That's the thing, IQ-wise they are differenent and it will come down to personal choice.
Telling people that one is simply better than the other is wrong. Some people will use the extra resolution, some will enjoy the extra blur...

Yes, of course, sorry, I was being facetious. People will make their on minds up, after they read the reviews and viewing comparison images (some of which are up already and I linked to)...

Cross posted these from the lens announcement page. Sorry for it being haphazard and non-scientific but we can build on context little by little.

Bokeh looks great. Shot of the doggo has the type of background that can give lenses fits. Ditto the lanterns. Dammit. I'll start saving.

Has anyone done any black and white conversions? CA looks relatively well controlled and contrast/microcontrast seems good. I was planning on also getting the CV 35APO for black and white photography as I’ve always found APO lenses to be better for b &w conversions. The GM looks like it may give good results judging by the full color images.

That's a nice combo .
... I do think there is something wrong with compression though, especially on the 1st image, a lot of blotchiness can be seen on the face of the statue and a bit behind. Are these jpegs from the camera or converted raws?

May be One day I will buy this lens.
Who knows.
But at the moment bokeh is less than impressive to me.

B&W street photography is not exactly my comfort zone, but I tried a shot this afternoon ;-)

Thank you. Let me try uploading again. Was working with the raw image on the phone using Photoshop Express, interestingly, it managed to open the raw file.

Uploaded another version using jpg.

How so? Bokeh looks great to me. No real harsh outlining or onion rings, smooth transition zone, very well controlled CA...

Sony has everyone by the little curlys if we keep running to buy $1400 lenses to take photos of mannequins and overhanging foliage. I get the enthusiasm I think,I’ve been there, I’ve taken meaningless photos with a new lens only to look at it later and go “nobody gives a s**t about a isolated leaf on my porch”. That was the end of such passtimes.
Take a portrait,freeze some action. Give it some thought,look for a moment.....BE a photographer.

I'm not sure I understand your point. Does every photo have to be some sort of striving for HCB or McCurry? Or is someone allowed to enjoy their hobby without wanting to create 'art'? Sometimes you buy a Lambo not to drive fast bu too drive slooow...

Hello, you seem to have referenced a few of my photos. I take plenty of real pictures too. These were honestly just to share what qualities the lens will have with others who don’t have it in hand yet and not meant as art. I take little pleasure in photographing mannequins or foliage. But it does give a sense of bokeh quality, contrast, flare, CA through sunlit trees...it gives me a reference point to know what to expect when taking more purposeful photos later. Trust me: I also do not care about an isolated leaf, among other subjects in the photos. (I’m not going to be looking at it later.)

I used this lens in part for a portrait shoot today, but those might not see the light of day for a while as I edit them. In the meantime, we have at least something in hand to look at. And I don’t see any harm in that, especially given how many people want more information to judge whether this would be a good fit for them or not before it is widely available. Just in case you misinterpret my purpose in posting.

We tested it now for the week-end in a bundle with the A1.

The lens is a must have for us. Fantastic lens, so small, sharp, nice rendering.

Yes, definitely sharper than the Sigma over the frame until f2 and minimally less CAs. The Sigma renders a tiny bit smoother but if I reduce texture/sharpness in LR until both are equally sharp, the difference is negligible.

The Sigma distortion is quite severe, something you have to memorize when shooting in tighter interiors at weddings. The profile correction often crops in quite severely, so you always need to shoot a bit wider. If you consider the Sigma to be clearly narrower than the Sony anyway, you effectively end up with 37-39mm focal length (didn't measure it).

Thank you for this test. It matches my first impressions. The Sigma’s barrel distortion is, indeed, quite severe, and it’s even more noticeable when compared to the GM. I also had the feeling it has a little bit more cat’s eye distortion and "Petzval" effect at f/1.4 than the 35 GM. Anyway, distortion correction is quite heavy on the Sigma, and definitely necessary when it comes to portraits. Added to a narrower FOV (and the difference with the 35 GM is clearly noticeable), this correction effectively leads to a ≥ 37 focal length.

Talking about portraits with the GM - how does it render skin? How is the semi-close-up-performance (1-2 m) and how is the distortion there? Does anybody have some pictures of 1-2 m distant semi to full-size body-shots?

From what I’ve seen so far it renders skin quite nicely (more neutral than other lenses that might add warmth), but I literally have only had it for two days and haven’t dug deep into editing yet. It felt to me like there was much less distortion than I would have expected for a 35 at close range. That being said, I still don’t like to take close-ups with 35s in general because even when distortion is controlled, it is still present to some degree. I would use it for emphasis or effect perhaps but not for a traditional portrait unless it was full body.

Even after saying all that I did take some half body shots at close range due to a confined space, and it did quite well. As soon as I have time to edit a few I will share.
