So should I leave this permanently off on my a9? Or only when shooting at fast shutter speeds? That''s a real hit to the quality of the bokeh.

The rule of thumb is that is starts to become visible around 1/1000s and faster.
The issue is Sony has still not come up with an "auto" setting that would take care of switching EFCS on/off. I often forgot about it, so it might be better to leave it permanently off...

I've seen used A73's go for under $1300. That's not too bad.

I'm not sure where you shop, but around here the going price is about $2300 or so for a used A7 III body.

Yeah this is a setting I'd forget about too so I'm going to leave it switched off. Great and informative video, thanks for sharing it.

I’m talking the American buck. Just looked at a A73 sold on the B&S board for $1150.

Yes, I had EFCS on and have since gone to full mechanical or full eshutter, depending.

I've had good luck buying from FM and having it shipped to Canada as well. Canada Post will collect tax, but only one as long as it's clearly marked as used. In Vancouver, Marketplace and Craigslist usually have A7III's in the 1900-2100 range, not a very good deal at all, if you ask me.

I can't see any way in which the A7IV will best the A9 for AF other than having Bird Eye AF.

IMO the A1 isn't even all that much better than A9 when just used in Wide and Zone non-tracking versions (which is all I use anyways for fast action). Yes the A1 does seem to get a bit higher hit rate but the A9 already has such a high hit rate that the

That's the trouble with keeping such a poor scan speed, you cannot do 60 AF calucaltions a second from a sensor that at best does 1/20s scan speed.

So what I suspect is in animal eye tracking mode it will be right up their with the R6 which means it will be very good, but in non-tracking modes the A9 will be much better. So if in tracking mode gets you a lot keepers does it matter if in non-tracking modes it not as good? Same problem with the R5 and R6, they can't hold a candle to the A9 without their eye tracking enabled, but are competitive with the A1 when it is.

Last one to hit Henry’s was $1999 CAD, that was about a week and a half ago.

Comparing AF only, do A9/A9II still have an edge or has A7IV caught up with AF performance?

No one has shot the a7IV yet to know how good it really is. However, it is very unlikely to match the a9/a9II because it is not a stacked sensor. It will never be as quick at AF. It theoretically possible that it match in accuracy. We will have to wait to know for sure.

Or maybe it is the other way around? The tech has advanced so far that an "entry-level enthusiast camera" fulfills all the requirements of wedding, event, and portrait professional photographers

Then I think that we can mostly agree that in the current environment of advanced mirrorless cameras the adjective "pro" is without meaningful distinction.

Assuming this conversation is about the used market, in Ontario, Quebec and Alberta, used A7 iii can frequently be found for as low as $1900 or even lower. Right now, I see some for as low as $1850 on Kijiji (in Ontario and Alberta). Interestingly, somebody is selling an A7r iii for only $1850 (in Quebec)! BC must be different. Used market seems much smaller there in comparison. So I wouldn't be surprised if the lower cap is higher over there.

Of course, it can never be as good as it is in the US.

Does anyone know if the A7IV work with the Sony LA-EA5?

It does—full support according to Sony. I posed that question earlier this thread and then found the answer and posted that too.

Depends. Its AF is sensitive to -4ev, A9 can't match that. A better and faster processor can help in object detection and tracking, too. Only because it doesn't have a stacked sensor doesn't mean AF needs to be worse, an A9 isn't that new anymore. I would like to be positively surprised.

It depends on use case. In our experience hit rate with A1, especially in bad light, is very clearly better than that of the A9/A9ii. We don't shoot BIF, but on the dance floor the difference is clear. Additionally, it does that with 50MP vs. 24MP and at large apertures, f1.2 -f2 at closer distances, where minimal changes in positioning already give oof images. The better processing power and AF sensitivity likely helps.

All this is true, but getting data off the sensor is a clear bottle neck that can affect the AF. The relatively slow sensor scan speed of the A7 IV will impact AF, to what extent and in what situations we will have to wait until people get the camera in their hands to figure that out.

I read the A7IV will go down to -4 EV for focusing which is very good in low light. These are the types of things that simply need to be tested. Right now we are all guessing somewhat at its functionality. I think it has a nice start and 2500 is totally fair price for it. My only wish it was Dec 1st for release.
