On the juvenile bald eagle with the fish shot which AF focus area where you using? I'm still experimenting with which approach is best in settings like that, so curious what you were using. Thanks!

That was 3D with auto recognition enabled! It didn't look like it got the shot but when I looked later bam it nailed it. Unreal!

Thanks. Yes it seems to me that sometimes even though the focus box looks like it is jumping around a bit in reality it is often/usually on target.

Can you reprogram the "key" button to be Playback?

Good thinking!!
This key button is also Fn4 button so it can be customized to the playback function. Thanks!!

Yes, Sony got it wrong on
- Review button placement
- Lens mount button placement and
- Lens mount direction (see the pic from this site- it's obvious Nikon has it right)

A few from this morning. Bird images are with Z9, 500pf and x1.4. So far so good, a lot to play witrh over the next several days but getting better already!

Everyone's images look good, but especially these.
If this is how good the z 100-400 is, I can imagine how good the z 200-600 will be!!!

THIS IS ME: Just thought you might find this useful - what I posted in response to another poster - if you're shooting with any lenses that have an LN button, even some F mount lenses - https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1734553/7#15811546 - might help you be able to do a quick playback reviews without taking your eye off the EVF.

I just thought of sharing the below flickr link where I posted straight out of camera images (Converted Raw to JPEG on Nikon Studio with the STANDARD picture control profile, other than that there are no other edits on any sliders like exposure, contrast, sharpening and no crop), all in camera adjustments like Vignette control, Diffraction compensation, High ISO NR etc were all turned off, just to give a fair bit of idea as to the SOOC sharpness, ISO, Colors etc.

I generally don't use flickr that much but that's one of the easier ways to link full resolution images

All images are shot with the Z9+FTZ 1 adapter on a NIkkor 500mm F4E FL lens, wide open, mostly using wide area L or 3D tracking modes with subject detection set to animal

This is the great thing about the trend towards highly configurable cameras. Put the functions you want, on the buttons that suit you best.

Make whichever button you like your "Play Back" button.

Repurpose your play Back button to do another function.

When the camera is in Play Back mode the other buttons can be programed to do things you would only want to do while reviewing images. Things like deleting, ranking, cropping, sending to a client.

When in shooting mode these same buttons do shooting functions. In video mode, they do entirely different video centric functions.

Very powerful stuff.

Yes, it will take manual reading, planning, experimenting, and setup effort. But, with the ability to save and load complete configurations to named files it is easy to try stuff out, and revert if you don't like it. carry a number of different configurations on your memory cards to load and swap at will. It is also easy to share setups with others.

In the end, your camera should feel and operate like it was custom built for you, your preferences, and the different use cases you encounter.

Welcome to the wonderful World of modern mirrorless cameras.

Yes. I really like how a lot of these buttons are customizable on this camera.

OK, wanted to try converters on the 500pf so went to the back yard. Here's a few all done with my normal post procesing, camera RAW and topaz denoise. Very happy, was cloudy afternoon.

Z9, Converters as noted and ISO as noted

Bluebird using x1.4TC, ISO 1100

Pine Warbler using x1.7TC and ISO 10000

Bluebird, using x1.7TC and ISO 10000

Fox Squirrel using x1.7TC and ISO 2500

Butterfly using x2.0TC and ISO 9000

Outstanding as usual. I have the 1.7TC but never use it. Need to try it!

Thank you for those, George. Lower ISO shots look great.

I'm not sure about the noise pattern on the butterfly shot, it almost looks like applied with a paintbrush. The bluebird looks great at 10000 ISO though - so I guess it depends on the scene.

Yes I think the scene might have something to do with it but that butterfly was shot using a x2 Teleconverter at that ISO. Not great but wanted to post it because I'm shocked it even works!

George,

I like what I am seeing with the TC's. I appreciate these captures to view! Now if I can just get my hands on a Z9.

Anyone know how to set blinkes? I am missing something obvious probably.

Blinkies for highlights? No. I don’t believe it’s available.

I just searched the User’s Manual for “blinkies" and it indicated it found nothing.

Just checking around, and it seems to be an important feature. Steve Perry thinks so too. in this link, he calls it the Overexposure Highlight Warning, or Highlight Alert

It can be set for playback like all Nikon DSLRs. What you can’t do is see it before taking a still photograph, only in video mode. Seems like a glaring omission I hope is fixed with firmware.
