Fun time ahead. Sony responded to Nikon 50/1.2s and 70-200/2.8s with excellent products.
I wonder what Sony has up its sleeve. I like it when companies push each other forward.
Just hope I won't have to sell my kidney and half a liver for all the upcoming goodies.

I have no idea what Sony is cooking up. Hopefully something. I have deep PF lens envy to deal with...

And I have 14/1.8, 135/1.8 envy right now and throw in 28-70/2 RF for good measure.

Probably a good decision.....but if you change your mind again, please let me know! I agree with you on the 500 + TC option vs the 800mm. More versatile depending on the situation. Not wanting to hijack this thread, but also curious how the D500 stands up to the A1. Obviously different tools but I find the D500 AF incredibly reliable with the 200-500 and 70-200.

I would test the 135mm f1.8 before buying if I were you. It's an excellent lens technically, but I find it's rendering very flat. Not even close to a Nikon 105mm f1.4 for example.

The cannot be said of the 50mm f1.2 but the 135mm f1.8 was one of the reason why I decided to sell my Sony bodies. What's the point of a great AF if there are no great lenses to make images with?

Maybe it's just a matter of personal taste.

Cheers,
Bernard

Thanks for your comment. Very interesting regarding 135/1.8.
I currently have Sigma Art 135/1.8 which I felt pretty much the same way as you feel regarding Sony 135/1.8 . I just remember looking at pictures from Sony 135/1.8 and thought that it looked very nice and rendering looked better than
The Sigma. However, I also feel that 105/1.4e overall rendering is nicer than Sigma Art. I still have soft spot
For 135/2 DC but now I only D6 and Df that can AF with it.
I am not seriously considering adopting E mount lens to Z mount even though I have techart e to Z mount adapter with AF.
It seems that sometimes when Nikon update firmware, then I have to wait for Techart to update its firmware as well.
A bit too much hassle than I like.

Of the handful of lenses I rented this year, the Sony 35mm f/1.4 GM was one of my favorites (I ended up buying one shortly after), while the Sony 135mm f/1.8 GM was one I couldn't wait to return. It could be a totally personal preference thing and not anything wrong with the lens.

I just bought a used Nikon F 105mm f/1.4 to try on my z7ii. Should be getting it on Thursday and plan to use it on a trip this weekend, along with Sony 35 GM and 200-600 G.

Second that on the Sony 35GM, which on the A7RIV is really unbelievably good. I had the Nikon Z24S and Z50S lenses on the Z7 for about a year, and these were very good lenses, but the Sony 35GM is another notch up and an instant classic. The fact that they managed to put its optics in a very compact 524gr package, is also quite an achievement.

How is the Sony 35/1.4GM compare to Zeiss 35/1.4 ZM or Milvus? Have you had a chance to compare with either lenses?
I really love the Milvus but it is quite big and heavy. The ZM is almost an equal, a little less contrast, but when use with Techart or Megadap adapter, it becomes pretty decent AF lens on Z7 ii and I love how compact it is.

I have not used a f1.4 lens before, due to their weight and size, and portability is paramount for me.
I have used almost all of the Zeiss classic line f2 lenses and the Loxia 25, 35 and 50. The Sony 35GM is the first non Zeiss lens that I have bought for a decade (since selling all my Olympus Zuiko SHG lenses) for allround shooting (non wildlife).
That says something I guess, I cannot find any flaws with the 35GM, but many things that put a smile around my face. I have to say though that I feel you really need the Sony A7RIV for this lens to sing, I first used it on my old Sony A7RII, but was not convinced, I did not really like the colors, too bold, and the 35GM's contrast seemed a bit too high for the A7RII, blowing highlights and blocking up shadows.
Somehow, the 35GM seems made for the A7RIV, because that body transformed it into my favorite lens. The resolution on that body is simply astounding.

Not sure if it was mentioned but it looks like it will have a standard twist on plastic hood instead of the screw on tele hoods. If this gets released prior to receiving my Z9 I may just cancel the pre-order and send the funds this way.

I hadn't paid attention to that area but you are correct.

Also of note is there appears to be drop-in filter at the rear and the control ring.

Both control ring and L-Fn button look to be in good positions for handholding.

The "late" chambeshi did this great analysis over on BCG forums. I think these measurements make a lot of sense when you compare previous 400E length to the new 400S.

I think you are wrong. All of the actual lenses shown, other than wide angle exceptions, have visible threads for plastic hood attachment or the ridge for traditional super telephoto. All of the blacked out lens images are just slick in that area. This suggest that these blacked out images are just mockups lacking fine detail.

Look at the image in the original post and you'll see the obvious hood "twist-on" bits at the front of the lens

I will never sell my 500mm pf so long as I live. BUT I could see myself picking this lens up. What I'm waiting for is a Z version of the D500. Basically take the sensor from the Z50/Zfc and put the AF capabilities watered down from the Z9 and I'm sold. Until then I'm sticking to my DSLRs.

I'm waiting for the ability to shoot a Z7iii next to a Z D500. Pair that with my 500 pf, the Z200-600 and the 800 pf and I'm good for life.

Happy shooting!

Doesn't Canon have an 800 DO and a 600 DO?

The thing about mirrorless, however, is that you can't take the sensor form the Z50 and have anything remotely close to the AF capabilities of the Z9. With DSLRs the sensor and the AF units were separate. With mirrorless the AF depends to a large extent on the sensor scan speed. The sensor scan speed is pretty slow on the Z50 sensor and nowhere near the sensor scan speed of the Z9, so you can't get Z9 like AF with the Z50 sensor. You may be waiting for quite some time for the mirrorless D500, but then again maybe Nikon will build the right sensor for a mirrorless D500, but expect a pretty hefty price, however, because they certainly won't be using he Z50 sensor and one with a fast sensor scan speed at least right now won't come cheap.

The Canon lenses both have a max aperture of f/11, this is f/6.3 so a huge 1 and 2/3rds stops of light faster aperture.
