p.59 #3 · Pre-order: Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM ($1,399)
It's good to see they want to put out a top quality product. But at the same time it's troubling to think they have "production" concerns literally a week before release. I mean there have to be a crap load of these lenses already in the pipeline. I'm debating about cancelling my order for now. Hmmmm.

Better to think or imagine Sony or their selected reviewers caught an early issue with this lens, than consumers who preordered aka "Beta Testers" wink, wink, find the problem...again
So close to the release date of Feb 14th, sure feels like a potential significant issue. OTOH, maybe Covid supply chain issues are still a major problem?
* The only potential major issue we've seen from reviewers so far is the focus breathing issue. Which may or may not be an issue for photographers, but might be an issue for videographers.
DPR's " What we don't like:"
-Longitudinal chromatic aberration (LoCA) can be an issue
-Lots of focus breathing
-Autofocus not as fast as other options

If it were COVID supply issues it would have been delayed earlier....production for the first batch of orders should be done by now. They're basically days from shipping so its likely there was a quality control issue they encountered in the lenses that they have produced.
Better to delay than have a mass recall of some sort.
That said, things like CA, AF speed, and focus breathing are inherent in the lens design right? I doubt that they are going to scrap the original lens altogether and redesign it.

Seriously considering cancelling my pre-order and going with the Sigma 35/65 combo to pair with my Loxia 21/85 and Nokton 50/1.2. Decisions, decisions - the sigma build and rendering is making this tough.

Having started with the very first Sony A7r and nothing more than a few FE lenses back in the day, I still find it amazing how many truly excellent choices we have for Emount today.

Cancelled my preorder. I have the 35mm f2.8ZA and have been enjoying it for over 2 years and will be fine using it for another few months, as I plan on keeping it once the 35mm f1.4 GM gets here. When Sony works out whatever problems they have with the new lens, then I will reorder in the 2nd batch. But in the meantime I don't want to be a beta tester and maybe go thru a return process.

That sounds like a good plan. I might do the same. Dumb question, how do we know what the second batch will be? I know there are serial numbers but are they put into batches and is that made public?

Why do you assume there is a problem with the lens? Given the pandemic I would think that an issue with parts supply would be at least if not more likely than a problem with the lens.

We don't have a lot of details other than the translated press release, and as I commented earlier, I don't think any of the current GM 35 reviewers identified any show-stoppers, unless the significant focus breathing is a problem for some and as someone else posted, that might require a lens design change which is not likely.
"...we have decided to postpone the release due to production reasons. In addition, the release of the lens hood "ALC-SH164" will be postponed accordingly."
*Interesting that they also mention postponing the lens hood too.

Pretty late in the production process to delay it now.... If there were a supply issue with components, it would have been delayed earlier, but we're days away from launch so the first shipment should have been produced by now.
Usually last step in the process is sampling your lot and testing QC. What likely happened is that the lenses off the line failed QC.

Despite using Sony’s new AF tech, didn’t seem to be blazing, or at least there was/is conflicting reports. I wonder if this has anything to do with it. Or decentering.

I thought about the AF motors comments too. Performance should be optimal based upon the latest tech used, but you are right, some reviews commenting "Autofocus not as fast as other options" -DPR. But then we usually blame the reviewer for not knowing how to use the correct AF settings Ha !

I pre-ordered a copy in my country (France), early in january, and surprisingly I've just been notified it's ready to ship. So for now it doesn't look like a QC problem, at least not a major one (which would require a massive product recall). Could be a simple delay due to pandemic...

This is the news I was hoping to hear. Thanks for posting.
