but now with latest tech, one can get a jump start. Good or bad, I don't know. I will still prefer old ways of learning slowly with different tools but if one can afford new gear and if it helps you, so be it.

BTW - Anyone have samples of people shots to share from this camera, at f1.4 etc? Thanks. Just want to see

I have shots where my subject was moving erratically at times and in spite of me not being in the best position, the camera absolutely came through, but I don’t usually shoot wide open like that, because unlike Jared Polin, I want my whole subject to be in focus. I have stills with the 1.4 aperture, or at least slow moving subjects, if you want to see any of those.

Curious to see some samples. I’m dubious that optically that lens will hold a candle to the Z 100-400 which has some of the nicest falloff of any midrange tele.

I have never had a Fuji lockup on me, that’s really interesting that you should say that though. I did purchase both of my Storage cards using the Fuji recommended list though, so it might be something to do with that, in this situation.

I've had every Fuji I've owned lock up on me. Once I moved to Sandisk 300 cards, it became very rare. It was always in AF-C and highest burst rates when the buffer was filling/full.

Been using two 150 MB/s cards in my XPro2 since I got it. I do not recall a single lock-up.

There's a lot of mythology about cards. Basically, if it meets the camera specifications and comes from a reputable vendor it will be fine.

I’m in the same boat with my X-T2 (Sandisk 150mb/s 64gb x2). Given, “lock up” can mean a few different things - of course it stops shooting for a short time, but it doesn’t fully freeze.

For some reason the 95mb card never choked on my X-T30 but the 170 did. Unsure why that is.

Thats interesting - I'll have to do some tests with my X-S10 - I have a whole load of those cards - a mix of 95/170 cards (I see the newest are now 200MB/sec but I haven't tried those yet) - not noticed problems to date with either type of card - but haven't properly tested.

Ahh okay, that makes sense. I don’t think I’ve ever used their highest burst rates myself so I can see that being an issue.

In the case of Fuji, it has less to do with the cards, and more to do with pushing these underpowered bodies past their limits.

In this thread, quite a few people had luck turning off uncompressed files: https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1450289/1

In other threads, some felt 3rd party batteries were to blame. In many cases, getting a faster UHS-II card helps stave off the lockups long enough where many stop seeing them.

There are even threads on GFX lockups. It's a very Fuji thing. I can recall 2 lock ups with Sony over a 4 year span covering 3 bodies, vs at least one a month on Fuji. The scary part is the Fuji lockups require a battery pull (the power switch does nothing) so you risk losing files on the SD card. I did, a few times.

While you can find a few threads about "problems" of all imaginable types with just about anything...

... after following Fujifilm threads for about a decade, this is the first time I've heard anyone claim a generic Fujifilm with lockups. I can't say that it never happens — I've seen occasional lockup reports from users of every camera brand.

After seeing a number of your posts with your "impassioned" evaluation of the brand, I started to wonder which Fujifilm gear you rely on that is giving you so much trouble. So I took a look at your profile, where you list your gear:

Nikon Z7ii
Nikon Z 35
Nikon Z 14-30
Nikon Z 24-120
Nikon Z 100-400
Helios 44-4
Mamiya RZ67 Pro II
Mamiya 50mm
Mamiya 110mm
Yashica T4

Hmmm.

Perhaps your reliance on "threads" and "quite a few people" comes from something less than extensive personal experience with Fujifilm gear? If so, why are you on such a tear about Fujifilm?

I'm using a variety of SanDisk cards on my Fuji bodies, from Ultras to Extremes. The aforementioned "Extreme Pro" V30 (hate those SD specs) lives in my X-T4 (and presently the X-H2S). My X100V and XT20 get bog standard "Ultra" cards, and my XPro2 (which only sees SOOC JPEGs) is even using a MicroSD card.

I've never had any issues with lockups (writing data or otherwise) on any of my Fuji cameras, except the weird "pause" freeze I just got on my X-H2S. I'll grant that was likely the result of me trying to pump too many MB/sec through a non-exotic SD, and I expect I won't have that issue when I test with a CFE. If the X-H2S faceplants with the same CFE that my Z9 can't manage to outpace, I'll note it here.

FWIW, I shoot either lossless RAW or JPEG on my Fuji cameras.

EDIT: I just put my Lexar CFE in my X-H2S and fired 200+ lossless RAW frames in CH-15 electronic shutter pre-shot C-AF and had no issues. It flushed quickly, I had no stutters or lockups, and I could pump the shutter as quickly as I wanted and not confuse the camera.

The freeze issue I had a few days back appears to just be a buffer flushing issue caused by my SD card being too slow for 15fps RAW.

The X-H2S has the same resolution as Fuji's current bodies, and I don't think anyone is claiming it is going to have any kind of significant image quality improvement. I can see wanting to know about autofocus, but I don't think there's any image quality improvements we should be judging?

Given that the only real sensor difference is that the new sensor has faster readout, the only interesting test I could figure for an X-H2S would be to compare its electronic shutter LED flicker resistance to a Z9 and an X-T4 to place the X-H2S somewhere on a performance spectrum. But I saw the measurebater feeding frenzy for that one when the Z9 was released, and I'm certainly not going to be the one to feed the trolls about the horrors of electronic shutters.

Where did I say anything about IQ? I'd like to see some action/BIF shots, since I assume that's why people are buying this camera.

Always the Fuji fanboy, Dan. It's a Fuji problem, and one they've never addressed well over the years.

How many times must I tell you I still have a Fuji body? Although, with the Z50 in the house, it's about to hit the B&S. I haven't listed it in my profile in years because it's such an insignificant part of my kit.

I guess I assumed that if you're looking for image samples, it's for image quality reasons.

As far as AF goes, as soon as there's a single sharp BIF shot shown with the X-H2s you've proven it's possible. After that it's all up to user impressions, and we get into the fun game of people judging whether or not another photographer's idea of "good" or "bad" matches theirs, and whether or not the photographer in question even knows what they're talking about.

Not trying to be obstinate, but great photos don't mean the camera is great, and crappy photos don't mean the camera is bad. As I've only had time so far to get a few crappy photos, I'm definitely not going to post those.

Regarding the threads you link to, congratulations: you used the search function and found five thread since 2016 mentioning a Fujifilm lockup. That's less than one report per year.

Thread 1: the person's camera froze one time. The poster was unable to reproduce the problem again. (In the thread the person also reports similar a similar problem with a Canon body. Do any Nikon cameras ever freeze up?)

Thread 2: One post and no follow up by the OP.

Thread 3: From 2016, with early copy of the XT2. Sounds like a firmware update addressed the rare issue.

Thread 4: Poster figured out it was a bad card that locked up other devices, too. (Oddly, after the poster reported that the problem was resolved, some guy offered: "Lockups are Fuji's greatest weakness. Most of them can be mitigated by moving to 300mb/s UHS-II cards." Oh, that was you! ;-) )

Thread 5: Not much to go on here, and OP never reported final outcome. Sounds like a problem camera and a warranty issue?

Normally I wouldn't go this deeply into the "if you don't believe me, read all of these posts!" links, but I'm getting a feeling about this that I wanted to verify.

1. The "Fuji fanboy" comment funny, given the amount of flack I get on this board for my criticisms of Fujifilm. These include my skepticism about some of the marketing aspects of the XH2/XH2s models, my critique of the XPro3 marketing and design (and decision to continue using the XPro2), my points about the minuses of the GFX system that, for some users, counteract its real pluses. The "fanboy" tag is also one of the lamest cheap shots in camera discussions. Means nothing.

2. What's the opposite of a "fanboy?" Whatever it is, when it comes to Fujifilm, you might serve as a case study.

3. You have a Fuji body. I suppose that this — and reading lots of reviews? — carries more weight than the experiences of those who use and have used the system for significant photography for a long time.

In the end, it just seems a little... odd... that you spend so much time slamming Fujifilm. It's fine that you don't like the brand, but the obsession with telling mostly satisfied Fujifilm users how awful their gear is seems... well, odd. You seem to be on a bit of a crusade here.

Dan

Alright, whatever. I'm not interested in this overwrought handwriging about who is going to spawn what discussion. I'm just curious about real world impressions and IMAGES of this thing in use. I've never seen this kind of hesitancy of discussion around any other body on FM before. It's not like I have any intention of buying the thing, but I was hoping for Fuji shooters' sake that it would wind up being the body that finally made action and wildlife a possibility for them.

Between summer camp pickup and soccer practice dropoff, a friendly Mourning Dove landed on my deck. He even sat for me as I opened the door and screen, and let me fire off a few photos.

You can see the bird was shaded, but had some sun on his back. Not great lighting by any means, but better than the hard sun and 100ft photos that I have managed until now, and probably the only opportunity I'll have to use the lens for at least a week.

One thing I noticed with the X-H2S is that Lightroom's default RAW sharpening is not even close to appropriate. It's easy enough to create a sharpening preset, but it made me wonder if LR's processing is also poor for the X-H2S, as is Adobe's reputation with X-Trans sensors. So I shot a RAW, and then used the camera to develop a JPEG. This photo is both of them, side-by-side in LR's compare view. This is a 100% crop at 600mm wide open. RAW on the left:

https://i.imgur.com/jCNVw1a.jpg

I also have a frame at ISO500 and another at ISO2500, and there's no significant noise or resolution difference.

I hope this helps someone out there.
