Let me see if this works. I'm not much of a gif maker, but this is quick fun while waiting for all of this to import:

The only way I was able to get my gifs to show up here was to upload them to Flickr and then use the BBCode link at full resolution. Then they showed live on the page.

It basically just seems to show it as a still on Flickr. arbitrage wrote:

I'm wanting to see if anyone can solve my problem in setting up a Recall Shooting Function (RSF).
Here is what I would like the camera to do:
My main shooting is done in full M. I typically have my settings set to more BIF so faster SS, wide-open aperture and an ISO to get me my exposure (typically high).
Then I want to set a button to RSF that makes the following changes:
SS: 1/320
ISO: Auto
AF-Area: Single
FPS: Low:10FPS
Everything else ideally can remain unselected and just match what I'm using regularly.
I know how to set all that in the RSF list. The problem I'm running into is that what I want to happen is that when I hold down the RSF, I want the camera to use Auto-ISO but base the exposure off of whatever my main camera's EC value is.
When not using RSF I obviously don't use the EC as I'm in full M. But I was hoping that the camera would use whatever EC value is set because I've selected Auto-ISO in my RSF list. I can't get it to do this. It just uses a zeroed value for EC. I can select EC in the RSF list but then that fixes EC at whatever value is selected in the RSF list.
I turned Easy EC On just to see if that helps (as I don't use that in normal M mode obviously). Didn't seem to change the behaviour.
Basically what I'm trying to do is use RSF to shoot perched birds, dropping my SS to 1/320 and letting Auto-ISO take over so I don't have to adjust ISO. But of course this only works if the camera uses the EC like it normally would in M+Auto-ISO. Right now the RSF is not useful for how I want it set. My only workaround is to shoot in M+Auto-ISO as my main setting also but I don't want to do that.
Is there anything I'm missing here? Ironically this was my #1 bug I found on my A1....I call it a bug for the A1 because all previous Sony bodies recognized EC when I used this exact same method. Sony finally fixed this in the latest A1 FW and made my shooting experience 100x better with the A1. Now I seem to be running into this problem with the Z9 and I won't call it a bug as it may very well be as intended.

Following this because that's something I've always wanted as well.
Since I don't really have any good spots for setting up a blind at the moment, my process is usually just walking around. I may kneel down or sit somewhere for 5-10 minutes if I spot something or thing there may be something, start walking again, etc...
As it is now, I generally keep the camera setup for BIF while doing that (depending on where I'm at), but frequently come across perched opportunities as well and it does waste time scrolling to iso64, turning auto iso on, lowering the SS, increasing or decreasing exp comp.

Yeah, for me it is a huge part of how I like to shoot. I always want to be ready for action or even if not shooting where action is possible I sometimes start off with a higher SS even for perched but then want that recall button for lower SS, lower ISO.
On past Nikon DSLRs that didn't have RSF I used the Extended Shooting Bank feature and had my 2nd bank were I dialled in the lower SS/ISO. Unless someone can figure out something I'm missing with how RSF works I will have to go back to that method. That method is okay but requires having to push a button and then scroll to the 2nd Bank.

Can you set up a shooting bank for this?
Yes, that is how I used to do it on my Nikon D500/D850 so that is what I will go back to if I have to. I've fiddled with everything I can think of this morning so looks like I'll start setting up my Extended Bank instead. I'm running out of easily accessible custom buttons though. The Z9 is still a ways behind the R5/A9/A1 button customization despite all its improvements over past Nikon DSLRs and MILCs.
I do wonder if Nikon added the D6's Recall Shooting Function Hold option if that would allow it to work as I want? Maybe if it toggled in like that function does then it would start recognizing the EC value? I would be curious if any D6 users can check if it works on the D6 using the RSF "Hold" option (not available on Z9)?

Yeah hopefully Nikon will have some additional changes that would help you in the FW update but that's a guess. They may be listening more to the userbase more now!

Hey Geoff,
Either I am missing something in your description, or you've got some sort of conflict in RSF setup.
I just tried what I believe you've described and it works as expected.
With the camera set and configured completely in Manual Mode, I added SS, Aperture, Auto ISO, Base 64, EC -1 to RSF.
When I press the assigned RSF button, all the setting change as expected, including under exposure.
If yours is behaving differently, I wonder if you have another setting that is causing a conflict.

I think the difference is I don't want an EC set in the RSF list. If I set -1 EC in the list then it does -1 as intended. But there is no way to quickly change that -1EC other than diving back into the RSF list. What I want is to only set SS, Auto-ISO, Single AF and 10FPS in the list. Then when I hold the button it will shoot at 1/320, my wide open aperture (or whatever I have it at but 99% of the time wide open) and Auto-ISO. But in order to dial in a correct exposure Auto-ISO needs EC (in a lot of scenarios) and I don't want to be stuck in -1EC (as per your example). I want to be able to change my main EC (using the top button and command dial) as needed depending on subject/background.
For example...I see a bright bird on dark background....hit RSF...goes to 1/320 and Auto-ISO and then I have my EC dialled in to negative something to expose the bird properly as the meter will overexpose with a lot of dark background. Alternatively aim at bright sky, dark bird may need +2-3EC.

Gotcha. I did not understand that from reading your original post. I did just try that and agree that when the RSF is engaged, the EC button + dial has no effect.

That "is" a bit of a bummer.

Thanks for confirming you see it doing the same thing. I'm trying to understand why someone would always want it to zero out EC when you are in a mode other than full on M? EC is the critical variable in all the other modes including M+Auto-ISO so you really need control over it and in a quick way....not menu diving into an RSF list.

Happy to "try" to help. Thank for your contributions as well.
I agree 100%, EC is critical when using Auto-ISO.
Did I understand correctly that you had a similar experience with the a1 but it was subsequently "fixed" in a firmware update?

Yes A1 was doing the same thing but that was IMO a true bug because all my previous Sony cameras (A9, A9II, A7RIV) worked as I wanted and recognized the EC set by the top dial on the Sony. I emailed Pro Support about it in the first week the A1 came out and they corresponded with me a few times via email and even phoned me at one point to get everything straight. But it took till the latest FW a month or so ago till they implemented the fix. So they did fix it yet it took a long time despite their excellent communication. I personally don't have a way to reach Nikon on a level sufficient enough to request this so I will be contacting Brad Hill via his FW update request list and try to contact a few other Nikon guys (Steve Perry, Thom Hogan, etc) to see if some of them can send this to Nikon to see if they want to change this or not.
