p.13 #1 · Pre-order: Sony Alpha a7 IV Mirrorless

I find the camera is a significant improvement over A7 III: all the new features including much better UI, much improved AF, higher resolution, fully articulating screen, built-in video stabilization, etc..
I really don't care about fps and even if I cared, 10f/s is more than enough for vast majority of people. What I care about is the overall responsiveness the camera: how fast it becomes ready to take photos after being turned on and, after it having taken a shot. My A7r iii is not adequately fast on these matters to my satisfaction. I am hoping A7 iv is faster. Moreover, I hate it when the camera throws an error message to my fact (say after I press a button mistakenly) because the camera remains unresponsive until the default message timing is passed. I am hoping this has improved as well. A7 iv is surely faster camera than A7 iii and A7r iii at least for its much improved AF and UI. An abstract fps number is of little value to me.

Currently, the ideal resolution for me is in the 36-42mp range. A7 iv is only slightly lower than my ideal range but, I think I prefer a 33mp camera over a 61mp one ( well, considering other improvements over the A7r iv too). It seems A7 iv is my next camera body probably as a second body to my A7r iii or I may just replace.

I wish they do the same with A7c mk II!

I sure wish the A1 had gotten the flippy screen. I refuse to buy a $7000 camera with the same POS LCD that's been on every alpha since the beginning of time.

Hopefully this is Sony signaling that the flippy is the default screen now moving forward.

Do you really think he released his video to other random channels ahead of time....giving up all monetization and pissing off Sony?

Most likely his account was hacked. Give the guy a break...he may have to sell off his mansion now...

Tony pulled the video hours ago but not before copies were made. I have seen at least one copy pulled with Sony copyright.

Was it ever really on Tony's channel? The original link was a Chinese YT site with 388 subscribers.

All I know is he is a shameless and sometimes clueless but very successful click bite master.

My guess (unless someone can confirm that it was actually public on Tony's channel) is that his account was hacked and the video was copied as he would have had it uploaded but listed as private until 10AM tomorrow.

big youtubers often list as unlisted to check for copyright and monetization..... from there, someone CAN steal the link, especially if he has a private, not so private audience that views for errors and to get feedback from small private audience.

Really?
Unless you shoot a lot of “selfie” videos, I really see no point of fully articulated screens. I find A1’s screen much easier to use/operate the camera than the A7SIII. I regularly shoot with both. A1’s type screen is “centered” on the camera while fully articulated screens “hang” off the side. For my way of shooting, A1’s screen allows for better subject tracking.

I own a “$7000” camera for its AF and video capabilities not the LCD screen type though

If it is I will not be buying another Sony body. But that's not really a big deal because I don't really need a better camera than the Riv and A1. So I guess Sony is saving me money

I am not in the market for an a74, but I really do hope that a flip out screen is not the future of Sony bodies.

Edit: I just read 2 comments before me where the same concern was brought up. I am indeed happy that at least the A1 was spared this change too.

Count me in with those who much prefer the tilt screen over the A7SIII/A7IV flippy.

Now give me a Z9 screen and I'd be even happier.

$2600 for an entry level camera that shoots 10fps? Yikes. Id much rather pay an extra $200 and get an a7R III. Heck, you can get an international model a7R IV for $2900. The a7IV is overpriced by about $500 IMO

No way in hell Tony leaked his own video, lol. What a ridiculous suggestion, it doesn’t benefit him at all. Sony’s pissed, his ad revenue is certainly going to take a huge hit, and he’s being shamed by the community (more than normal). It’s an L for him.

Back to the camera…
Did the A7RIV have real time tracking? I’m wondering how much better of an AF system this will have over the A7RIV. I don’t shoot a lot of action these days, the occasional skate session, but it’s not my bread & butter. The A7IV still has an AA filter too, right?

Fully articulating screens are really useful if you shoot in portrait orientation at high or low angles. Also I shoot a lot of still life/product shots and tend to hold stuff in my background or like to adjust things while being behind the camera so having the fully articulating screen makes it much easier. I always found the play memories app more inconvenient that a flippy screen with a remote trigger.

Really depends on the person but for me I can’t own a camera without one now.

The A7RIV has Real-time tracking. It has phase-detect up to f/11 (the A7/A7II/A7RII/A7RIII are limited to f/8). The sensor readout of the A7RIV is slower than A7RIII which probably affects AF performance.

The previous plain A7 cameras have had half an optical low pass filter--meaning it only worked vertically--maybe to help phase-detect. The A9 models seem to have a normal full two way filter. Sony doesn't publish these like they do the lack of filter on other models.
