I just got this lens used to replace my Samyang 1.4 for portraits. I love the rendering of the Sammy but I get way way too many misses with it even with the latest firmware on my a7iii. I think I will live with the arguably harsher rendering in exchange for the much better AF. I need to do a real shoot with it and see how I feel after that though.
Looking forward to your shots with this lens! You can still induce background blur for portraits with this GM. It does have a tad more structure, sure. I’d be interested in your take between this and the Samyang. As you said, AF can be super frustrating at times with the Samyang. I’ve found the GM to be very accurate by comparison.
My last ‘people and portraits’ post has several portrait examples using this lens but I also didn’t go for ultimate background separation there.

I will try to do some edits soon! It’s a worthy upgrade and I’m enjoying it a lot. I bought it for the AF and it has delivered. I have a good copy of the Samyang but the GM is noticeably sharper on an a7iii. The files are just cleaner in general. Less LOCA, less out of focus shots, less distortion, less flare, more contrast, more neutral colors, etc. I like it with diffusion filters, which dirty it up a bit.

So you got the A7RIV, this is thé body to use the 35GM on! The color nuances and details are endless with this combo.
I was tempted to sell the 35 GM a few days ago, since I bought some zooms.
Then, I saw your comment in this or some other thread stating that the 35 GM was working really well on the a7RIV or a7RIVA,
and decided to keep it and try it out. I bought a flash that was delivered today and with it, the a7RIV really comes through.
It needs good light and if you give it good light, man this thing is beautiful. 60 megapixels beautiful!
Man, 35 isn't the most interesting focal length for me atm, but this lens looks to be the closest to perfection that currently exists. If Sony doesn't come out with anything more to my taste in a few years, a lot of the images here (& in the flickr gallery) are what's gonna get me to pick this lens up.
Really enjoying this thread, thanks to all who have posted pictures and feedback.
I've just sold my Canon 5DmkIV kit including my beloved 35mm f1.4 L. I loved that lens although the LoCa was a a bit much sometimes.
So i'm in the market for something that can create those dreamy portraits with the subject close and wide open where the background melts away but can also work as an everyday, always on the camera lens doing family, street etc. and also produce sharp landscapes. Looks like this lens might be the one? I was also considering the Sigma f2.
One of the reasons to switch solely to Sony was to travel smaller and lighter. I also have the 35/2.8 but i only use that if i want to travel superlight as it's OK but nothing special.
I like the idea of using some of the MF Voigtlanders but realistically i need good AF.
I was thinking this, and maybe the 20 G would make a good pair?

This is the one. Not as background melting as the Sigma f/1.2, portable; but not as much as the Sigma f/2 (which is also a good lens, but is beaten by the GM in nearly every category). It strikes a good balance between the two and also tears everything else to shreds with sharpness corner to corner (even at f/1.4!!!). Easily a do-everything 35mm lens. I carry it for street photography with ease.
Sure, that’s enough spacing from 35. A 20-35-85 is a pretty good combo for example. 24-35 can be a little too close together for a kit depending on your needs.

That is reassuring to hear, thank you!
The 20 G seems like a good complement in that the close focus ability gives some really nice bokeh, almost like the 35GM's.
I used to use the 35 L a lot but stupidly used it less when i got the 'more convenient' 24-70 L II (even though i was most often at 35!) and the 16-35 f4 L which i only ever shot at 35 or 16 and generally found that i wasn't very good with the 16mm unless i was taking a straight on landscape. So i've been trying to rethink my whole approach and base on primes although i imagine at some point i'll add the Sigma 24-70 2.8 DG DN as a versatile single lens out for the day landscape option.

Been shooting Sony for awhile now. I have bought and tried basically everything from Manual, to third party, to GM. I have ended up with that exact combo of the 35gm and 20mm G (which could be a GM). To give you an idea of how small this can be for travel here is what I currently use. Works out beautifully. Don't always bring the table top tripod but it fits even in this small bag (which I guess is actually an insert. Bag for me though with peak design strap.)

Neat, simple bag!
I also have the 20G, 35GM & FE85. I usually go with the 35mm & 85mm though & the 20mm is more often than not just for night skies. Oh, that's AF, I also have the Voigtlander 40/1.2
