I have a Z50 and a Z5 but my favorite is still my D850. I've been toying around with the idea of getting a 300mm f/4 pf. I have an old 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 that I just leave on the D850 set to 300mm. Test say that it is pretty mediocre at this setting. I shot this morning with the D850 in crop mode and still had to crop it at least 50%. Will the 300 f/4 pf do all that much better?
I would hate to drop the money on the 300mm f/4 pf and not see all that much of a difference.

Used 300 f4 PF's are pretty reasonable right now. Being able to shoot f4 AND enjoy
the option of using the TC-14E III @ f5.6 w/o taking much of an AF hit, is huge!

A nine mile dirt road leads into Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness. Roughly halfway between Phoenix and Tucson. I hiked in a couple miles from the trailhead and camped for two nights back in March 2011. Only saw two other people on the hike out.

I left Aravaipa Canyon, packed up and drove the 7 1/2 hours to the Grand Canyon. It was 85 degrees when I left Aravaipa and dropped to below 30 degrees that evening. Difference of about 4600 ft in elevation. I only had a summer weight bag with me so I stopped into the store at Grand Canyon Village and bought a Pendleton blanket for a little extra warmth.
