My unsolicited opinion here.

It's true what you said. But without knowing what's the percentage, probability, easiness, the statement is really not meaningful. It's like saying you can find gold anywhere. Doesn't mean you want to look for gold everywhere. A better lens will improve the likelihood of delivering the pictures you want.

Going with your analogy, we should maybe look into the cases where a good digger digs in the right place but has his tools fail him.

What I see here is bad photos intentionally produced just to make a lens look bad in one way or another. Like a gold digger that intentionally digs in a place without gold, in such a hard rock that will make any pick break. While also complaining that the detector is so bad that it doesn't sense anything.

How about we change the approach. Instead of posting intentionally bad pics, we show some pics that would be otherwise great except that they were ruined by the lens itself. Interesting subject, great composition and lighting, perfect choice of FL aperture, speed and iso. And somehow the pick handle broke and ruined it.

First, my post was mainly in response to your generalization about "any lens". I wouldn't have posted otherwise. While the differences in top end lens is small, I think it's pretty easy to find issues and limitations on low end lens without trying too hard.

Second, for people here who spend bundles on the top end equipment, they are into squeezing out the last bit of difference. And one way to understand the difference is to magnify it. It may very well be insignificant in real usage, but I can't fault them when there is signicant amount of money involved.

Personally, I think that's a great idea.

If the digger can only dig within the roped-off limits of his stake, might he be interested in finding out which tool is better? He has heard there are new tools that might help him much more than the other ones he was using, knowing no better at that tme.

If (by necessity) forced to shoot in poor conditions, a photographer may sympathise with that gold digger. Reviews and comparisons tend to be about finding the limits to the useable scope of a lens, and many can be improved by using the lens for more promising gold prospect sites, true. It's not either/or but both. But review time is limited, and the gold digger's funds are too.

Full sized flickr samples available from Sony Alpha Blog here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/sonyalphablog/with/50942120646/

Somewhere in my post history are the points where he starts posting other recent 35mm options, if anyone was interested in doing in depth comparisons.

I'll be curious to see the real world AF performance compared to the FE35 1.8. Dpreview clocked the GM at .8s to go from minimum to infinity, slower than the sigma and zony, and the FE was fastest at .5s. Not the most robust test, but AF speed is one of my top priorities shooting dogs up close. Hope the GM ends up doing well there, would love to turn my CV 40 and FE35 into 1 GM lens.

That's one of the reasons I remove the meta data when posting images. Too many people get hung up on the gear used and not just view the images for what they are. If asked, I'll pm details, but I want people to just view the image without any gear biases that are established here on FM.

I agree gear bashing happens. as a hobbiest trying to get better at composition, light, etc. I like seeing the metadata on images I like since it helps me understand the selection of Focal length, Aperture, Shutter and ISO. I know the fundamentals of the settings but am always curious especially of low light scenes.

I just exchanged an email with the store I preordered the lens from (not Adorama or B&H), and the Sony sales guy said his Sony rep informed him the current ETA for the lens to ship is April, aligning with what is stated on the B&H website.

Very nice photos. The rendering is quite attractive. Was there much post processing?

The latest news is that the lens will be ready for mass consumption around mid April, unfortuantely.

Thanks ! I tried to keep processing at a reasonable level, so that you can have a realistic insight of the rendering (not neutral, but realistic). As a matter of fact, I also did so because natural rendering was already pleasing... Anyway, sharpness was mostly set to 50 (detail to 1,5) and of course I didn't add clarity nor texture. I also avoided any color saturation (slider stayed at +5 max). I removed quite some shadows on the 2nd and the 5th pictures, but overall I didn't play much with contrast, so that bokeh wouldn't be too much affected. In fact the heaviest processing was locally done on skies, because I didn't use any GND filter that day.

Hope you'll get your copy soon, cause it's really an interesting lens. Optically well balanced, and very versatile.
