No question this is a stellar optic! But to my eyes, there's something a wee bit more special from the 58/1.4, at least when it "works" for the photographer In that same thought, the 105/1.4 is special too. I think it would be really interesting to see direct comparisons from all 3 lenses and the 50/1.8S in a wide open side-by-side shootout
There's a little comparison earlier in this thread, but more of a test shot than an actual shoot (still, much appreciated!).
The three lenses (50 1.2, 1.8 and 58) are all different from each other of course but I've struggled to see an advantage with the 50 1.2 that would justify the price. I have the other two and love the smaller size and weight (one sharper and one with more character). The 58mm will likely see me to the end of my photography days, I love it that much. So like you, I see the 50mm f1.2 images prove that it's an incredible lens, but I'm not sure it's a better option than having the other 2.

There’s just something about the way this lens renders light that makes it stand out from the rest of the Z lens line up, not including the Noct, which is one of a kind. It makes subjects really pop with great 3 dimensionality.
Interesting, so far I'm thinking that the 58mm f1.4G provides a stronger 3D-like image, but that's not to take anything away from the 50mm f1.2 as being a great piece of glass. Curious though if others are seeing the same / different than I?

The large front element has the advantage of reducing vignetting, which also results in brighter and softer bokeh at large apertures, and fewer cat's eyes in the bokeh if stepped don't a bit, say to f/1.8. Zeiss Milvus lenses (and presumably Otus lenses, to an even larger degree) show a similar effect, compared to Nikon Z f/1.8 lenses. The obvious drawbacks are weight, size, and cost, so I still think the Nikkor Z f/1.8 lenses hit the sweet spot. But for certain situations, the advantages of the f/1.2 lens just outweigh the disadvantages.
It is to me. It's right up there with the 105 1.4 for me. supermario343 wrote:
Received my copy yesterday.. love the lens so far. Maybe it’ll become a Z classic 😎
Just ordered mine today and I'm getting it tomorrow. I'm excited for this lens.
I definitely like the 50mm field of view and I'm considering downsizing to the Z trinity and this lens. I don't want to buy this expensive lens and have it sit on a shelf. I guess I'll have to make a choice between the 35 1.8s or the 40 f2 as a small walk around lens.

Did anybody keep their 50 1.8s?
Nope..I sold the 50 1.8. The 50 1.2 just shines and excels that much more. You will love it when you see that dof.

The only negative beside cost is the size/weight. If you can put it in your bag and can handle the weight it blows all other 50mm lenses out of the water except for the 0.95 Noct which is even more expensive and even bigger/heavier.

I still have mine, although I imagine I'll be putting it up for sale in the near future to raise Z9 funds or to go towards other gear.
The 50 1.8S is definitely a lot smaller and lighter, and the shallow plane of focus at f1.2 isn't always useful, but my preference is definitely the 50 1.2S despite the weight.
