p.6 #1 · Pixii - Digital Rangefinder Camera

I do wish Pixii the best and hope they can survive in the very niche field of APS-C range finders. It's a very tight playing field with new/used Fuji x-pro2/3 and used Leica RFs' to choose from. From a marketing standpoint, I just found the Pixii about $1K too much and lack of an removable storage deal killers.

I admit, I'm a FF convert, and if Pixii came out with a FF model and removable storage, I may bite. Heck, I'm twiddling my thumbs on the upcoming Sigma FF Foven.

To be fair to Pixii, the Leica M8 was a 1/4 baked product, and the M9 was a 1/2 baked product.

It was only with the M240 that they got the recipe right, and then with the M10 did they start to perfect it.

Indeed but when you're the only one doing the baking it is not half baked...it is just cooked differently.

I never understood Americans' obsession with soft baked cookies. They are not soft baked! They are not done!
As for eating raw cookie dough? You do know that man discovered fire in the 1960s, right?....

Ha, they're not undercooked, they are made differently with some different ingredients.

The kind that stays soft if you don't cook them enough?

Ya know getting any real feedback on the Pixii is hopeless if the conversation has shifted to soft baked cookies.

We Yanks like our politics, tax codes, public transportation systems and -most of all- cookies, half-baked!

According to my 'sources' i.e. a friend who still reads rff.com, we're not reading user reviews because of buyer's remorse.
Cannot reliably focus fast lenses wide open due to short RF base length, really buggy software and poor battery life seem to be the main complaints amongst others.
Also when attempting to return the camera some are complaining about losing $400 due to some shipping/customs shenanigans.

That $2400 M240 is looking sweeter all the time!

I tested the Pixii for a couple weeks and to me the major disadvantages were the crop sensor (meaning your M lenses are not used to their full potential), the inability to use diopter lenses which for many shooters is crucial for RF focusing, no Auto-ISO and the weak battery life. The software was not ready either but I tested a pre-production model.

The APS-C sensor performs well and the camera is well-built and quite compact though.

For a similar price, I would go for a used M240 and not look back. I much prefer a RF with a mechanical shutter.

Kinda like elec cars..
Pixii not all that ready for prime time..
Maybe in a few years..
They really should have thought it thru more..
And just made it more like a Leica MD and have done w/it.

p.6 #14 · Pixii - Digital Rangefinder Camera

I own the Pixii V2. I don't really have a library of images to share here yet, because I've just been using it casually for family stuff, but I can give my impressions about the issues others have raised here, and explain a little bit about why I'm happy with my purchase.

1. Reliability of focusing fast lenses: I came from shooting an Epson R-D1 regularly, and while I don't know off the top of my head if the base length is better or worse than the Epson, I can say that the difficulty of nailing focus on these cameras strikes me as about equal--which is to say it's not a piece of cake, but it's also not remarkably hard. It's slightly harder than it was on the M9 I shot for a while, but not enough to matter, and perhaps made up for by the fact that the Pixii rangefinder was super-accurate out of the box, and is very easy to user-adjust.

If people are indeed frustrated by this, I would suspect it's due to a combination of having a fairly high-resolution sensor and no back screen/no live view. That simply increases the likelihood of a few duds, and I think many rangefinder aficionados have probably gotten used to using live view to avoid those duds in tricky focus situations. When these backup methods are taken away from them, it's easier to blame the equipment than themselves. I've never shot an M-D 262 or M10-D, but I would wager that someone who has gotten good results from those cameras would be significantly less likely to find the focus experience on the Pixii frustrating.

2. Battery life isn't great. If you remember what it was like to shoot on the first-gen A7X Sony bodies, I'd say you get about 150% of that here--even though you don't have a screen or an EVF. Doesn't bother me, but it's certainly a disadvantage compared to other options on the used market.

3. Haven't experienced software problems myself, but I also don't use the smartphone app, so I'm not pushing the camera's firmware to perform its most complicated tasks.

4. Don't buy it if you need diopter flexibility.

5. 24 or 25mm lenses match the entire OVF nicely, so the camera can/does work reasonably well as a 35mm-equivalent, assuming that the type of subjects you're shooting isn't very demanding from a parallax-compensation perspective.

I'm a 40mm guy, I hate looking at screens in general--including on cameras--and I like to support businesses that don't make me ambivalent about their use of my money. I also love OVF cameras (I'm indifferent about rangefinders as a focusing mechanism/experience. They're fun but they're also terribly slow and generally inaccurate), but DSLRs are generally too big and obtrusive for my use, so Fuji and rangefinders are where I end up. I prefer autofocus, but the list of wide-aperture Fuji lenses that are genuinely small enough to match the X-Pro cameras is pretty short, so I always keep one Fuji body and one rangefinder.

So I'm just glad I can get a half-decent rangefinder that shoots well at 40mm-equivalent, brand new, from a small business, at a price that--while not competitive with companies that benefit from much larger economies of scale--is not astronomically or insultingly uncompetitive.

Thanks for your impressions! If you are ever open to meeting up I am in Philly and frequently in MD, I would love to see a Pixii in the wild...

Sure, shoot me a PM and we can exchange email addresses. I am in NZ for work until mid-November, and after that will be gradually relocating to western NY, but will be in the DC area for a few months in between if you happen to pass through.

Getting a software AND hardware upgrade for the camera you already have is pretty awesome.
