p.3 #135mm blind test p.2
I'm pretty aligned with others here. I'd guess the RX1 is my top choice in these. Just giving my top 3's:

1. Bokeh at 0.6 meters: 5, 1, 4
2. Bokeh/background at 1.2 meters: 5, 3, 1
3. Flare: 4, 3, 1
4. Bokeh and transition at f2 at 10-12 feet: 5, 1, 4
5. F8: Any
6. Grass transition: 3, 6, 1

Thanks for doing this kind of thing, it's very interesting. I remember seeing the last one and being impressed comparing the RX1's f2 image even to f1.4 on others, that lens is special.

You’re welcome—you of all people know what a pain these are to put together! Maybe I’ll hold on the reveal till you give your preferences
A lot of pain indeed.

Bokeh at 0.6 meters: 5, 4 (good), the rest pretty busy with no clear order
Bokeh/background at 1.2 meters: 5,1, the rest in no particular order
Flare: 4, 5, the rest in no particular order
Bokeh and transition at f2 at 10-12 feet: 1, 4, 5 are mostly smooth, the rest a little nervous but not a big difference overall
F8 with tree (focal point) 12 feet away: 1 and 3 with foreground in focus and background out of focus towards the corners. I prefer the others.
Transition Zone: 3 and 6 ahead, the rest in no particular order

For my preference I would probably weight the different scenes 1: 15%, 2: 45%, 3: 15%, 4: 5%, 5: 10%, 6: 10%

I hope the Sigma 2/35 comes out well, I just bought one yesterday on David's recommendation
Well, based on one scene in which it did really well against bokeh famous competition, and my report about a few more! More testing to do, though it is super promising, modulo a little swirl and cats eyes in some scenes.
Are you finding your copy to vignette noticeably? More than you’d expect for lens of this class?

Or the whole image just feels a little bit darker than it should for an F2
Yes huge vignetting despite only average optical vignetting. It isn’t that sudden vignetting either...it spreads across much of the frame. Correctable and it doesn’t worry me too much, presumably one of the interesting trade offs. What is super surprising is that the *amount* of blur at f2 seems very high, as though it’s faster than sone f2 35s, and yet the vignetting....

I noticed both as well, the whole image is dark with high degrees of vignetting outside the center of the frame though, as you say, it is not abrupt. Shooting these multiple lenses on a tripod, the sigma is always darker by about a half stop. Interestingly, the RX1 vignettes less than the ILC lenses so there’s about a stop difference between the 35i and RX1 even though they are both the same focal length and f-stop technically. I guess that’s why some measure t-stops as well.

It is a bummer for astro. And the 35i is very well corrected for coma too.

It’s funny you say that, I feel like depending on the distance or something I either get more depth of field or less DOF than I should. It’s a little bit confusing. I think I will shoot it against the RX1 just watch the focus fall off.

I don't pay that much attention to vignetting (well, unless it's huge as @f1.2 Bigma ) as I mostly view pictures with corrections already applied, but I do have the same impression about f2 blur on 35i.

I’m not 100% sure, but I remember hearing that quite a bit of vignetting correction is baked into RAW on the Rx1, even if you choose “shading compensation off”. Of course hard to prove, since you can’t take it off and take the contacts!

Ah, that would make sense. It does show unusually low vignetting.

The RX1 also has above average optical vignetting. Funny it's still "the benchmark" for all these new lenses.

All the series have these five lenses only, with two exceptions:

1. RX1
2. FE 35 1.8
3. Loxia 35
4. Pentax 31 Ltd
5. Sigma 35i

The two exceptions:
First, on the flare test, I was rudely interrupted by an off leash and aggressive dog that knocked over my tripod and was causing issues. By the time everything was under control and I could shoot again I could not get the same framing and the sun had dipped. The CV 35/2 was added to the above mentioned 4, but no RX1.

Second, on the fence series, a GM 24 was added and was shot in crop mode. All six of those files were exported at the same resolution (10 mp).

No, the numbers are randomized across series as stated in the original posts, but sorry it was unclear.

To be honest, I'm surprised how tough series 2 (bokeh at 1.2m) is for the lenses here...
I'm sure #5 is RX1, I also suspect you threw the Pentax into the mix, but I don't know how wide it really is so my guess would be that's it's either #1 (but that doesn't look too wide) or #4 (but the rendering is a bit of a let down there). I'm afraid #4 is 35i, which does not make it look too good in this particular scene...

Edit: oops, missed the post with partial reveal. Anyways, (in series 2) I'd like #1 to be 35i .

series 2 is the most interesting for me as it best reveals the weakness in rendering.
my guess is that the RX1 and Sigma are #1 and #5, Loxia and Pentax #3 and #4 and the Sony 35/1.8 should be #2 with the worst rendering.

Ah, that explains why it was completely impossible to guess anything at all.
Sorry, but that little "detail" made the test far less good, since one could not draw any conclusions based on the behaviour at different distances.

Edit: I thought 5 in both series #1 and #2 must be the RX1, but then came the rest and screwed that idea. But with the above info, I still think those are the RX1.

I makes it harder to guess which is which, but that's not (I take it) the aim of the exercise.

The point is to rate the quality in each scene without knowing which is which, and randomising helps with that!

Agreed, good setup, otherwise one giveaway shares you opinion of the others. I was wondering which lens was drawing the rough bokeh, pretty sure I could pick the Loxia out now that know it’s in the mix. Ironically probably rated it near or at the bottom on most every test except for f/8, but I’m still fond of the lens.

I can tell you all whenever you want--just let me know. I fixed 4 and 5, so your post says 4, but it's 5. And 5 does seem to be people's favorite.
