p.12 #1 · Pixii - Digital Rangefinder Camera

Oh believe me, I wasn't replacing the M11. I sold my M11 last year. The M11 was fantastic, I loved the images from it, and now regret selling it, but I had so many cameras, and something had to give. I've got a Q2, which I love as well, and I'm hoping at some point they will produce an EVF-M. If they don't, at some point I'll probably buy another M11.

I finally convinced myself that trying the Pixii was worth it, and I guess in some sense it was, as it really illustrated that it isn't the camera for me.

You obviously got a defective camera - there's no way it is even close to be workable.
I think about the Pixii every now and then, and then a report such as your comes along, and there's just no way I would want to take there risk, even if I can return it. The reported problems, even from the beginning, are all still there.

p.12 #2 · Pixii - Digital Rangefinder Camera

When I tested the Pixii last year, there wasn't any automatic functionality, so despite having an electronic meter, exposure had to be set manually. I'm unsure if that has changed with the new model, but it was one of my improvement suggestions. Also, the communication with the phone wasn't perfect back then, and I'm not certain if it has been made more reliable now. It doesn't seem to be. So, perhaps it's not a defective unit, just one where the rangefinder wasn't tuned well, but that's something that can even happen with brand new Leica cameras. There's also a possibility that your lenses are not perfectly calibrated, which is not uncommon with M-lenses.

Maybe that's different in the newest model, but the one I tried out worked similarly to a Leica M6 with a built-in meter, though you still had to manually set the exposure.

Well yours would not be fully manual. It would have a Hussometer which is a very accurate instrument.

The problem with the Hussometer is it tends to lean to overexposure, which is also why I have issues finding female subjects.

“Hey Huss, how come you cry every time you try to talk to a girl?”

“I think I am allergic to pepper spray”

Maybe you should try and buy a TV or two from them...

The latest camera version is advertised as having an "automatic speed mode", which does sound like Aperture priority mode.

That to me sounds like auto ISO, so it will still be in manual exposure mode.
If it had auto exposure, 99.99999% of people will call it auto exposure/AE.

I would think auto ISO would be called "automatic ISO". But I dunno. I'm not French.

Quote from the Pixii user manual: "Manual mode: turn the button to select the exposure speed, the speed is reflected on the adjacent screen. Auto mode: position the index of the selector on the 'A' position: the camera will automatically compute the exposure speed."

On the Pixii Plus page, it says "EXIF support for lenses using an external VF." How does this actually work?

Related to this, if they can come out with an EVF attachment in the future, it would be amazing.

But would it? There are plenty of APS-C cameras with EVFs that you can use M mount lenses on.

Fuji makes a few in the rangefinder style.

Yes, that's true. But none is as cool as Pixii+

I simply like the whole philosophy of Pixii and what they are trying to do. If I wanted to just mount M lenses then there is adapter for almost any big brands and none of them is Pixii.

But is Pixii rough on some edges? Yes, of course, plus it's not FF, but I support not just underdogs but also futuristic and forward-looking companies, which bring consumers with more choices and options in the long run.

If Fuji made the Xpro series with a real optical RF as well as the built in EVF, they'd blow everyone away. They could as they have experience building rf cameras for decades, the most recent being the Xpans.

Believe me, I am dying for Fuji to release XPro4 with the 40MP sensor and perhaps IBIS this time, which would make it my dream camera. But still, the cool factor of Pixii cannot be taken away.

What is the cool factor? Users have reported so many problems.
Is it because it is the only other real digital rangefinder camera sold new?

Cool factors are to each their own:

- French company
- Mobile app
- Upgrade-able
- Space Gray
- OLED control screen
- magnetic eyepiece
- "extended" rangefinder
- "EXIF support" -- not sure how this is done
- silent electronic shutter
- Mono DNG
- 64-bit processor
- built-in memory
