It's funny because everybody compares the GM to the 35mm 1.2 Sigma which I totally understand.
I never wanded the sigma but I used the 40mm sigma, which I loved. The rendering was described often as "boring", maybe because it is perfect (no fringing, no onions, no cat'seyes...) But I really loved it despite its weight.
I am really looking forward to seeing this GM because from what I see already, it might be closer in rendering to the Sigma 40 than to the Sigma 35 1.2.
Unfortunately I don't have the sigma anymore to compare with when I'll receive the GM
?? I have both the sigma 40mm and 35mm f1.2 and I did a lot of comparison for bokeh between those two. I think it is commonly accepted, at least here, that the 40mm is poor in transitional bokeh and the 35mm 1.2 is much better. It is day and night.
For me, there is no contest whatsoever between the 40mm and 35mm f1.2. The 35mm wins hands down for weight, rendering. 40mm is better I guess in sharpness and more importantly the 40mm has like zero trace of LoCA or any color fringing.
The 35mm f1.2 color fringing is below my threshold but the 40mm rendering is above my threshold for good rendering. I thought it was really quite bad...
For many people who were looking for that "ideal" 35mm, the sigma 35mm f1.2 was THE lens that most of us settled on. But it is heavy. Honestly, I thought Sigma is crazy doing the f1.2. I mean if it was f1.4 and shaved of like 200g, I am sure it will be competitive with the 35mm gm

Rendering and bokeh of ART DN 1.2 are the best I've seen till now and clearly (to my eyes) superior to 40 ART.
Question here is how it compares to 35 GM.
Till now no evidence the GM is better by these parameters in direct comparison.

Well there have actually been some comparisons and the GM looks pretty good to me. I don't think based on the size advantage of the Sigma anyone expected the GM to be as good in comparison as it is. Sigma is a great studio lens but everyday carry it's a no go for me. I'm more interested how the GM compares to my CV 35mm 1.2. Have about 2 weeks till I find out. I have a feeling Ill be keeping both.

We are so different.
For me and for my kind of pictures a MF lens as everyday carry is completely not acceptable.
As MF lenses in general. But this is just me, of course.
I respect everyone opinion and today anyone can choose more than a dozen of options in this focal range.
My point (but it seems it is supported only by me) is that I would like to see some clear evidence of rendering/bokeh compared.
I think I have to wait to test directly this lens then compare by myself.
The alternative to this GM will be the new Sigma DN 35 2.0.
Then I 'll decide if to keep both Sigmas or just the GM.
What catches my eye in that review is the amount of dust that seems to be inside their copy. Dust inside a lens shows up in bokeh balls.
You see the dust, but also all these rows of small dots. As if something went wrong during the production of the aspherical elements. Full res example from their review

I’m going to become bilingual by the time this lens hits my doorstep - this guy tested it outdoors in a few different situations, and I really, really love the overall rendering it puts out. Check out series at 9:15, 22:04, and 31:34. For all I know he is trashing the lens, but I love his images!

I hope not to run into the same situation I did with my 135mm GM. Three copies before dust free. First two copies did not have a few specs of internal dust but a lot of internal dust. Not acceptable to me on any new lens but especially on a 2100.00 GM lens.

can this be a dirty sensor?
I don't think so. I believe a dirty sensor would show spots only in one part of the image, not in every bokeh ball. This part of the review bothered me too. It looks a lot like internal dust. If it is a little circular spot it could be a manufacturing defect in the glass, but it doesn't look like that is what it is there (*Changed my mind, some of it looks like dust and some of it looks like a problem with the glass itself). I feel like I will have to do a thorough job inspecting for dust when the lens arrives with a pinpoint light source.

If you look closely there are multiple horizontal streaks across the whole frame with small dots in them as well. Looks almost like the lens or an element was wiped with something that dried on the element.

I think you may be right. Either way, it makes me uncomfortable to see this in the review! And will prompt more thorough checking when received.
Also I might add that it really does look to be internal, not something that could be fixed by the consumer with a blower or wipe externally.
I'm slightly disappointed by their findings about the AF. What they test is only the speed between MFD and infinity, but their results shows that it's slightly slower than the ZA. Even more surprising, they find that the Sigma 1.2 is even slightly faster than the ZA.
However, MFD to infinity doesn't tell the whole story about AF. I have a preorder on the GM, I will compare it with the ZA as soon as I put my hands on it.
Otherwise, optically speaking, they are just bothered by some loca visible up to f/2. It matches what I saw in the samples availables online.

I'm hoping Sony anticipated the demand for this lens. I found out I'm 5th in line and I actually placed my order the night before pre orders opened. Yikes! They said they have no idea how many they will get in the first wave.
