p.5 #1 · Z9 and Z8 ! : A thread for Z9/Z8 images and *discussion*

i have always tended to separate the moving image from the still image in my shooting. in all the still cameras i have owned with that capability i just let it be so i could concentrate on the still life. i had the tools and trappings for the moving image but sold them off. just a few vestiges left to remind me.

Took out my z9 with 50/1.2s for a littel casual session in the evening.
Finally a camera that made 50/1.2s size looks reasonable

Low light AF has never really been much of an issue with Z system I think but Z9 speed took it
to another level.

Some quick shots taken in JPEG, edited in Lightroom. Mighty impressed with the AF, battery life and FPS among other things.

Nothing like some clutter, but I couldn't pass up a chance at a Bald Eagle. Fortunately I had some reach available this morning.

I hear you about the tools and trappings for the moving image.

Long time ago, I chose to go with Apple. So, I use iMovie only. There is a program called Final Cut by Apple and I hope to never get into it. iMovie is time-consuming enough as it is. I like that little video link I posted earlier. Not going to dig it up now, but essentially he says to start the video (Record), count to 10 and stop the recording. Then do it again.... and again. I do not like post processing. With video, I am hoping to shoot the clip on my subject and find that it is finished business. We'll see.

there's always the work after the fun. no getting away from it. . depending on what you're doing it can and usually is long and methodical with a pile of script notes. i started out on 16mm film at NYU.

So i took a quick tour over at the BCG forums for some more information about the Sigma 500 F4 on the Z9, as one of the users over there uses the combo. Apparently the Sigma is much faster on the Z9 than the other Z bodies. But it is showing some lock-on issues on distant subjects as well as some focus inconsistencies.

He will keep us posted, and i will relay the info for anyone such as me, interested in the combo.

Superb Fairy-wren.

I used 3D and Animal Detect. Nailed focus every time.

Lance,
I’m astonished by how you’re able to take as sharp of a picture if a bird with 1/125sec. Even with perched birds, I have to keep my shutter speed pretty high.

Super images of the Superb Fairy Wren Lance! Gorgeous little bird.

And the 500PF background looks just fine... natural.

Thank you very much TIM!

To be honest, there were many that weren't sharp, as the bird needs to be still also. However, 20 fps from the Z9 and some are bound to work. VR and IBIS also works well.

Thank you very much, Robert!

I have found the background from the 500 PF to be excellent in most situations.

Hey Lance both are beautiful but I personally like the first one best.

So getting mine tomorrow, what are your go to AF settings at this point? I know it's early still.

how was the af with the z9/600mm f4e combo?? did you see a noticable drop in speed when using teleconverter?
Was the focus acquisition just as good as a dslr with the z9 with the 600mm no tc attach??

Not yet, but I will be testing my 200-500 on the FTZII and Z9, when they arrive ... by mid-January.

Hey Rick, I want to hold judgement until I can get out and use it more.

My 1st impressions had me marginally concerned. I was at the lake early today and there was about 50% cloud cover initially so it was a pretty dull, hazy light - but there were areas of the water that had a beautiful purple cast. In that lower light, "it seemed like" the AF was sluggish.

However, as soon as there was a more consistent light (not necessarilly bright), the AF picked up to where I expected it to be - at least as good as my D500 and superior to any of my other Z bodies. When I added the 2xTC, it slowed a little but was more than servicable. In fact, with the 2xTC I'd say the 600F4 is faster on the Z9 than any other body I've used to setup on.

Having said all that, I really want to shoot more with it - both with & w/o TC's. It would be foolish to draw a conclusion on a couple hours of testing.

These are uncropped samples.

Thanks, hopefully I get mine by then. I just switched back to Nikon from Fuji, damn talk about a kick in the crotch selling all that gear and now with a smaller setup.

very interested in seeing more samples from the 2xTC with the 600E and Z9. Last shot looks really really promising.

I never had much luck with 2x TC on 500E + D500/D850.
