At the 5:10 minute mark is a test of focusing on 2 different bottles on a table top and focusing between them. Clearly the Sony is faster than Sigma f1.2 (The Zeiss was not tested). The Sigma is slightly slower to transition but also because it back and fronts focuses to get final focus, it is significantly slower overall. Gordon calls the Sony focusing instantaneous. This is much more important than one camera being a 1/10 second slower in going from maximum near to far focus. 1/10 of a second, about the time it takes to speak a single letter out loud. Yet DPR had to mention this as a negative, what nitpicking on their part. My guess is the DPR reviewer has either the Zeiss or Sigma as their own personal lens.
I'm slightly disappointed by their findings about the AF. What they test is only the speed between MFD and infinity, but their results shows that it's slightly slower than the ZA. Even more surprising, they find that the Sigma 1.2 is even slightly faster than the ZA.
However, MFD to infinity doesn't tell the whole story about AF. I have a preorder on the GM, I will compare it with the ZA as soon as I put my hands on it.
Dpreview wrote that the Sigma 35/1.2 has faster AF than the GM but Cameralabs said the complete opposite.
"Compare it to the Sigma 35 1.2, again wide-open, and you’ll notice the Sigma is visibly a little slower, while also hesitating from time to time when driven by this body. Don’t get me wrong, the Sigma’s AF performance is still very usable and would satisfy me in day-to-day use, but the new Sony is definitely quicker." https://www.cameralabs.com/sony-fe-35mm-f1-4-gm-review/
Not sure who is right but the 35/1.4 ZA has very fast AF, so this shouldn't really be a concern for the GM. Perhaps the reviewer is trying hard to find faults. He admits LoCA is better controlled compared to other 35mm lenses, but somehow this ends up being a negative for the GM.

I’m going to become bilingual by the time this lens hits my doorstep - this guy tested it outdoors in a few different situations, and I really, really love the overall rendering it puts out. Check out series at 9:15, 22:04, and 31:34. For all I know he is trashing the lens, but I love his images!

Thank you tbpeur01.
I scrolled the video according to your pointers. At the second one I pressed play too early and at 21:38-21:40 at the right lower corner there is an example of really ugly twigs showing nisen bokeh.
I like the thought of having a very good desirable 35mm lens on the market so that wasn't good. At the same time I can't justify buying the lens at the price it will be sold for here in Sweden anyway. Oh well, dreams...

I cannot believe this. I just sold my last ZA and AF is much faster on it than with the Sigma f1.2.

What catches my eye in that review is the amount of dust that seems to be inside their copy. Dust inside a lens shows up in bokeh balls.
You see the dust, but also all these rows of small dots. As if something went wrong during the production of the aspherical elements. Full res example from their review
In my experience, the dust spots you see in the bokeh balls are frequently on the back surface of the rear element and can be cleaned away. This would also explain the "rows of small dots" you are noticing on the linked image. Those could be nothing more than dried residua from cleaning the rear element with a moist cleaning cloth or tissue.

Can we talk about the ruggedness of this lens? This will be my first GM variant - and paired with an A7III body, how comfortable are you taking this out to a - light rain, medium rain, heavy rain, snow?

I briefly owned the Sigma 1.2 and in my memories, AF was indeed slower. Confirmed by cameralabs, according to Fred. I don't know how dpreview tested that...

Dpreview lens tests are garbage honestly. Not near specific, vigorous or controlled to gleam helpful info IMO.
The ZA 35/1.4 is super quick—paired with an a9 I could shoot dogs and kids at WO in AF-C at 10-20 FPS with an excellent hit rate. It’s only a hair slower than the absolutely blazing 55 ZA.
I have a hard time believing that 35 GM will regress, but we’ll see...

That's possible, but there's no way for us to confirm either since it needs inspecting the lens.
We'll just have to wait and see if there are issues once it gets released. Let's hope not.

could it be body dependent? I went to test my sigma f1.2 with both my a7iii and a9, the speed seems similar in moving from close to far focus. and honestly it is fast enough for all practical subjects for me... no human can cover that distance faster than the lens focusing speed. And it is like sub 1 sec and honestly, I take like 10x more time to frame anyway...
I do "feel" that the hit rate of the A9 is higher on tracking a moving subject vs a7iii. That I feel is far more impt than just raw speed... I mean what we want is accuracy in tracking.

I don't have the 40 anymore but will be comparing it to my CV35mm. I have a feeling I'll be keeping both. You have to always have at least one CV lens, right?

I think that is a deal breaker for me. It is really bad... I mean purple water?
The lens is fairly small, very sharp while still retaining smooth bokeh and has superfast AF.
So I really can't see how this is a deal breaker. Which 35/1.4 does much better in such a difficult lighting situation?

I think my sigma f1.2 don't have so much purple fringing.
Anyway the Lens is in stock and my local shop asked me to collect. There seems to be quite a lot of stock as he said he had 10 pieces and is selling at his usual discount off list price. Usually for Day 0 lens, he sells them at list price as stock is very limited.
I decided not to buy it because of the purple fringing. It is above my threshold and after shooting many many shots with my sigma, I don't think it is that bad. I would have noticed such fringing easily without pixel peeping. It is so obvious even on web sized prints. I literally drove out to the shop and then turned back I think selling away the other lens is too much of a hassle. I suspect I will sell away the gm after comparison so why go all the trouble.
I can tolerate color fringing if they are not visible on web sized prints. I already have the sigma f1.2 which is good in all aspects except weight.
I am in Singapore so I expect Asia pacific countries is getting their lens today

Soooo you see one image on the internet and you draw a conclusion from that? Glad I have never done that. I would have missed out on a ton of great glass.

I might still buy it later but not at day1. Reason is there seems to be plenty of stocks and I only really shoot during vacations... I bought the sigma 85mm f1.4 dg dn last year to replace my sony 85mm f1.8 partly because it looks better on all fronts. But I have not really shot much with it...
I am really brand neutral. I have the 24mm gm and 135mm gm, sigma 14-24mm, 35mm f1.2, 85mm f1.4.
I have went through like 35mm f1.4art, 35mm f1.4 ZA, 40mm f1.4 sigma, and finally settled on the 35mm f1.2 which is really good.
For the the only reason to get the 35mm gm is the weight... but on the assumption its IQ is not much worse.
You think that level of purple fringing is acceptable? or you think dpreview has a lemon? or what?

Wrong person to ask I'm not a fan of DPR. I don't rely on Internet images no matter who posts them really. If it's a focal length/lens I really am interested in I will always buy it and test it out myself. That said my testing is alot different than most here on FM. I take a lens and just go shoot, that's it. I don't get into test charts, diagonal upside down images, 400% pixel peeping, etc... Nothing wrong with those things if that what floats your boat. Just not my thing. If an image looks good to me on my screen and in print that's all that matters to me. Almost anything can be fixed today with software if needed anyway. What I can't fix with software is the size and weight of my equipment. Which is why I moved to Sony in the first place.
