Nice job Sony, now just take this sensor and put it in the A7c body. Give us the new AF/colors/menu and you can keep the video specs as they are not needed Winner winner.

Is there any possibility for A9/A9II/A7RIV users to get FW with that bird eye focus?
People keep asking this question, but I think Sony has shown it has no intention of "backporting" the new features into old products...
Otherwise, we'd see multi-colored focus point already in the older cameras...

For lots of reasons that supposed 15 stops of DR doesn't tell us much. First, that is at low ISO not high ISO. Second, it tells us nothing about patterns in the noise which can make or break high ISO performance. Third it is a bit of a made up number. You can't talk about DR without making some assumptions and Sony tells us nothing about the assumptions they are making to get that number. Fourth, we have seen that number before. Sony said the same thing about the A7r IV, but its high ISO performance isn't as good as some other Sony cameras, notably the A7r III, IMO, has a bit better high ISO performance.
So, I think we will have to wait until the camera is actually tested before we know about its performance at both low ISO and high ISO. I am hopefully it will do both types of shooting well. I expect that it will be a bit worse at both types of shooting, however, than camera specifically designed for better low ISO or high ISO shooting. I cautiously realize, nevertheless, that the announcement does not to assure that one type of shooting or the other or both might be less than we hope for....Show more →
Caution is a good word at this point and definitely need more testing. It's important to note that by every apples to apples comparison, the high ISO noise performance on the A7R4 is equal to or better than the A7R3 when down sampled from 61MP to 42MP. Having said that, I expect the A1 to come in better than the downsampled A7R4 due to improvements with this new, never seen before sensor. I'm sure we'll know fairly soon where it stacks up.
Topaz Denoise AI has completely changed the game on high ISO noise and this is not the huge unsolvable hardware issue that it once was.

Great spec and Im sure that AF is incredible. Im a little bemused that they didn't add a flip screen though?! For a truly hybrid camera it will be a nightmare on a lot of gimbals
At the German Sony live talk they mentioned this and that pros Sony asked (with connection to AP) were against it. The less moving parts the better.
I don't need it either, so am fine with this ;-)

Would be nice, I really don't need a $6500 camera, also hoping this effects the pricing later this year cause I'm sure as hell not buying anything now...also if Nikon can finally put out a Z mount 200-600 I might not even care. ShootPDX wrote:
It may have a slight, acute impact between now and shipping, but they’re not cannibalizing the a9 line if that’s what you’re asking.

My opinion on 'crappy' back screens by the way, is that for my use until they make ones that have 0 glare, I don't care. I use it for menus and histograms only, if I'm doing a detailed chimp I use the OVF anyway.

I can't believe we are in a time where this is now an official highlight spec of a camera
take off mode, hehe
Dedicated Real-time Eye AF Bird Mode lets you select the bird to be tracked and the camera will automatically detect the bird's eye and track it, regardless if the bird is in flight or still. This mode even works once a sitting bird takes flight

Sounds like an incredible camera! Total and complete overkill for my purposes. So timing this "essential purchase" for my photography will likely involve a much larger purchase for my better half to keep a happy household.

First, you may want to ask JMAN13, who reports that there is a significant difference. Second, it's the combination of using the lens IS and the body IS that takes the image stabilization to a whole different level, like with the Olympus OMD em1 Mark III and certain lenses. . . . But I agree, you need to really try it yourself in your use scenarios to see whether it makes a difference. That's why I'm on a waiting list for a Canon R5. . . It also had the added benefit of occupying my energy/mind during the ongoing pandemic isolation.

Extraordinarily skeptical of that degree of improvement from Sony to Canon IBIS.

My gut tells me the new AI is tied to the new processor and probably to the 120 AF calculations per second (2x the A9 and 4x the A7RIV). So I'd give it a very low chance. The A7SIII would have the best bet of getting it but Bird Eye-AF is not available in video mode even on the A1 so I don't think Sony will be bothered to bring it to the A7SIII.
