Will it still be "ultralight/light" though at f6.3?
Relatively speaking I guess it will be. Just compare the 500PF to a 500/4 lens and I at least had a really hard time taking it seriously at its diminutive size and weight, but its optical performance left no doubt that it is a true 500mm prime. Scale that up to an 800mm f6.3 lens and it should still be a small light lens.
This lens is finally a reason to stay with Nikon for me personally, and turn around on the road to a full Sony kit. I am delighted that Nikon pulled its release forward to even pass by the 600/4 and 200-600 lenses. BH photo says "coming soon", but I expect it to be released somewhere in 2022. Getting on the pre-order list as soon as it is announced would still mean a wait of 6-12 months, so in the hand in 1,5 years time?
b.t.w. we may have to thank Canon in part for this move. Nikon will have witnessed the 600/800mm DO lenses working AF wise on mirrorless RF bodies, and this release might just be strategic to take some wind out of Canon sails. But who cares if it is, Nikon at least puts out a "real" 800mm prime.
Probably ultralight/light only relative to 800/5.6e FL I guess
When I first heard ultralight, I really though it had to be 800/f11 which I would not be interested in. But if we get into the realm of 800/f8, light probably is still reasonable but probably not ultralight anymore. F6.3, I don't know but if it comes in at 2.5kg or less, light is probably still a reasonable description.
I assume it will come out sometimes next year but whether first half or second half is anybody's guess.
I get to hear more about the camera but not so much about the lens. Apparently, despite moving all productions to Thailand supposedly, I heard that 400/2.8s will be assemble in Japan with lots of parts made in Thailand so I don't get to hear much about the lens and nobody over here has seen the real thing yet. I was told for example, 800/5.6e FL is produced in low quantities not because of the price only but some assembly require such expertise that Nikon only has like2 technicians who can do it. While Nikon moved a lot of engineers and technicians over to Thailand, I guess not all of them came over.
No idea if 800PF will be assemble in Japan or Thailand though.
I could very well had jumped ship to Sony earlier this year except for 2 things. I was told regarding Z9 and that it would be a high resolution fast body a few weeks before Sony launched A1. Then wiht all the Covid epidermic and I was not able to travel for most of the year and all plans were cancelled, there was no rush to get another camera so that gave me plenty of time to sit tight and see what Nikon would do. Glad I was waiting
