Some real gems in this grouping Jonathon.

I notice a Q2M and I think I read that you may have some of the same issues about the Q as I do. Great camera but for me I prefer a rangefinder and good DoF scales. So are you maybe thinking about an M 10 Mono at some point?

I feel as though I had to fight the Q2M every inch of the way to get some pictures I liked. I used to disparage the 28mm f/1.7 lens because of its extreme barrel distortion that is corrected by in-camera software. But in practice the lens is a perfectly fine fast 28mm lens with pleasant OoF rendering. There are DoF scales but the only useful distance markings for street work are 2m and infinity so it’s impossible to set a precise focus distance. To say the face detection is laughably inadequate would be too kind. And I found the AF, no matter which mode I used, sometimes accurate and reliable, other times not. All in all, I think the Q2 and Q2M are competent though expensive travel cameras (but that’s hardly a compliment since I don’t have a high regard for travel photography).

As for the M10 Mono, the dealer from whom I get my used Leica gear will hopefully find one for me from his extensive customer base.

The M 10 Mono is a real gem....Good luck on your search. I picked up a demo. With the box and full warranty. I hope you will be as lucky.

These are truly excellent, Charlie. What gear did you use to make them?

So cool to see these old images. I love to see how people lived in different times and places and you've captured some great moments. Thanks for sharing.

The problem with my fellow posters is that all are so great. How do I single out one and not praise all?

Genji, you asked about the camera I used and I hesitate to answer because I was poor, grew up poor, and I started out with a Petri SLR w/50mm lens when all my peers were buying Nikon, Canon, Topcon, Minolta, Pentax, and others. If anything differentiated me, it was that I went out and photographed while my peers mostly sat around and talked about their gear. I was more interested about Japan and the people and photography followed along. Japan is now my second home.

I realized now that there are some long timers here beside me. I would love to see what you have seen, what you have done, what you are doing with your past. It would be nice to have a new forum, life on the street, and maybe an old film category. Not for just for us old timers but on old processes, the changes we have seen, what we are doing for our legacy, old histories and new ideas. And not just people photography, I have always considered me to be a sociologist with a camera and I find the streets you have photographed just as fascinating as the folks on them..

Charlie,

Your film images are some of the best scans that I have seen. They are super sharp, clean and really well done! Keep posting, I am thoroughly enjoying seeing Japan in the 60's. I was there myself several times over the years, a super country.

Charlie, I didn't mean at all to imply by my question that the gear has a significant influence on the quality of one's pictures. I was curious because of the period when you made them. I myself have spent a lot of time in Japan and love seeing fine photographs taken there. Interesting that it was a Petri SLR. The father of the great love of my life brought one home for her after an overseas business trip. I could be mistaken because it was a long time ago but I seem to recall that it had a leaf shutter rather than the more common focal plane shutter.

Colonial Williamsburg street scene shot from and alley looking towards the main drive known as Duke of Gloucester St on a very overcast winter day.

Nikon D5
1/400 f/16 ISO 6400
12:13:03 PM
dimensions 3199 x 3198

Normally would use the 200mm f/2 vr with a very shallow depth of field for what it is most known for, but lately have started using it more from the perspective of landscape for a deep depth of field, it does have limitations because of being almost telephoto at 200mm, but the image quality across this lens is amazing. This was hand held focusing on the alley before the crossing main street , know it could be done better with more preparation, but still, like the effect, mood and feeling. Image has a crop as shown by dimensions.

Appreciate you feedback,

Thanks,
rand

I'm not a big fan of street work with long lenses. I feel there is always a detachment created by the distance for the viewer when the photographer is far away. To me good street photography is up close and personal. In most cases using the elements in the frame to create an interesting image. Not blowing out the backgrounds with shallow DoF. Using the environment and the elements in that environment to give the image real context. I had conversation with Costa Manos once and he said to him a 50 was a long lens ha ha, I feel the same.
Thats my 2 cents....
