I can actually perfectly explain every single of the lenses, but when you line them up, I admit it does seem slightly excessive (which is why I took the photo ). In a covid free year they would all get quite some mileage.

I had a chance to hold and play around with this lens for the first time yesterday. It is a MONSTER. It is not a lens I would keep on the camera all day long or walk around with. But then again, 3 primes would cost and weigh as much, and take up more space.

More images! :-)

No explanation required. Pardon me while I bow and pay homage to their elegance!

"casual" is not a word I would use when it comes to describing this lens. I posted this photo in another thread (yes, I have my problems...), and even that doesn't come to do it justice. The lens is huge, big, heavy, and did I mention huge? Plus normal filters won't fit (95mm diameter; I have the Night Sky filter for it, though, and use it on the 50L as well).

It's superb but for normal uses, or as your generic standard zoom, I'd get the 24-70 or 24-105 on any day. As for the fire engine... yes (100%

Good lord! I wish I had your "problems". Or at least could afford to have your "problems"

The size/weight doesn't bother me as my everyday walk around lens is the 7lb 500 f/4 II, so it would be a welcomed break.
Most likely I'll get cold feet and just go with the RF 24-70 but man would it be nice to have that "Do-all" lens.

Glad to see this thread. I got this lens just around the time COVID started and, as a result, I haven't been able to use it much for my intended purpose of events. It's huge and imperfect but there's also no other zoom like it. I find that you can shoot it at any aperture for portraits and events. For landscape use the main issue is field curvature. For good results across the frame you either need to stop down quite a bit or, preferably, you can focus stack and it is excellent even at wide apertures. Here is a range of images:

I use this lens a ton more than I anticipated. I expected to haul it out for low light events, but I wind up dragging it along all over the place. I've lost a couple pounds in the process.

Another use I've come to have with it: it's my webcam lens. It's funny to see who notices when you're on a web meeting at f/2. The zoom allows me to focus in on my head so I don't need to clean the office, or go wide if I have colleagues on the same meeting.

I pre-ordered the lens but it is still not in stock yet. So I rented one for a weekend wedding. I shot the whole wedding almost used this lens only (couple of details with macro, and couple of wedding hall with wide angle. I like this lens and I am sure I will keep my order. When I got the lens first, I was surprised how big and heavy it is. After mounted it on the camera (R5 without grip), I do not feel it is that big and heavy though. Because I only used one lens and one camera during the entire wedding, I felt very comfortable without carrying two cameras and keep changing lenses. If you shoot weddings, events and family portraits, high school seniors etc. I think this is a great lens to have. For travel, 24-105 should be a better choice.

Nice shots from the northwest. When I went to Toketee the light was horrible. I need to go back on a cloudy day/in the morning.

Thanks marximus4192!

Anytime after midmorning can project harsh light on the west facing Toketee Falls. I always bring ND filters here. Lighting was diffused on my recent visit due to smoke from fires, which make the falls illumination easier to deal with. Though there was nothing I could do about the highliners who were setup.

Some very nice photos in this tread, I found one from an AD in NJ - everyone else seem completely sold out and back ordered - so I pulled the trigger. It should be here by Friday.

I had ND filters, but I was there close to sunset:P. Surprising to see slacklining there. It looks like they'd have difficulty finding anchors for the line.

The 28-70mm is my only RF lens. I know the OP has just got one, but I'm glad to see an image thread on the Canon board. On a gripped R5, the lens balances very well. I suspect the f/1.2 RF primes are a hair better in every way, but for my uses, the zoom's flexibility cannot be beat.

I enjoy how the lens renders tones and colors. It is superb for portraiture (skin tones are very easy to get right) and events/photojournalism (which I sometimes shoot, but do not want to share right now), but stopped down it works really well for travel/handheld landscape photos (though I am not the pickiest about my corners). The lens is heavy, large, and expensive. It's a stop slower than primes, but a stop faster than zooms. It splits the difference very well, I think.

I purchased a used version here in the B/S pages, but forgot I had ordered one from Canon. I returned the Canon one so keep your eyes open, maybe it will be available this week.

Canon had it in stock very briefly two days ago, but with their online store it's hard to know if it is really in stock, or back-ordered. I got burned by Canon on a refurbished 70-200 a while back, so I am hesitant to order. They really need to fix how they track what is in stock.

I知 borrowing a buddies to shoot a wedding today and it痴 the second time I致e seen this monstrosity in person, first time I値l have hands on with it for a good number of hours, so I知 excited to see what it can produce. I知 marrying it with my R5 & R6, one of which has the grip and the other does not. I agree that the grip is almost an absolute necessity to balance this beast out. I知 still in absolute awe at the sheer size of this thing (here come the jokes). It痴 not a focal range I tend to use that often, I prefer a bit more distance and compression, but I知 excited get some time with it.

I知 actually worried I may end up liking it, which means I値l have the find somewhere to hauk my kidney so I can afford it.
