My understanding of nxn binning is that rather than getting read_noise(single_pixel) + signal(single_pixel), you get read_noise(single_pixel) + signal(nxn_pixels). So if read noise is high, then you get a nice boost in SNR, which you cannot get if you bin in post. Back in my CCD astrophotography days, that was certainly the case. But I thought that read noise had gone down by 10x with CMOS, to the point where one might as well bin in post. Looking forward to quantitative tests on this topic.
Any idea when the monochrome version could be expected?
