Even when I over panned and the osprey almost felt off the edge of the frame, eye/head focus still works very well.
With 400/2.8S + TCx2s. The first two pictures were cropped a bit tighter than DX cropped. The last picture is approximately DX cropped.
Beautiful bird, Ganesh. We have a few of these here as well but incredibly rare and rather fickle and
each year tended to show up in different place
Hopefully I will have a chance to photograph them one day.

very nice photos suteetat
which AF mode you used to get good focus at the eye?
I use mostly auto area focus with animal eye detection on or large wide area AF with animal eye detection 99% of the time.
For raptors, auto area work very well most of the time unless the background is dark and busy then large area AF
is better. When osprey enters water, auto area is pretty much all I need.

Thank you @suteetat These are winter migrants from the Himalayas and I was very lucky this season to find a spot that I could visit few times. Extremely shy birds and photographing them in action was so difficult and this was the ultimate test for the Z9's AF system.

I don't do much BIF, as I am not into avian photography, but I do PIF shots. Here are some Players in flight with the Z9.
Love the af, how responsive it is and the blackout free viewfinder makes it very hard for me to pick up my other DSLRs.
These have been downsized as I only post 1080 on the web. These were from a 7on7 football tournament.
