A stunning and convincing performance with the 35mm GM, Adam. Great work.

Thank you, David. I will note that I did zero additional background blurring in post processing. So what you see in terms of the background 'melting away' is what you get.

Ive been out testing mine today and Im already in love with it :-) I felt the same way too about my Sigma 1.2 but I never used it as much as I wanted too because of the size and weight. I love the way the Sigma renders and it does have the bokeh edge but honestly, the Sony is so damn close for most applications.

Its a dream to use and its nailed every shot Ive thrown at it today. With the Sigma I definitely missed focus on some shots. Colour and contrast is amazing also.

No regrets.... If you like 35mm you should really get it.

Still waiting for my preordered 35gm here in Switzerland, the shop does know when it will arrive...

In the meantime, I rented a small atelier/shop space in our town (mainly as a non-home home-office for my day job), bought a printer (canon prograf 1000) and made some prints of my landscape work. Already sold one, a handheld bw converted hdr image taken with a fuji xt3 and 16-55mm lens. I guess oof rendering has suddenly become less important for my photography, so will prefer the added sharpness of the 35mm gm over my previous 35 1.4 za

Added sharpness for what?
Once the the sharpness is very high what is the meaning to add further?
Just to pixel peep on a pc screen or to break a record?
Most important to me is rendering which I can find in any picture just importing.
Hope the GM renders beautifully.
Biggest added value till now is on weight/dimension side.
Also flare resistance and distortion seems to be on the winner side.
TBC, AC correction and bokeh.

I think you'll find that they might mean adding sharpness to the sigma 1.2 to bring it up to the GM level - if anything, one might want to reduce sharpness for portraits with the GM (eg as you might want to do with the 90mm macro)

Another good comparison video between the Sigma 1.2 and GM. The one thing i’ll say is I prefer the GM colors in her side by side comparisons. I was also glad to hear about her af performance experience favoring the GM. http://

The thing with Julia's videos is that she makes every lens look great .
I think these lenses are so close in IQ, that small difference in focus distance, subject/camera position, etc. have bigger impact on the final picture. Sigma does seem more swirly though (and the GM seems to pick up more structure in the background) in the limited number of photos we got to see .

Any update on whether these are shipping today? My B&H order still says 4/12.

likewise. I pre-ordered the minute B&H opened for them.

It seems the lens is starting to trickle outside the US so hopefully it happens next week.

Best Buy is finally Sold out. Which is usually a good indicator they know how many they are getting and we might see them sooner than later. Unlike others they tend to not sell what they don't have in the pipe line. Hopefully we will see them soon

Luckily unaffected here! I’m glad they held it back a bit rather than be stuck with a ‘recalled’ lens. Thank you for sharing.

So I am still waiting for my pre-order like most here in the US. Hopefully a month from now I will have it. I'm a big fan of this focal length but all I currently have to use right now are all manual focus since after the announcement I sold both my FE 35/1.4 ZA and FE 35/1.8. I admit it may have been wiser to wait it out and own both at the same time to truly compare them for rendering, AF speed, AF accuracy but I took the plunge and will see if the risk was worth it. I still do own the Batis 40/2 to compare it to so that will be fun. For pure image quality I'll also test it against my Loxia 35/2 and a Nikon and Pentax primes I can adapt to my Sony.

I am expecting it to be the best but I am not worried about sharpness, Image quality (rendering) is what I am after most.

It will also be interesting to see more comparisons to the Sigma 35/2.0.

It should be a little stronger than the 40/2 CF wide open and f4 for each. Both it and the GM are very modern designs, the Batis has a lot of well-matched glass in it while being a less complex configuration.

The Loxia 35/2 is a very different lens, more a middle-aged style ex-ZM CZ lens with well-integrated colour and contrast and while being a strong center / weak outers at f2, it's surprisingly very good at f5.6, it's best aperture. Maybe compare them at wide open, f2 and f4-f5.6?

So far in terms of rendering it blows the FE35 f/1.8 out of the water aside from the focus breathing and, I guess, MFD, having owned both (also sold mine for the GM). The FE may have a slight edge for AF but it is pretty close. The transition zones are much better with the GM, CA is noticeably more controlled albeit not 100% perfect.

That being said, I haven’t compared it directly (such as f/1.8 for both) because I didn’t own them at the same time. My basic feel right now is that it is a sharp, contrasty modern design with most flaws minimized. Sharp as can be, perhaps won’t be as ‘dreamy’ as some light like. I can see that being the main trade off.

Whereas I did sometimes notice harsh out of focus areas with the FE, I have thus far not noticed this at all with the GM. Though, someone with more extensive testing experience will know better than I how much better it is in that aspect.

Any news from your dealers everyone ? Especially for people living in Europe ? Mine told me that they had no information regarding a future shipment. And the GM disappeared on Amazon (fr). A few days ago they estimated a delivery date around the 20th...
