Unless it has a stacked sensor, I’m not interested. I’ll wait for the A9III.

The A7IV with a stacked sensor would be another game-changer!

Unfortunately, it does not look like a stacked sensor from the northrup video. There was EVF blackout between shots.

An opportunity missed, I guess.

I honestly thought that Sony gonna update IBIS and it's gonna be better than in A7 III but it seems it's the same and with more Mpix it obviously gives worse results. I like to use 3rd party lenses which most of the time dont have OSS.

I thought it will have better EVF than my A7R III but im not sure it will, althou he didn't say anything about this in the video, so i'm going by rumors for now.

For some reason AF in video looked bad in Northrup video.

I didn't even care for more fps, i thought thou it's

I think your opinion will change once you get some hands on

the new menu is way better, no more menu lockouts

AF in video has always been good, even with the A7iii

something NOT mentioned, the low light focus ability will be a drastic improvement with the XR

along with that, many quality if life improvements
lugs no longer flop everywhere
a proper stills to video toggle
hold and scroll
gray AF point, I havent forgot this sucker
codecs available, if anything like the s3, will be huge in practice
digital mi hotshoe
new universal scroll wheel.... absolutely huge

of course there is hell to pay pricewise, it is a solid upgrade. This body is better than the one on the Siii and with that new wheel, I'd take the body over the A1 body..... I think it's safe to say, it offers the very best body controls on any sony camera, the wheel and mode switch really put it over.

you can say that 70% of what you're paying for is quality of life.

It's rather clear they didn't want to cut off A9 II sales which would happen imo if the A7 IV had stacked sensor and more than 10 fps.

I’m leaning towards waiting for the A9III also. May pick up a Z9 to satisfy my GAS in the meantime.

Sony should have this all worked out in time for the A76 just around the corner in 2028.

😄

I toyed with the idea getting the R3, but I love the form-factor of the A9 series.

I kinda agree with you, this looks like most of the things are QOL related and this is fine. Many people gonna be happy with it and the AF looked amazing compared to my old but otherwise great A7R III.

We will see how it goes when more full reviews pops up tomorrow with way more insight than Northrup basic one. It just looks like Sony played very safe with this one to not overstep on A9 II territory with more fps, better evf etc... and at the same time kept sensor at 33 Mpix to not kill A7R IIIA sales.

I may change my mind when like you said i will get A7 IV in my hands and test it out but for now im happy to wait for A7R V to upgrade from my RIII and... cry when i pay for it.

If people think USD $2599 is too high wait until you see the AUD pricing which is always extremely inflated.

AUD pricing I’d expect it to be around $4000 at least as the Canon R6 is $2499 USD but launched at $4300 AUD then went on sale to as low as $3500 at one stage. If I still had my A7III I could probably sell it for around $1800 to $2000 AUD max so that would be a lot out of pocket, probably too much for me.

The only time I ever feel good about the CAD prices is when I look at the AUD prices

Glad we can make you feel better about your pricing haha. Although to be fair, Sony Aus are usually quite fair/aggressive with their pricing. For example I know the 24GM usually goes for $1399 USD but I’ve seen it as low as $1600 AUD.

Don’t care about the FPS for my purposes but this does feel kind of underwhelming for a portrait photographer. I guess the price will be more important for me now. Wasn’t a big issue before but now it feels like I might be hunting for a used 7RIV.

I’m in the same boat as you but for landscapes. I have an aging A7RII and really wanted the new menus and speedy performance but I think I’m gonna bite the bullet.

The secret sauce of the A7 III was it sub $2,000 price point at launch. I'm sure the A7 IV will be "better" camera in every possible aspect (erg, menu, AF, MP, color science, programmability, speed, etc, etc) but keeping the price at $2K would have been the real competition killer.

So image quality is the same, IBIS is worse, Menu/touch is better and AF is better. Certainly is not ground breaking like the A7III was based on his take but I guess a decent upgrade.

What a face palm from Tony to have this video released ahead of time. Sony must be royally pi-ed + many people won't view the real one tomorrow, thus his views, i.e. income, will go down. Major faux pas!

I hope Sony stops sending him gear to review and fines him the amount written in the NDA, which could be substantial, normally it's enough to discourage you from even trying.
If not, then I'll be disappointed in Sony actually.

If Sony does nothing then I think it's a big win for Tony because of all the publicity the video created for his channel, which in turn will result in increased income.

I remember something similar happened with the A7siii, and I don't think Sony fined the German guys. So maybe Tony knew about it and thought he could get away with it?

That was my thinking at first too, Tony might have done it on purpose, but then I realized that everyone is watching his video on other channels, so it doesn't drive any traffic to his channel per se.

I had several of them in my time.
