I'm hoping this is the next thing they announce. Hopefully I can get this over the 100-400...though I want both. saaketham wrote:

Dear me, Watson, dear me!! 😄
I think I managed quite well bringing all options back to just these two.
I never liked the Z7 output (had that for 6 months) but all that I am seeing from the Z9, including images with the 500PF, has led me to partly overcome my resentment with the sheer bulk of its body. The size and weight of PF lenses does the rest.
Then there is the Sony 600GM to put on my A7RIVa, which is fine for me as I don't put much value on shooting 200 images in a few seconds, and which has a very nice crop mode.
I'm getting there, it will be either of these two options, and it will have to do for the coming 10 years.

One thing I'd kind of like to have would be able to set one of the Fn buttons to be able to just toggle between whether I want subject detection to be either animals or people or just off. I'm not exactly sure why something like this is a menu dive.

Use Photo shooting bank and assign fn button to change different bank.
Ie. this is what I use.
photoshooting bank A

Interesting. I'm dumb regarding what photo banks do. So far I just put F4 as the my menu button and moved it there. this is me wrote:

I fail to see the difference in Z7 and Z9 files. I have both camera.
Sounds like the Sony is the way to go for you.

Not dumb. You just need to play with the settings. Try it out. It works wonderfully for me as I often shoot my kid and family events and then try to bird a little as well.
If you mess something up, you can always go back to factory reset.

The Sony 600GM is a fantastic lens for sure.
As for Z9 versus Z7II, the Z9 files appear to have a warmth (Sony like in a way) that the Z7(II) lacks. The Z7(II) files have an austere appearance that I don't like myself for birding/wildlife. I had the Z7 for half a year to use the 500PF on, but sold it eventually and returned to the D500.

I would say that if your bird photography doesn't include much BIF then the Sony combo sounds like it would satisfy you the most just because I think you will really like still having f/4. The 600GM on the A7RIV worked really well. Much better than my 200-600 did. I just don't enjoy BIF with the blackout of the MS or the slideshow of the ES (at 10FPS).
If you want the better performing camera then the Z9 would be better. You should know if you need f/4 or not seeing as you shoot one now. That would be your limiting factor with your proposed Nikon setup. Also haven't you always been a bit negative towards PF lens rendering?

I was amongst the adopters of the 500PF, and still remember there were f4 shooters that rejected the 500PF, some passionately. I was not in that camp.
My issue with the 500PF was that i.m.o. it does not do well with a 1.4TC, and that it does not separate from the background gracefully. Once I got the Sigma 500/4 I realized that this is not only down to the f5.6 max. aperture, but also (in part) down to the optical formula of the 500PF. Even at f5.6 the Sigma 500/4 still has much more graceful bokeh and separates better from the surroundings. That is why I already made plans to switch to Sony for the 600GM. But that was before the 800PF was announced as being developed.
I expect the 800mm f6.3 PF to do distinctly better at subject isolation. And being an 800mm lens, I won't need a TC, so I won't care about how it takes a TC. F6.3 still ensures good clarity. The benefits of the Nikon set-up, are that with the Z9 and the 500PF, I have a small and still relatively light 500mm combo, and with the Z9+800PF I will have a still portable combo with native AF and no need for a TC (I don't like TC's anymore honestly).
Since I cannot afford both, and switching is really expensive, I am thinking this through properly this time. If I go for the Sony 600GM, I will sell the D500, 500PF and Sigma 500/4.

Why not just the A1. The smaller body you like and no blackout, and can focus on a fly in flight. And it’s readily available. Win Win Win!
Okay. Now back to our regular program with Z9 images.
When choosing the Sony 600GM, in time of course the A1. For me though, the extra 7000,- are not realistic when I already have the A7RIVa. I think the 600GM is an entirely different beast on the A7RIV than the much lamented 200-600G on that body.

I don't know. At this point, there's little information on the 800pf other than it's a PF and it's f6.3. I thought I read because of the PF tech and configuration of the elements, the bokeh of PF lenses are SUBJECTIVELY not pleasing with busy background.
I think a lot of people will be quite shocked when they see the price and weight of the 800pf. The price and weight saving won't be as good compare to the 500f4 vs. 500pf because the 500pf is a full stop slower than the 500f4 counterpart whereas the 800pf is 1/3 stop vs. the 800f5.6. I wouldn't be surprised if it cost almost as much as the 600mm f4 at $13k. Why? the currrent 800f5.6FL is $16k. It's massive and it's heavy. The 800f6.3PF is only 1/3 stop slower and with PF, it will be lighter. The 600mm f4 with a 1.4TC will give you 840mmf5.6 but it's also ~13k for that combo and it's also massive and heavy. And not to mention, that large fresnel element will be very costly to make. I think anyone who thinks the 800PF will be as affordable as the 500pf will be very disappointed.
At this point, I think it's silly for a Sony shooter to veer off their path because of the Z9 and their future lens that we have very little information on. Besides, the Z9 is still being validated. I wouldn't fall into the hype of the latest gear.
I say all this with a bag full of Nikon Z(including Z9) and not a single Sony gear except their CFexpress card reader.

You're halfway there .. just add an a1, a couple of GM lenses and boom!
I think ChrisMak likes to feel tormented by indecision. His gear of choice also changes depending on the time of day.
Last I talked to him a few days ago, he was convinced a z6ii and Sigma 500 was what he was going with - final final decision!

Except for the fact that that CFexpress card reader won't read any of the cards that go into the A1...so not quite half way there just yet

Just found out that you probably need the newest battery in the Z9 in order to do a firmware update. Tried doing it with the D4 battery in it and it told me it won't do it because of "low battery."

Yup. I threw the D4 battery in there A) to see if it would work and b) I needed to put something in the camera to shoot with while the new battery was charging. This just prompted me to swap batteries, but hey I got three spares in a way so whatever. I'm just glad the old D4 battery is supported. It really was some cool brand loyalty for me. sjms wrote:
