Anyone know how well this lens covers a 44x33cm sensor at infinity?

Quite a redesign to accommodate the narrower throat and the thinner stack. It looks like the VM version should be cheaper given a lesser amount of exotic elements. Any performance difference will be negligible, especially since they're optimized for different sensor stacks. I personally hate the screw-on hood on the FE version and prefer the bayonet hood (best still the Leica's built in style). I have had both the Leica APO and this lens in FE mount. I see very few compelling reasons to go with the Leica really. I personally like the rendering of the CV more, especially

The VM mount version is indeed cheaper and costs $50 less than the E-mount.

Unlike the E-mount, it does not come with a screw-on hood but a dedicated bayonet hood is available. (extra $$)

I'm wondering how this lens could perform when adapted to Sony after removing 3 APD elements.
Will buy this one if its still good enough, after all VM mount could be more versatile.

It's not just the 3 apd elements. Usually 50mm lenses designed for the Leica sensor do not perform optimally on the Sony. The exceptions are usually slower lenses like the Voigtlander 50mm f/3.5 Heliar.

Here is a latest example showing the CV 50/1.2 (SE vs M-adapted) on the Sony A7R IV:
https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1561782/32#15316872

The newer 50mm f/1.5 II performs even worse off-axis on the Sony.

Perhaps at f/5.6 and smaller, depth of field starts to mask any induced field curvature but it's yet to be seen how the 50/2 APO VM will performed adapted to thicker sensors.

Impressive review!
I'm actually a Fuji user, not sure if Fuji's sensor is also thicker than Leica's ?
Per my knowledge, Fuji does not have low-pass filter.
If that is the case, maybe it will perform as good as on Leica when adapted to Fuji.

Or perhaps I should go for a Sony body + VE 50 APO-Lanthar. I went through your review and love that lens sooooo much...

There are 12 pictures at dc.watch showing the lens with and without hood:

The last two show the round aperture at F/2.8 and F/5.6

With hood mounted the combo looks a lot like the special edition black paint APO-Summicron-M 50 F/2 LHSA (there is also a black chrome BC version of this special edition):

I doubt anyone started from ground up for digital would have gone with a thin stack like Leica. Leica did it cause most of their lenses back then were designed for film. No AA is not indicative of sensor stack thickness.

I think I have seen that the hood is retailing for $110 dollars, so the VM is $50 cheaper without the hood, and $60 more expensive with the hood. Not a big difference in price either way. I will probably get the hood even though it is ridiculously expensive for what it is. It looks like it is pretty nicely designed.

Thanks for the link. Now I'm curious what the shape of the aperture is at f/4... Also, the colors of the coatings are very pretty and kind of mimic the RGB of the APO Lanthar stripes.

As an armchair quarterback remark, I wonder given the rather small diameter of the front element(s), whether Cosina could have made the lens narrower in diameter to reduce viewfinder blockage?

There is something to say about having a Sony A7rII Kolari UT Sensor and a Sony A7r V3 Kolari Thin Sensor cameras as well as stock A7rIII and A7r cameras.

The very nice CV 75/1.5 VM's hood was included. Voigtlander reversed that policy after this lens...

I wouldn't mind buying a hoodless CV 75 for $110 less, too bad that's not how that works

They should be making lenses with built in hoods.

I understand the allure, but I personally hate that :-). What I'd like to see though, if the big manufacturers followed the same standard for hood bayonets. Would save some plastic waste & we could buy cheap and convenient aftermarket hoods for anything. They could sell all lenses for 5-10$ more to cover the cost they lose with their ridiculous brand name hood business.

For example I really really and I mean REALLY don't like Loxia lenshoods, my only hope is that someday someone would make 3d models of 3d printable Loxia hoods, especially for the 21mm..

This is a really good idea. Someone should already make such a hood (or models to 3D print such a hood) for the CVM 50 f/2 APO. I have to believe that if we had to pay for the original hood, there would be a pretty good business opportunity in after market hoods and it seems OEM hoods would have to be sold at more reasonable prices in the face of that competition. The after market hoods could also serve different taste for those who like small hoods even though they block less light, and those that prefer bigger hoods to shield the lens more. Hoods could be made of as light of plastic as possible or metal for more durability. I would love to see such a market develop.

Some people might like that, but it is not at all what I am looking for. I want a hood that attaches to the bayonet and that I can reverse in my bag.

It looks like they forgot to use a lens hood for their product shots.

The Leica lenses with the built-in hood are the best.
