p.2 #1 · Pixii - Digital Rangefinder Camera

Same here, I really like the concept, and if you can get over the quirks I can see this being a fun camera, that being said a new camera is probably the last thing I need right now...

I have an Xpro3 as well as Leica Ms, and the Fuji is nothing like them apart from in shape, because it does not have an optical rangefinder. Don't get me wrong, I really like the Fuji, but what it is, is an AF camera with a hybrid optical VF.
Oh, but it does have built in diopter adjustment!

Well as a lifelong M film user my take on my Xpro2 is that my view through the optical finder is VERY like and at least as nice as my M6 was, and that outweighs the lack of a rangefinder. The manual focus procedure is slower and less satisfying, but at least not at the mercy of mechanical adjustment, focus shift, curvature of field, inaccuracy with long or fast lenses etc.
What it is, is an OVF camera, with an electronic rangefinder, and an electronic viewfinder for when the OVF runs out. Oh, and it has AF too.
Its the OVF that has always defined the Leica for me, quite a few didnt have a rangefinder, and I often didnt use it with wider than 50mm
I wont pretend it is a replacement for an M10 but certainly even less so is this Pixie

I do really like the OVF on my Xpro3. I bought it for that, to be used with my primary focal length - 40mm - which in Fuji world is the 27mm lens. And the frame lines in the Xpro3 are perfect for that lens.

The Pixii with a 28mm lens would be the equivalent to the Xpro3 with the 27mm. But seeing I already have the Fuji, I should just use it.

I emailed Pixii last night and received an answer this morning. Impressive!

And…. Auto ISO is coming as a software update.

He mentions he found the rf patch tricky to use compared to his Leicas, but his friend didn’t.

I would like to see a pic through the VF so I can judge how bright/contrasty the RF patch is. Then again, I've had no issues with the Zeiss ZM, Bessas, Xpan 1 and 2 which are not as bright as Leicas.

It's actually very cool that Pixii includes instructions for adjusting the rangefinder if needed. Imagine if Leica did that...

Not to be repetitive, but is this was FF I’d probably give it a whirl as I prioritize camera color output, RF’s, being able to adjust calibration (!!), and innovation. I always welcome better IQ, but it’s really my lenses not being their native FL’s that kills if for me regarding APS-C.

Regardless, this second iteration seems to have matured in quite a few ways, and crossing my fingers for an FF version—3rd times a charm (I hope). Leica didn’t even go FF on the M8, and Nikon didn’t hit it till the D3xx generation.

Nice article about the Pixii from the online photographer:

https://theonlinephotographer.typepad.com/the_online_photographer/2022/04/pixii-rangefinder.html

Personally I dont really see why anyone would want a rangefinder with APS-C sensor. Unless it has the one of a kind rendering of the Epson RD-1.

And there wont be a full frame sensor any time soon from anyone but Leica - because only Leica has the patents necessary to make a sensor like that and still handle the resulting steep angles of incidence from wide angle lenses.

I get that you get a tactility from the direct mechanics and manual focus of the Leica M that you wont get with the Fujifilm X-Pro.

The X-Pro still does have the ability to see whats happening outside the frame though, which is that one feature that rangefinders are really famous for that neither regular EVF based mirrorless nor SLR offer.

If you use q2 with 35mm/50mm/75mm framelines, you can see what is happening outside the frame with 28mm as base evf view.... You can even adjust to the bigger size later in LR. Per rumors sites, q3 (next year) will also use the 61MP Sony sensor, so you'll get even more MP from the crops and better dynamic range/noise performance compared to Q2... 61MP will match to 26MP apsc Sony sensor that Fuji/Pixi uses...

I agree. Using the Xpro3 with the optical VF and AF makes the most sense, as it gives a similar experience to a Leica RF but offers AF. It also has the dials (including ISO!) on top that make it so nice to use.

I really do like the idea of the Pixii but..

Nice article? He doesn't review it, just gives his opinion on a camera he hasn't touched and points to old reviews!

I'd love to try one, and I understand they have that in a return if you don't like it policy. But that seems so wasteful on resources etc to ship from France to the US, to get shipped back if it is not 'liked'.

He also mentions in his disclaimer on bottom he owned a CLE and Hexar AF. And some of his gear was once owned by a famous person, so his credibility is impeccable.
