p.5 #1 · Should I Replace My 1Dxll and 5Ds w/The R5?

I am reading EBH reply as possibly meaning non eye AF modes like just regular single point or spot AF. I could be wrong though.

Eye AF is not fool proof. It can get confused for sure, or at least not focus on what you think it should. That is why a lot of folks use the dual back button focus so as to have that mode plus a spot AF type mode available instantly.

I only have an R6, but have not noticed the focus hunting in any mode.

p.5 #4 · Should I Replace My 1Dxll and 5Ds w/The R5?

I was discussing pros and cons of mirrorless vs dslr, with someone else. Not sure if it was on this thread or a different one. TS claims he wasn't mad, but apparently not real happy, judging by his "toxic" posts & my response, which ended the reasonable discussion. Quite a swing to see that he is the victim now. Also quite a swing between 1) chastising me for my antiquated equipment, not buying into mirrorless, and 2) using the same basic arguments to say he doesn't need the R3. And it's a valid point, not to buy something you don't think is going to help you much. But I can make the same points.

GDan's post seems nice on the surface, perhaps, but it's not looking like I am going to be able to buy a DSLR at some point in the future. And that is caused by mirrorless.

If some find that "off putting" to point that out, and that I'm not so happy about it, so be it, I guess. People complain about a lot of things on FM.

First, sounds like you could go back up and like my post. Let's see how many people we can get to refute this odd notion that we think DSLR users are stupid or must switch.

I hear what you are saying about the "woe is me" stuff. Mike can have some useful stuff to say from time to time, but this really is unnecessary and off-putting.

Useful stuff from time to time? Gee thanks Dan. Talk about condescending.

Can we all just get along? It’s just gear, no one should take anything personally. Smile and lighten up everyone. Just enjoy your toys. Have a great day and keep on clicking!

For the OP’s purposes, I have a 5DsR and a full Fuji X system. Latter is lighter and cheaper. 5DsR is kept to satiate my desire for 50mpx. If I go into the R system, I might consider the R6. Can’t afford the RF lenses so it will be EF lenses with adapter.

Same here, I don't see moving to RF lenses any time soon. Adapters are cheap, and I use all EF lenses. My R6 came with an RF lens, and I sold it, I didn't really find it all that interesting.

More input from those that actually own the cameras in question that have considered moving to mirrorless might be good too (since the models and their abilities do matter when considering a move over). I have not had the 5DS, but have the 5D4 (one step below in resolution but shares just about everything else), and I considered the R5, but alas, my laptop isn't up to processing the raws from that through DPP, and the price was a bit steep. I found the R6 on sale and decided on it instead for now.

I am seriously considering selling my 5D4, the last of my DSLRs, and then moving to the R5 just for the resolution bump though. I just have to get a bit less lazy and get things together and packaged. Not sure how to get the shutter count on it though, I know I will be asked.

Do you have to take EVERY comment that anyone makes in the most negative possible way? I'm done with this drama Mike and I'm not engaging with you any more. However, I urge you to step back and take a look at how your attitude interferes with your ability to get anything positive out of FM.

Bye.

That's where I'm coming from, too — I use the 5DsR that I got about the time that it was introduced for my tripod-based photography and a few other things. I have used the Fujifilm mirrorless APS-C system for close to a decade for my street, travel, and event photography.

For those who do a variety of types of photography, it can be a good thing to get more than one system, where each is optimized for a different sort of work.

I've learned over the years (OK, decades) that photography technology continues to advance in useful and good ways but that the immediate increment of improvement in new products is virtually always overstated. With few exceptions (but there are exceptions) this has reduced my sense that I must immediately jump to the newest thing. I do use new gear, but I tend to move from thing to thing a bit more slowly.

I'll keep using my 5DsR for now. While there are valid arguments that the R5 offers advantages over it, these advantages don't seem that gigantic, fully taking advantage of them would entail switching out EF lenses for newer RF lenses, and there's a very good chance that Canon is going to introduce something that is an even better update to my 5DsR. I'll be a bit jealous of the folks using the new R gear for a while... but not of their photographic results.

I'm the same with the Fujifilm system. Over the years I've acquired a very good and functional setup, with a range of lenses that meet my needs and more. But I managed to resist the allure of certain camera updates (still use my XPro2 with great results) and new lenses (again, they are often better than the old, but not in ways that will change my photography).

Another reason I'm going slow on the R updates is that the prospect of updating a slew of lenses suggests that I look even more broadly at system options from more manufacturers than Canon. With Canon DSLR updates, there was no reason to consider updating EF lenses, but a move to the R system would (despite the existence of the EF adapters) bring the purchase of RF lenses into the mix. And if replacing many very expensive lenses is on the table... so is the consideration of other brands. There's a lot to think about!

Dan

I cannot see the drama any longer, but am sad to see that it continues to detract from the thread.

I would love to see this thread expand a bit to those with the 1DX3 which has much of the mirrorless tech in it already but requires you to use the rear screen for all shooting. I wonder how many have moved to the R5 from the 1DX3, or at least augmented their kit with one?

A couple of points: GDan, you weren't engaging with me, anyway. For quite some time. So it's not a great loss. TS, you are the one that didn't like me having a rational DSLR vs mirrorless discussion, that you weren't even involved in, until you interjected, to begin with. Here's a tip: if you are going to complain about the drama, maybe you shouldn't start it.

I'm not familiar with how the 1DX3 expanded this technology. I take it that it uses the same sort of AF processes used in mirrorless cameras and makes that available on the live view rear display?

I wonder if it is doing something that is philosophically analogous to what at least some of the Fujifilm cameras have done. For example, on my XPro2 I can view the OVF but the camera is still using the video input to do its AF.

(Pardon my ignorance about the 1DX3. I have not used it, nor have I really looked into it.)

Much of the underpinnings of today’s mirrorless was incorporated into the live view mode of the 1dxiii, no deep learning or anything though.

Live view on that model is much like using a good mirrorless. It has been called a hybrid DSLR/mirrorless body by many.
