p.1 #1 · L Bracket for A7 IV

I'm looking for an L bracket for my new A7 IV and am a bit confused. The only one I've seen any mention of as being for the A7 IV is this SmallRig which they list as fitting Sony Alpha 7 IV/Alpha 7 SIII/Alpha 1.

However, there are many other options for the A1 and A7 SIII like RRS or Kirk and others. Do those also fit the A7 IV?

I'd expect that there will be more on the market in the near future that are specifically designed to fit the A7 IV, but I'm curious if the bodies are similar enough that these others fit as well. I ask because I'm currently swapping out my whole kit from Canon DSLR to Sony mirrorless and have a trip planned in February. So I'm trying to get my lenses and all accessories purchased in the next few weeks so I need a bracket now.

I think I'd prefer a more compact lighter bracket than that Smallrig. Something like the RRS ultra light (click on "Ultralight Design (One-Piece-L-Bracket)" below the price) brackets. But not sure if there is something like that that'll fit.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

The A7 IV, A7S III, and A1 all have very similar bodies. It looks like small rig decided that the bodies were close enough that they didn't need to make an L bracket specifically for the A7 IV. Other companies still might or they might not decide that their L bracket for the A7S III and/or A1 is close enough.

EDIT, confirmed below that this version doesn't fit the A7 IV according to smallrig.

I'd be shocked if most of the ones designed for the A7S III don't also fit the A7 IV (though I did see one person on YouTube have to slightly file a bit of a camera cage around the strap lug to make it fit). I've seen people on YouTube using A7S III accessories without issue on the whole.

My personal favourite design would be this one https://www.smallrig.com/smallrig-l-bracket-for-sony-alpha-7s-iii-a7s-iii-a7s3-3003.html as it adds less weight and stays completely clear of the battery door. I already think the last two generations of bodies have gotten too big, so I don't have the need to to extend the grip down vertically at all.

The advantage of having a baseplate that extends under the battery grip is to provide a place for your pinky to rest for a more secure and comfortable grip of the camera/lens. I know that it has to do with the size of your hand. Personally, I would not buy/use a baseplate/L-bracket without the extension for my Sony mirrorless cameras. It was different with larger/bulkier DSLR bodies back then.

There was a thread not that long time ago on the same topic although it was for the A1. I would say about 2 months ago. I believe there was a reference to a brand Wepoto or Honglai from A****n. I know Steve @1bwana1 posted there. Maybe he can chime in?

If you can stomach the price, RRS offers something like a base plate plus an L-section. I bought mine for a fraction of that but it seems like it is no longer available.

Are you using the Smallrig 3003 on an A7 IV? Or using it on one of the other bodies?

I like this one too, and you can't beat that price. I think I'll have to give it a try. I don't have any need for the extra grip extension. I've only had the camera a week, but it camera feels just fine in my hand as is even with a fairly heavy Sigma 24-70 on it.

One question I have is relative to using straps with this L bracket. I use keep a Peak Design Clutch hand strap on the camera usually only use that. But I also have a Peak Design Slide strap that I use occasionally. Looks like no issue attaching the hand strap to the bottom of the L bracket. But I can't quite tell if I'll be able to attach another PD anchor link to the neck strap loop on the left side of the camera with the L bracket on for attaching my slide strap. I guess for $24 I can give it a try...

I've found my hand fits pretty well on the camera and I don't want to add extra bulk. Maybe my hands are small...

Am I missing something here? Is there any reason to spend 6x on the Kirk L bracket?

The Smallrig 3003 for the A7s iii is $23.90

The Kirk BL-A7S3 for the A7s iii is $145

The designs are essentially the same. The only real difference I see is the Kirk has the QD connection point. I don't use that, so it doesn't make a difference to me.

I ordered the Smallrig L-Bracket for my A7IV. I would have to trust their website as being correct. But I have heard of the A7SIII bracket not working on the A7IV. So, in a day or two we shall see when mine arrives.

Which one did you order? The 3660 listed as for the A7 IV and A7S III, or the 3003 which is only listed as being for the A7S III?

Either way, I'm curious to hear how well it fits once you receive it.

Out of curiosity, where did you order it from? Directly from them or somewhere else?

I'm not using it, it would just be the one I would order if I had an A7 IV. I've got a very similar looking one from Suiri on my A7R II.

I know you said smaller than the SmallRig, but the SmallRig I got for the A7IV doesn't appear to my eyes to be much more substantial than the RRS one you linked.

I can direct you to a post I made here showing a comparison of two models, one of which was from B&H for the A1, ASIII, A9II and the other directly from SmallRig specifically for the A7IV.

Looks like my link didn't quite work. There are multiple configurations available at that link. I thought it was going to the right one. The one I was referring to was the ultralight one piece bracket that does not include the pinky grip extension.

I did see your post earlier and it was helpful.

I am also facing the question right now. Besides the mentioned l-brackets, I also came across this one from ProMediaGear. Has no cutout on the side but is offset on the side probably something in front. Perhaps without cutout a little more stable.

They take the A1 bracket for the A7iv

I hadn't seen that one. That is an interesting way to deal with allowing full rotation of the screen. I kind of like the concept, but I'm looking to keep bulk and weight low. If it weren't for that, I'd probably give that one a try. If you do pull the trigger on that one, let us know how it works out.

I ordered the 3660. I was reading that the one for the SIII doesn't fit, or at least that's what some were saying.

I ordered directly from Smallrigs website. Total charge including shipping, etc. was $59. Right now? It's stuck in Anchorage, AK. And has been since Saturday! Was supposed to arrive today.

I was going to order it from B & H's website but the day after I saw it listed there it was no longer there strangely enough.

Interesting about your comment about B&H. I was looking at the Smallrig 3003 bracket yesterday, and B&H had it listed as in stock, for a few dollars more than the price directly from Smallrig. Now it is listed as "No Longer Available". Not just out of stock, but you can't order it at all through B&H.

Well, for anyone interested, I just chatted with someone at Smallrig asking if the 3003 would fit the A7 IV. They said no, it will not. I was curious why since the 3003 fits the A7S III, and the 3660 also fits the A7S III. Their answer was the side piece on the 3003 does not fit the A7 IV. Still seems odd to me, but it's their product, so I assume they know what they are talking about.

So, as far as I've been able to find, the only two L brackets out yet specifically for the A7 IV are the Smallrig 3660 and the Promediagear PLSA74T mentioned above. I'm looking for something compact and light, which neither of those really are. Looks like I'll have to go with the Smallrig for now till something more compact comes out.

Rogeti make a really really nice L plate (ca. US$100) and claim it's for the A7r4a, A7r4, A74, A7s3, A1, A9iii and A9ii. It will naturally depend on the brand design as to whether their design will fit your camera.

The Rogeti L plate is 87g and extends out when you want to add cables. Lovely design and top quality.

However Smallrig and Leofoto both make exellent L plates too, not quite to the Rogeti standard/design but they both cost way under half the price.

I'm using a Lennon L plate on my A9, never an issue and does the job well. And a LeoFoto on my A7r4 - also excellent, better than the Lennon IMO. Smallrig should be at the LeoFoto level, I compared them in shop, no difference except the SmallRig has more screw locations for attachments if required and therefore costs ca. 50% more than the LeoFoto.

Here's the link to the Rogeti on Taobao : https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a230r.1.14.44.44b9130fjFdaLG&id=652095859735&ns=1&abbucket=11#detail

From what I've seen, from a few L plates I checked out in person, the side AS attachment blocks the new placement of the cable sockets and prevents one or more of the doors opening. So it would come down to the individual design - which is why some (see the Rogeti I posted about above) can still fit the new A74 / A7r4 and others can't.
