It absolutely looks as though Nikon designed this lens to be shot wide open most of the time -- and good on them for that!
I would be really interested in a side-by-side with this lens at f1.8 and the 1.8 lens wide open, then again both at f2.8 as a real-world in-use comparison.
I had a bit more fun today with 50/1.2s as a friend called me this morning to see if I wanted to see Chinese Opera The organizer was kind of enough to let me go backstage before the performance.
All shot at f1.2, no sharpening added. All pictures adjusted a bit in ACR.
I thought the Sigma Art 50/1.4 was big until the Zeiss Otus 50 came along and then the new 58 Noct which is huge. I had to return the new 58 Noct as much too heavy to handle and I rather carry the 200/2 VII in this case.
The poor old 58 Noct and the 50/1.2 Ais are tiny next to big brother. I guess I should do a shoot out someday with all my Fifties.....
Here are the 50/1.2 S and the Sigma Art 50/1.4 and the tiny 50.1.2 Ais.
The sigma 50 is great and it seems that Sigma migt produce lenses for Nikon. Ya never know!
This new 50/1.2 S is vert resemblant to the 105/1.4 E which is a great lens. I will try to do a shoot out between the two.....someday. A combo of sharpness WO and Bokeh creaminess.
So far and what is important for me is the color rendition and how it deals with skin and I like what I see.

suteetat - these photos are amazing !
They show so clearly the qualities of this lens and actually even I will probably not have the chance to get it, they are making me
wanting it very much !
Not often did I see this clarity of sharpness and realistic and vibrant colors combined with such a wonderful and natural bookeh!

Thanks for your kind word. I totally agree about the color. Granted I adjusted white balance quite a bit but I noticed that lately, especially with Z7 ii, I am manipulating WB less and less and don't deviate much from the auto WB ( usually a0 or a1) nearly as much as I did with D850, D500 for example. After saying that, during the session, I used both 50/1.2S and Sigma Art 135/1.8 and I find that NEF file from 50/1.2s has much more pleasing color than from Sigma (for my own personal taste) and require less manipulation there. In comparison, Sigma seems to have more yellowish and dull green cast to it.
I just found this video
Comparing 50/1.2s and 50/1.8s . Matt gave no specific comment but below the video clip, he gave a link that you can download both nef and jpg files at various aperture to compare for yourself.
I am leaving tomorrow for a 4 days trip and hopefully I will have some fun with 50/1.2s, Noct Nikkor 58/.95 and 58/1.2 among other things.
It is a shame that you have missed reading the gear list used as I clearly indicate that an SB910 was used In case you don't know, the SB910 is a Nikon flash!
To elaborate as you are completely missing the mark, Shooting C/U (as in Close Up) with a bare flash would get a result of a hard light. If you so bother to look more carefully at the eyes reflection, you will notice a small light point reflection which indicates a flash used.
To enlighten your ignorance of reading a portrait image and C/U. When you shoot with a BARE Flash, it is considered a hard light and the result is not very flattering and to be avoided. In this case of evaluating the lens, it came out trump against a hard test and the skin is smooth as a result of the soft transition between the focus on the eye and the skin complexion. This is one of the beauties of the 50/1.2 S which is great for Fashion and Beauty photgraphy
Other photographers are publishing plenty of Bokeh images characteristic.
Outstanding series.
If the new Noct .95 was the same money as this lens, I would still pick the 50 1.2S out of the two.
Results are spectacular plus it has AF.
But, the size comparo says it all for my needs. I already have the Sigma Art 50 and think that it is too big for a 50. The new 50 1.2S dwarfs it. I would never take that lens out of the house. Studio work perhaps...

Please. - just look at your pics and perhaps think again ( you may also compare them to the other photos here in this thread ) .
What I am saying is : unfortunately not one of this pics show any of the qualities of this lens unfortunately !
Actually they look really like being taken by a kit lens - and not even a good one when looking at some of these which are not even sharp to my eye !
Sorry to say so - but the best one from your pics is the one where you show the size comparison of these 3 lenses .
IF you don't get my point now, I can not help it anymore !
The wait is over, finally! I pre ordered the morning it was announced from B&H for those who are also waiting.
In terms of my initial thoughts, it definitely feels heavy in the hands. The weight and size remind me of my Sigma 135mm 1.8. The focus ring feels so buttery smooth! Focus speed seems to be fairly good. Hopefully I can take some pictures this afternoon and give you guys some more examples and impressions.
