Yeah if they keep that lettering mine will end up with a strip of gaffers tape over it.

Did you not sell your 500pf? I live in Victoria and wasn't quick enough on the draw when I thought you were selling it (unless I'm mistaken)!

I ended up keeping my 500PF, all three TCs, D500 and Z50/FTZ. I've ordered the Z9 to test it out. I'm looking forward to testing it back to back with my A1.

Extrapolating from the lens mount dimensions, the widest the lens gets is around 149mm x 380mm long by my clumsy calculations.

Nikon must have hired Pentax marketing folks (560mm)

Birder's Nirvana. Yes, I want one. But I might prefer a 600/4.5 VR S PF with a built-in 1.4x

I wonder what will have better IQ....Z800S or Z400S TC with the built in and an external 1.4TC engaged? You will have 800/5.6 v 800/6.3. I'd assume the Z800S will be better. It is hard to get 2 TCs and still best a native lens.

The Z400S TC still is calling to me more than the Z800S for the versatility and ability to shoot at f/4 and f/2.8 during the dreary winter. But TCs rub me the wrong way these days despite years of using them all the time. Hmmmmm.....

For 400s to become 800/5.6, you will need TCx2, I think. Not sure if stacking 2 TC1.4 gives you 1.8x or 1.96cx magnification
You either get roughly 720mm or 784mm.

From photographylife imatest, with built in TC, 180-400 sharpness went down 20% roughly.

https://photographylife.com/reviews/nikon-180-400mm-f4e-tc1-4-fl-ed-vr/2

I think there is a reasonable chance that 800PF will outperform 400/2.8s with TCx2 or 2x TC.
I already ordered 400/2.8s. Assuming sharpness is comparable at 800mm,
I might still consider 800PF if the weight is right. I assume 400/2.8s with built in TC will weight around 3kg (one rumor I heard is that 400/2.8S without collar assemble is around 2.5-2.7kg)
if 800PF weight more than 2.5 kg, it is probably less interesting but if it comes around 2.3 kg and the price is right, I think
it will be worthwhile. Now I can stick TCx2 on it for moonshot with little cropping needed on FF

But only rumor though. Some was accurate enough, some did not pan out. Although I have to say that the same source for 400/2.8s weight told me about ultralight/light 800mm lens about 4-5 months ago but did not know if it was going to be like Canon 800/f11 or 800/8PF. Now it turned out to be 800/f6.3 which is an even nicer surprise.

Will it still be "ultralight/light" though at f6.3?
Relatively speaking I guess it will be. Just compare the 500PF to a 500/4 lens and I at least had a really hard time taking it seriously at its diminutive size and weight, but its optical performance left no doubt that it is a true 500mm prime. Scale that up to an 800mm f6.3 lens and it should still be a small light lens.

This lens is finally a reason to stay with Nikon for me personally, and turn around on the road to a full Sony kit. I am delighted that Nikon pulled its release forward to even pass by the 600/4 and 200-600 lenses. BH photo says "coming soon", but I expect it to be released somewhere in 2022. Getting on the pre-order list as soon as it is announced would still mean a wait of 6-12 months, so in the hand in 1,5 years time?

b.t.w. we may have to thank Canon in part for this move. Nikon will have witnessed the 600/800mm DO lenses working AF wise on mirrorless RF bodies, and this release might just be strategic to take some wind out of Canon sails. But who cares if it is, Nikon at least puts out a "real" 800mm prime.

I'm excited for this 800PF but I'll wait to see the numbers(weight) of the 400mmf2.8S. This will give us an idea of what the 600mm f4S will be. The two lens usually track each other pretty well in terms of weight and price.

Yeah, after the Z9 release and the issues with the Sigma 500, I was ready to put my Nikon gear for sale, and drive this road to Sony. I guess Nikon did not want to let me go after all. I will get either a Z6II or a Z7II in advance, still contemplating. The Z7II is a bit more than I want to spend, but since my Sigma 500 cannot be used for BIF it would shine with the 1.4TC for slow moving birds/wildlife on a Z7II, until the 800PF arrives.

Please try the Sigma with a z6ii before you sell it. It worked really well for me while I had that combo.
I did not like it as much on the z7ii.

Hey Chris - I thought of you when I read the z800PF announcement. Glad you saw it. ;-)

I'll be getting in line for this one too!

Probably ultralight/light only relative to 800/5.6e FL I guess
When I first heard ultralight, I really though it had to be 800/f11 which I would not be interested in. But if we get into the realm of 800/f8, light probably is still reasonable but probably not ultralight anymore. F6.3, I don't know but if it comes in at 2.5kg or less, light is probably still a reasonable description.

I assume it will come out sometimes next year but whether first half or second half is anybody's guess.
I get to hear more about the camera but not so much about the lens. Apparently, despite moving all productions to Thailand supposedly, I heard that 400/2.8s will be assemble in Japan with lots of parts made in Thailand so I don't get to hear much about the lens and nobody over here has seen the real thing yet. I was told for example, 800/5.6e FL is produced in low quantities not because of the price only but some assembly require such expertise that Nikon only has like2 technicians who can do it. While Nikon moved a lot of engineers and technicians over to Thailand, I guess not all of them came over.
No idea if 800PF will be assemble in Japan or Thailand though.

I could very well had jumped ship to Sony earlier this year except for 2 things. I was told regarding Z9 and that it would be a high resolution fast body a few weeks before Sony launched A1. Then wiht all the Covid epidemic and I was not able to travel for most of the year and all plans were cancelled, there was no rush to get another camera so that gave me plenty of time to sit tight and see what Nikon would do. Glad I was waiting

Thanks for sharing your experiences. Why did you like it better on the Z6II than on the Z7II?

I did get good photos on the z7ii + Sigma 500, but it felt to me to AF better with my z6ii.

Hi Phil,

Yes the 800PF at f6.3 is a dream lens for me. So much so, that I would even accept a Z9 if no other options arise in the end, and the 800PF stays at or below 2,5kg. But I'll be happy to start out with a Z7II/Z6II first.

Hope to see you on the 800PF image thread over at you know where in 1,5 yrs time!

Yes it may report 784mm as the Canon 200-400 did (is that what the Nikon 180-400 reports also). And then I guess it depends if you believe 1.4TC is 1.4 or is actually the square root of 2...which is really should be but nothing is perfect these days
