I bought a used A1, and really enjoyed shooting with it + 200-600, although the camera does all the work
and I feel useless now - getting sharp images is now a given (which may or may not be a good thing).
However, the warranty on it is expiring soon, and since I got a $1000 B&H gift card from my fiancee, as my birthday gift,
I am considering buying a new A1 with extended All State warranty from B&H, or maybe a A7IV.

I do not need more than 10 fps, as the deluge of similar photos I end up with, after shooting 20 fps
(I am not using a CFExpress A card on my A1), is really slowing down my post-processing.
I can of course turn the fps down on the A1, but for $4000 less, anyone think going from an A1 to an A7IV will leave one wanting?

Yes. Big difference in camera performance between one with a stacked sensor vs one without.

Just read up on people's experiences between A9 and A7III. The same differences will apply between the A1 and A7IV. Actually the gap is bigger.

Whether any of the benefits of the A1 matter to you only you can decide.

hmmm Ok. I went from a9 to a1 because I needed more megapixels than 24 plus bird's eye AF. So, when I saw the a7IV has the same AF as a1, and 9 more MP than the a9, I got curious. Guess I will end up buying a new a1 then (B&H does not charge tax in my state yet, luckily).

As far as I understand it the A74 does 20 or 30 AF calculations per second, the A9 60, and A1 120.
I am uncertain how AF per second calculations affects burst sequence AF success rate but I do assume the higher the number the better.
I am eagerly awaiting seeing A74 burst sequences AF keeper results. I am curious to know if the A74’s “bird eye tracking” AF does well enough in spite of the A74’s low AF calculation per second specification.
To be honest...I have little hope for the A74 as I’ve seen little (nothing) on the usual WWW sources showing the A74 whereas the other newly released camera of late has numerous information answering all questions of mine and more.
Edit- I should clarify- I am speaking only with BIF purposes in mind. I do for certain believe the A74 will be an excellent camera for most all other purposes.

My interest is more how well the A74 picks out and tracks human eyes in dim conditions. I shoot travel and challenging light is very common. I'm looking more at accuracy in dim light rather than all out speed of tracking.

I went from a9 to a1 and there is a difference, at least in my attempts at BIF; but I often remind myself of my first 'real' camera, the Nikon F2 and the realization that with any of todays' decent cameras BIF is easily doable (R5/6, Z7,etc.) I'm actually happily surprised by the BIF capability of the A7C which I've packed for backup if the a1 were to get puny. To me (just one opinion I know), the A7C's AF-tracking is better than the A7Riv I sold my best friend.
All that to say I don't think BIF will be an issue for anyone who can stomach 10fps (a software limitation I'm sure Sony imposed on this body). And continuing historical comparisons, for the longest time (until the a9) my highest BIF keeper body was the Canon 7Dii.

E-mail today from B/H, my a7iv has shipped.

Are any of you early adopters shooting with an MC-11 or Metabones adapter and Canon glass? If so, I'd love to read about your impressions.

This year, my main cameras has been the Sony A1 and the Canon R5, I've shot both extensively but I mainly do documentary, travel, portraits and sports like soccer - not much BIF or carefully planned landscape like many people here on FM.

I recently sold off all my Canon gear because a) I want to consolidate to the Sony platform due to the open lens mount and choices, and) having two systems is a fun and educational but kind of stupid for a weekend shooter like myself. But let's face it, there are worth vices to have ;-)

Now to the A7IV - it should come to no shock to anyone that it is not an A1. It doesn't have the performance, the speed, the handling, or the build quality of a A1. I don't think why anyone think it would or should. Nor is it meant to replace a A7SIII or A9II - again, different tools for different use-cases. Personally, I think the A7IV falls in the just-about-right Goldilock category -- it is not "the best" in pretty much any category but it performs and handles admirably in almost any category, making a great choice for enthusiasts and pros alike.

I can't really talk to how much of an improvement it is over an A7III because I went from the A7RIII to Canon R5 and the A1. Clearly, it feels more plastic and "cheap" compared to either an A1 or R5. The viewfinder is much better on those other cameras as well. I haven't shot any sports yet, nor enough low light, etc to do a "review", just some initial observations. Do I think the A1 is twice the camera? Sure, for some with gaps/needs that the A1 fill, it is clearly worth it, but overall, I think in my use-cases I am well enough served by the A7IV. Same thing goes for the R5 actually, I sold it off and saved $1,000. I sold the RF 70-200/2.8 that I was not getting along with for the FE 70-200/2.8 GMII, which seems to be the medicine the doctor ordered, but again, I need more time with it.

Net/net: I think the A7IV is a home run. For the price and the category it competes within, it is the top choice IMO, but the real benefit is the open Sony lens platform and the quality of the native GM and G glass that Sony produces at this point. I prefer the Sony 50/1.2GM over the RF 50/1.2, I prefer the FE 70-200/2.8GMII over the Canon RF 70-200/2.8 - both of those are important lenses for me. Add 35/1.4GM, 24/1.4GM, 20/1.8 or 135/1.8 (I hear, I haven't shot it myself) and you have a very capable and compelling system.

Merry Xmas PhotoFam!

Just for you, yesterday afternoon I popped an MC-11 onto the 7iv with a Canon 400/5.6 (one of the few EOS lenses I have left) and it worked fine (and you know the 400/5.6 is an ancient ancient beast).
In Zone there is maybe a 1/10 second delay (my best guess) before the green dancing squares but depending on the situation I've seen the same with my A1+600/4.
I'd bet a more modern Canon lens (300ISii,500ISii,etc) would be even better.

I'd not hesitate to BIF larger bierds (herons, eagles, hawks, etc) with the combo.

I also popped on an FE 2.0TC+100400GM and the combo works fine as well (though you know it's F11).
Won't do me any good here in the dark dank surrounds but for the Floridians it's workable.

Speaking of the 100400. The dog and I did a long walk yesterday and its a fine walkabout combo for my weight bearing capacity.

Nicely stated opinion.

I'm old school and like to have two cameras with me on trips.
I've been packing the A7c along with the A1. I'm elated to report that the a7iv has enough dials
and buttons that I've programmed it within 98% of my A1...picking up one is like picking up the other
for muscle memory-button finger placement. Very nice the menus of the a7iv and a1 are super close (though
not exactly the same).

Since the A7IV is new, there are no setup videos for the camera yet. And I'm struggling with the new menu system. My fix? Mark Smith and Mark Galers A1 setup video. I've used their A7RIV/A9 setup videos for my A7III. Should get that 98% you said with mine as well.

This is exactly why I sold my a7c and ordered an a7iv ( plus resolution and Flippy screen for Astro). I decided late though and ordered on December 10 so it's going to be a while for mine.

Buffalo, I played more with mine today. I think you're really going to like this body. Makes me wish the A1 had a flippy screen.
To me, not plastic feeling at all. Another home run by Sony....I don't think we'll part with the a7c anytime soon though. The better-half has always liked rangefinder style bodies and only recently gave up her a6400. For wide field astro the A7C (to me) is just a pleasure. If it had only a few more buttons and dials, but more importantly the ability to use a normal typical external intervalometer to go beyond 30 second exposures.
But as we've been reading the A7C might soon be a collectors item
Oh, thanks again for the items you sent my way. I referred you to a friend in Connecticut for her 600/4

Can you activate crop mode while the camera is buffering in photo mode like the a1? I'm thinking of selling my a7riv for an a7iv, and that's one that things that annoys me the most. Do you guys think I'll miss the 61mp? Maybe a little. I love it but seems to me it won't make a difference when not pixel peeping or doing extreme cropping. I also want the 10bit video on the a7iv.

I'll try today. We're going out for the all exciting Mallard. And will report back if no one else has.

Will you miss the 61mp. Depends on how much you rely on cropping I'd guess (if solely wildlifing with the A7Riv). I won't give a lecture on wildlife photography as I'm no authority but you and I know many a million awesome shot was done with far lesser mega'pixeled cameras

So, I was trying this for you around the house this morning and I THINK the answer is “no.” But it’s hard to tell because the buffer is clearing too fast. I’ll have to give it another shot later with changing out the CFExpress card for a slow SD and see if I can fi up the buffer.

Yes to the above. Adding to that observation, I tried with fast UHS-ii cards, shooting RAW lossless compressed. I just held down the shutter button and left it rip for a while. I stopped and reached to hit my button programmed to switch back-n-forth with APS-C and I wasn't fast enough! The buffer had already cleared....this after 85 shots....but I don't think I ever filled the buffer nor was close to it in this raw format.

Go here and scroll down to the UHS-ii card stats on the A7iv-
https://www.alphashooters.com/cameras/sony-a7iv/memory-cards/

I've not gone down the CFast Express road with my A1, just don't have buffer lockup issues (only ever filled the buffer two times) and again this is me using good Prograde or Angelbird UHS-ii's.

I did order some Kingston just to use in the A7iv, because they have red labels and I can tell them apart more quickly.

I also played with HEIF files today.....trying to remember what I'm supposed to do with them

Had to download Imaging Edge desktop then download the actual view and editor....that's a pain on HughesNet!
