Thanks for posting so many samples Juha. Looks great to my eyes.
I’d decided to put purchasing either the Sigma 35/2 or 65/2 on hold—partly because of my ongoing love affair with the 45/2.8 but mainly because I had yet to see any pictures made with either the 35 or the 65 that I found persuasive. Knowing that I would eventually find what I need to know from Flickr or FM, I’d decided to wait for a month or two, unless some images unexpectedly turned up from another source.
But I’d forgotten that Juha had ordered a 35/2 and his images provide exactly what I was interested in seeing. Juha mentioned in a previous post that he’d preordered the 24/3.5 and “might get into buying the 65mm as well after some time especially if I'm really impressed by 35/2 after using it for a while.” Since I’m never reluctant to spend other people’s money, I’d respectfully suggest to Juha that his 35/2 results already more than justify the purchase of a 65/2.

You’re samples look quite good Juha—thanks for posting as always. You’re the real sample gallery
How is the AF on your A7c? Both speed and focus acquisition.
It looks much better (less offensive really) than the FE 35 and Samy the more photos I see. Especially bokeh and rendering...all 3 are easily sharp enough for me.
I am trying to wait for the GM 35...but this is so comparatively compact and competent.
Thanks very much! I've not found any problems with AF when using this lens on my A7c, but I've been shooting static targets so I'm not sure how it works in terms of tracking of fast-moving subjects. AF has been fast and reliable for me so far, no noticeable issues at all. I've been using combination of AF-S and also touch tracking for close targets and either way AF has been smooth. MF is also very nice with this lens, the focusing ring is a bit wider than on the 45/2.8 DG DN which makes it even more comfortable to use.

Thanks so much, Genji (and all)! I'm already leaning towards getting the 65/2 as well, and I'll probably go for it during the year end holidays (after Christmas) when I have more free time. I just have 3 working days left this year and then it'll be Christmas + New Year holiday time. Been teleworking from home since late February with very few holidays... I'll trade in something for it so will need to visit Map Camera in person.
I also received the lens cap holder and the 35/2 DG DN T-Shift from Sigma today. I was using the magnetic cap on the lens with the holder attached to my bag today and although it's hard to pull out the cap when hood is used, I still managed to do it with some extra fiddling, so I think I'll continue to use the magnetic cap.
Thanks Juha! I think this 35 and 65 will be the PERFECT pair to have, as well as the 24 (although we know about it a lot less so far than of the other two).

Thanks! Those 65mm shots look very impressive indeed. Seeing those made me even more convinced to get it soon. Between the 4 lens Sigma I-series set and my CV collection I'm going to be pretty well covered for nice small(ish) native lenses for my A7C soon. That just leaves room for a nice native 28mm and for something longer than 65mm, e.g. in the 75-90mm range.
Thank you, Juha, for the wealth of sample shots. I have pre-ordered the Sigma 65mm, but after seeing your photos, I am tempted to forego comparing the Sigma 35 f/2 to the upcoming 35GM and simply order the 35 f/2 Contemporary now. My only remaining dilemma would be what to do with my Batis 40.

Someone get @Juha Kannisto@ a medal! And... hey... think you could do an AF-C test?
Thanks!! Not sure if I can do any proper AF-C testing as I'm almost exclusively shooting still subjects these days and there's no real opportunities for shooting any action unless it's some kind of an artificial test setup (and I'm not really into doing formal test shoots). My family members prefer not to have their photos published and I can't get them to run around to use them as test subjects. My son is already turning 18 and he quickly takes cover when I try to take any photos
I did shoot Japanese Awaodori, Yosakoi and Eisa dance festivals and other events while they were still happening in 2019 and earlier but this year all of those have been cancelled, so it's been pretty much casual walk-around shooting for me these days...

Thanks for posting more samples! Now we can see how the 35/2 really renders, without excessive processing and I really like what I see. Many sample images shared online had the white/black points exaggerated which increases global contrast in detrimental to rendering. Also, many photographers are not using silent or full mechanical shutter which also impacts rendering. I don't see any of this on your samples. At close distance there is residual SA which I think it's actually great news and evidence this lens has a balanced design.
I do think the Sigma 35/2 and 65/2 could be a great compact duo with high IQ + pleasant rendering. The 45/2.8 still stands on its own with a very unique look and perhaps will pair nicely with the new 24mm. I am definitely interested in testing the new Sony 35/1.4 GM @f/2 versus the Sigma 35/2 but the latter already wins on price and compactness if these are main considerations.

Thanks Fred! I use electronic/silent shutter with my A7C most of the time and I just switch to mechanical with anti-flicker on when there are artificial lights that could cause banding, usually in low light shooting with city & shop lights and then the shutter speed will be low. All the bokeh shots in daylight were with electronic shutter so there should be no negative impact on bokeh rendering.
I agree with your assessment on the lenses. I still have the Sony Zeiss 35/1.4 too and I'm happy with my copy but it's too big to used as a general walk-around lens. I'm not thinking about replacing it though so I haven't been considering the GM. This Sigma will surely be smaller, less costly and more perfectly fitting for the A7C in my view.
That's the one thing I really wish Sony would address as a firmware option, that you could setup the camera to shoot with electronic shutter when shutter time is faster than approx. 1/500s and with efcs/mechanical when slower.

That's interesting. Folks in other camps have complained that their camera defaults to e-shutter above 1/2000.
I wouldn't mind if you could choose the threshold in similar manner as the auto-iso min/max. And what kind of shutter it would use at which point. It all depends on the use case.

Seems like a pretty simple thing, huh?
I think the point from the other camp, was also harboring on the non-selectability ... moreover than the actual value. They were actually calling for higher than 1/2000 before the switch, iirc.
On my A7C I've set the custom key (thrash can key) to select silent shutter on/off. It brings up the menu item so there's another step required to change the setting, but it's rather quick. I wouldn't personally want to use an automatic selection just based on shutter speed since you can get different issues depending on whether full electronic or EFCS shutter is used (such as rolling shutter or the bokeh artifacts) and I'd like to make the selection by considering the shooting conditions other than shutter speed. E.g. when shooting fast moving subjects (where bokeh is not an important thing) I'd rather use EFCS on A7C and when shooting still subjects I'd always use full electronic unless there are artificial lights with possible banding issues (EFCS in those conditions). On my A9 I pretty much use full electronic all the time.
Not to say that such setting wouldn't be welcome for those who'd want to use it but I would probably not use it myself with my current main cameras.
About the USB-DOCK...
The L mount and Canon mount Dock do give the possibility not only to update the firmware, but also to customize the rotation sensitivity of the focus ring in MF mode...
For Sony E-mount users this option is not possible...
