36MP seems a likely popular scenario. I do like the choice of 60/36/18 if the IQ is there without too much sacrifice. Initially I expected lower resolution files might be brought about by some form of compression. But now that we know it's pixel binning and following some of the comments about potentially better DR at 36 and 18 vs 60MP--I've been Googling a bit more than normal. Interesting to think about higher DR 36/18 MP images taken at new and real ISO 64
Will default to 18M actually only enable 60M for reach and some fancy landscape. I think I will put this as one of program button, I will use it when I see the chance of use it (60M output).

If ISO 64 is indeed the base ISO, the Leica M11 could have higher DR than the Sony A7R IV at its base ISO but may do slightly worse at high ISO settings.

I understand 18MP was the long standing "sweet spot" until 24MP took over that popular title. What's your rationale for 18MP as your default ?

Not a pull but a native 64 according to David Farkas (around 11:50):
Yes but many said the M10 had base ISO 100 and they were wrong. From the site reviews, David seems to do meticulous testing so this could be right this time.

Just no any use for those extra pixels for snap shots I think it is reasonable to expect one of a few hundreds if not thousands images I took worth more than 18M. I think I will know when to select 60M when I see it. Which is exactly the feature I love about this camera.
My understanding of nxm binning is that rather than getting read_noise(single_pixel) + signal(single_pixel), you get read_noise(single_pixel) + signal(nxm_pixels). So if read noise is high, then you get a nice boost in SNR, which you cannot get if you bin in post. Back in my CCD astrophotography days, that was certainly the case. But I thought that read noise had gone down by 10x with CMOS, to the point where one might as well bin in post. Looking forward to quantitative tests on this topic.
Any idea when the monochrome version could be expected?

This is a killer M. I'd be so bummed if I recently bought an M10R.
I'm certainly curious about this new sensor.

What would be even more environmentally friendly than different black on aluminum is a sensor replacement option. Maybe they'll start doing that with the 12.

But if you downsample the 60MP file to 18MP in post you will get the same results (perhaps even better) with the benefit of higher detail if needed. The main benefit will be smaller DNGs.
Ah, I thought the tech was actually offering something different, not just downsampling. Oh well. Nice to have the option I guess. It sounds as if you'll still need higher shutter speeds than too and m11 will be more sensitive to vibration.

Basically pixel binning is a form of downsampling done in-camera.
I just read the initial impressions by Barnaby Britton and he mentioned that the M11's mechanical shutter is louder than the M10-P and M10-R. He though it sounded like the original M10: https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/leica-m11-initial-review#II
"Another small niggle is the M11's shutter sound. Several Leica M10 variants featured a redesigned, notably quiet shutter mechanism which I had assumed would be adopted in the M11. Not so. The M11's shutter sounds to my ear exactly like a stock M10. It's a small thing, and of course new in the M11 is a fully silent electronic shutter option, so whether this bothers you or not will probably come down to personal preference."

I guess we now know what the M11-P will be.
Black paint over brass with “improved quiet shutter”!
And now I come to the defense of Leica!
He has an issue w price? It’s the same as the M9 if you take inflation into account.
He has an issue with the optical RF? That is exactly why most of us buy an M! It is what an M is!
If you dont like it Leica has you covered with the SL series.
He has an issue getting sharp pics? I see plenty of awesome sharp M pics on this site alone, wide open. Not to mention my own amazingly sharp pics! ….
Then he says the ZM 35 1.4 is the best lens ever including the haptics and
ergos? I have that lens! My one complaint IS THE MISERABLE HAPTICS AND ERGOS! Optically awesome though.

I wonder if most M11 shooters will set the camera to 36MP as default resolution and only use 60MP sporadically or if they will use the latter all the time. Reducing resolution in post achieves the same or better results.
I think this works well for the diff between application of handheld vs. tripod, or low light / higher ISO vs. great light ... essentially a function of SS and technique, where 36 is plenty.
To me, knowing I've got 60MP in my bag, doesn't mean I have to use 60MP, but can feel comfortable when carrying just a single body, that if I come across something that deserves 60MP, it's there when I want it.

I am waiting, but I thought there was an actual IQ difference at less MP, or maybe that’s just marketing. I was hoping for a noisy difference too. If it’s just really downsampling, not that impressive to me (though handy).
I'm guessing that'll depend on how good the Leica algorithms are. Wonder if it will perform better for jpg application vs. dng application (for those so inclined).
