As a fellow backpacking photographer, how are you dealing with the increased draw on battery power? Are you carrying the same number of batteries with the R5 that you did with the 5DsR? Are you using a solar charging system and continuing to carry the same number of batteries?

I agree that camera/lens/tripod bulk (plus the need to carry other accessories) is a pretty important consideration when backpacking.

Can't you turn off a lot of the auto screen playback to get better battery life? I did that on the R and don't really have any battery issues.

On the backpacking: I'm a hiker, too. 5DSR or R--they're both too heavy, in my book.

Yes, there is a lot you can do to improve battery life. Airplane mode, turning off replay, turning off the screen switching, using the lowest amount of time before the camera sleeps. It still sucks the battery down a lot faster than a DSLR, but it does help a bunch.

I think they (smartly!) adopted that strategy based on Sony's success with it when they introduced their full frame mirrorless bodies with virtually no lenses... and most folks were relying on adapted Canon lenses.

Let me (again) preface what follows by acknowledging that I believe the new mirrorless cameras to be better than their DSLR predecessors. The point I'm trying to make is that this better-ness is measured against performance of some existing DSLRs that is truly excellent — we're mostly looking at comparing really good with a bit more really good rather than comparing OK with outstanding.

With that in mind, one

On a 3 day trip,I am used to carrying 2-3 spare batteries with 5dsr and using 2 (I am a live view/focuser). Same with R5. Landscape is not overly battery intensive. So battery is good.

I personally don't ever really change my AF point around either. I just put the point on the model, it locks on the eyes, and I shoot away. Nothing too terribly exciting would change should I get the R3. Also most of my portraiture involve more than one person (more family portraits), so I don't fit the generalities you laid out.

Sports, which the R3 is really being targeted it seems, also doesn't fit the scenario you lay out. My camera

That actually sounds interesting and might get me interested in mirrorless if it made it to the more consumer priced models.

If you are interested in lightweight gear, definitely take a look at the "kit trinity" + rebel. 16 to 400mm ff equivalent under 3 lbs.

I set the screen to only display a short time after the exposure, keeping it on manually if I need it for longer. When the camera is on the tripod I usually want to see the rear display though.

A personal question many encounter about backpacking photography: is covering ground the most important thing or is photography the most important? Many years ago my backpacking photography was mostly something I would do while covering ground, but for the past 20 years or so the main reason I go into the backcountry (or so I tell myself) is to make photographs.

On the rare occasions when I'm still focused on hiking distance, for example when traveling with non-photographers, I cut down my gear considerably, going so far as to use a APS-C camera, one zoom lens, and a travel tripod. But most of the time it is all about the photography and the load necessarily gets heavier:

- full-frame camera body
- one to four lenses from the following (in order of likely use) 24-70mm, 70-200mm, 16-35mm, 100-400mm. (The latter only goes along on pack train supported trips.)
- solid tripod
- various odds and ends — batteries, filters, solar panel, etc.

These days I'm most likely to go to some backcountry location and set up a basecamp and work the surrounding area for a few days or a week.

I am not sure what you reading into my post, I am not arguing about anything on the R3 other than it’s low resolution, I have been very consistent on that, and then also my lack of need for Eye Control AF, because it is a solution for which I have no problem.

And I still stand by Eye AF as being a wonderful tool, but I don’t need version two of the deep learning library that the R3 will have. Don’t get me wrong, the latest mirrorless offerings is superior to any DSLR in total product offering/capability, for those that need or want the best Canon has to offer. Again I am not sure what stand you think I am taking, perhaps some clarification is needed?

Also you have never made me mad, not once, quizzical yes, incredulous a couple of time, but never mad. This is gear we are talking about, not one’s kids or significant other. Some get upset at tech change or progress, I embrace it, and never get mad over it. I figure after two years plus of canon mirrorless progress, some would no longer consider this some sort of marketing ploy or fad, it’s the future. We simply have no choice other than to use old obsolete DSLR gear in future years or buy new mirrorless gear, this is a fact.

The only thing I get mad at is myself for keeping the EOS R when I knew it was a v. 1.0 of this tech and I didn't like the interface, particularly the joystick thing. Now I'll sell it for a big loss, but oh, well.

Yes, I know what you mean. I picked up the R on a sale, tried it for 3 months or so, and couldn't get over the pseudo-decent eye af, the controls, etc. It was a good first round though and a pretty good replacement for some for the 5D4, but I ended up selling it (but actually made a profit on it, go figure).

But there is a lot of group dynamics going on. We can debate if fad is the correct term, but it's the new cool thing, the latest tech. One famous actress, I think Meryl Streep, pointed out that life is more like high school than college. Join the cool crowd or else. I've definitely gotten negativity for staying dslr, which might be the number one reason I'm not so positive on this.

I don't really care about eye-af that much in part because I'm not sure if it is going to do me much good. I doubt it helps landscapes, for one thing. You don't want the latest eye controlled af points in the R3 because your (arguably) older tech is already working. I think the eye controlled that you aren't interested in sounds pretty interesting in part because eye af probably isn't going to work for my subjects.

Sure I'd rather have hundreds or thousands of af points. But the 90D didn't look deficient in this regard. And even has eye-af in LV!!! But people talk about the 90D like it's old and deficient at times. It's all pretty weird. 1Dx3 in LV is apparently right there vs A9II. LV on DSLR works a lot better than the OVF button on mirrorless

I can tell you that Eye AF is great. Time will tell how great Eye Control AF is really going to be, but I don't have any issues selecting which set of eyes to follow now, I don't necessarily need the ability to have my eyes roam around the scene to set where the camera focuses. I put my starting AF point on the face I want to track, start AF, and let the camera do the rest, for people, animals, whatever.

As to mirrorless in general, I would have hoped your views have changed from two years ago, do you still stand by this comment below? After two years of even better mirrorless tech, and new products across the landscape, I hope your views have been a bit tempered now with real stories of success, how shooting is better and easier, etc?

AmbientMike wrote two years ago:
And I wonder how much of the mirrorless craze is marketing? Paid reviews? How much is actual advantages?

It seems to be driven by Sony. Who couldn't pass the 5DsR for resolution for 4 years. Other than maybe the A9 series, nobody seems to think their af is faster. And still hasn't come out with a pro build body I don't think.

But, that's why I tend hate mirrorless anymore. It is basically coming in and telling me the type of camera I have to use , if I want a new camera.

Also I had stated a long time ago, I am envious that the SL2 and other Canon DSLRs work well for what you shoot. They don't for me. That means I spend quite a bit of money on this, but I am ok with that, as long as there are improvements in features, performance, ISO, IBIS, etc in every purchase. Heck, I just spent $500 for a DJI Mini 2 go-anywhere refurb package this week, so the money keeps walking out the door on things related to imagery. I want a new car to replace the boring Rav4 with 90K miles, but other things (like this hobby/part time career) keeps sucking money out of the "down payment" fund.

My favorite things with mirrorless are still the following where the Canon DSLR has no equivalence:
- Absolute silent shutter
- 20fps burst
- IBIS
- Focus peaking in the VF for manual focus/macros/manual focus lenses
- Ability to AF with the 100-400 with 1.4x or 2x
- Eye AF (short of the 1DX3 in live view)
- EVF with histogram, reviewing images, menus, simulated exposure and ability to see in the dark

These are my top 8 items that makes mirrorless win the race for what I shoot. I don't get any of these with the 5D4, and only a couple items would even exist on the 1DX3.

You started your post saying how you don't need the latest tech in the R3.

Then tried to make me look bad for not buying into the latest tech in the rest of the post.

I mean, what a load. I don't necessarily care too much if people like mirrorless , or at least, you should use the cameras you like. I'm not going to tell you that you must use dslr, because I like it. That would be stupid wouldn't it? But wait, that's what is being done to me.

Wow, there is no talking to you at all is there, on this topic? I am not trying to make you look bad, I am truly inquisitive on if you have changed your mind on anything regarding this.

Also, what I stated I don't think I care for above is a FEATURE on a CAMERA that isn't yet available, and has NOTHING to do with mirrorless. Canon could have put this feature into a DSLR if they wanted. For pete's sake, this existed in an earlier incarnation in a FILM camera.

I would try to apologize (YET AGAIN, just like in our PMs), but I am not going to any longer. I am not out to get you nor attack you, but you seem to be doing that with me every chance you get. I am no longer going to be able to see your posts or PMs at this point, I just don't have patience any longer for your toxicity on this subject, nor am going to walk on eggshells with you on this.

Mike:

- You are not stupid if you prefer to keep using a DSLR.

I'm continuing to use my Canon DSLR for now, too... alongside my non-Canon mirrorless system.

To others in this thread, if you agree that Mike does not have to use a mirrorless camera, indicated by "liking" this post.

For backpacking, do you use a monopod at all, or just bring the tripod? I have a really lightweight carbon fiber monopod but it rarely sees the light of day. I almost wonder if I need to start taking it everywhere, because it could be a walking stick, but also helps with weight issues with long lenses and just standing around. As I get older, a camera bag or camera/lens combo hanging off my shoulder is starting to introduce neck and shoulder pain too. Ughh...

Going mirrorless really didn't help at all with weight and bulk either, like I was led to believe from threads years ago, lol.

Funny thing is I also continue to use my DSLR and have stated it many times, but am a bit tired of the "woe is me, and how dare you" replies all the time. I use a tripod, exclusively. (On very rare occasions I will use the tripod like a monopod, without spreading its legs.) For me (and YMMV) using the tripod is really important — not just for the camera stability reasons, but also because it lets me lock in a composition and hold it perfectly while I adjust exposure, focus, and other things. I can also get in front of the camera to shade the lens from light in backlit shots, and more.

In my view, the biggest ways to save weight for backpacking photography are:

- Use lenses with larger maximum apertures since they tend to be quite a bit smaller. (For example, compare the f/2.8 and f/4 versions of the 70-200mm zooms.)
- Get by with fewer lenses. While I have a core set of four lenses that I use for most of my landscape photography, I often use only a couple of them when backpacking.
- Use a lighter tripod. My tripod for vehicle-based photography is quite heavy and it has the largest RRS head. For backpacking I use a lighter (though not flimsy) tripod and a different, lighter head.
- Consider a smaller format. For many people an APS-C camera will do a great job, and the camera and lenses can be smaller. (Those of us who print big can't do that, but for most people it is just fine.)
- Depending on what you do with your photographs, consider an even smaller all-in-one camera.

I hear what you are saying about the "woe is me" stuff. Mike can have some useful stuff to say from time to time, but this really is unnecessary and off-putting.

Definitely makes sense on the tripod use then. I can see all of that. I also have a carbon fiber Weifeng tripod (not sure they are made any longer, but it is quite nice), so I have that available too. I rarely use that too, but again, as I get older I want things to be easier, so those may start to be utilized.

I do have the M50 for travel, and it is a great mirrorless option, and takes even a wider range of lenses than the R6 and 5D4. I would likely use that more for hiking too, as I have a 12mm f2, 50 1.2, and then a couple EFS lenses all of which fit into a bag that is about 1/3 the size of my other gear bag. Battery life is terrible though.

I didn't originally see your post because when you use the Hide function, the way Fred has it wired up is that it also hides anybody else's replies where they have quoted that person. So I have to unHide, see your post, then reHide. It kinda makes that function a pain to use IMO.

I did like your reply though, because yes, the absolute only time Mike would have to move to mirrorless would be if in the future, he was not able to find any DSLR on the market (new or used) and his gear was broken. Then the only choice would be to get a mirrorless. Other than that, live by the mantra "buy what you like, and use what you buy"...

No, just kidding!
Some background...., I saw no need to replace my current cameras with a ML any time soon.
But when shooting sports, mostly bicycle racing with the 1D probably 20% of the time the camera locks focus on the jersey and the face/eyes are soft. If its a really critical shot like a finish line I pre-focus and turn off the AF to be sure I get the shot and use high fps.

The AF of the R5 leaves a lot to be desired for non auto-subject-detection usage. If your subjects are primates, birds or others with whites of the eyes or other "bullseye" targets, then it is does well at tracking. Auto AF on many other mamals without whites of the eyes fails, e.g., may AF on the behind vs. head. Initial AF acquisition for (long tele) defocused images is often poor or non-existent, so you have to prefocus sometimes.

I would get an R3 for sports and an R5 for less demanding situations.

That's odd to hear you say that EB. My R5 hit's whatever I aim at immediately tracking setup or not. It's one of the things that continues to amazing me. I am, shoot and it nails it without fail even in poor light.
