Just comparing the 35/1.4 ZA vs 35/1.4 GM's MTFs, it's interesting that the GM does not suffer from the mid-zone resolution dip that I really disliked from the ZA. The more I look at it, the more I like this new GM.
I’ve never pre-ordered anything ever! However, I’m seriously tempted to do so with this lens.

I watched Camera Labs review last night on YT. I'm a 35mm freak but I think I'll wait on this one. I'm just not sure about the OOF rendering yet. The one thing I'll give to the 35mm 1.4 ZA is that- at least to my eyes- it produces lovely bokeh. I don't really care that it's soft wide open.
I'll make my decision after the 40 pages or so of Fredmiranda pics show up. I mean, I can be persuaded

I bit the bullet on this lens as it is my most used focal length and I am tired of so many compromises with other lenses (bokeh, CA, size/weight, AF...). Should get it on the 12th or 13th of this month...can't wait! Even if it's not 100% perfect in every aspect, I think it will be a huge upgrade.

Unlike many it seems, I am most curious to compare the new GM 35 to the Sigma 35i.
I actually really liked the draw of the Za 35 and think it was a great optic when I had it, I know around here doesn’t get much love here. But all the AF 35/1.4 options are too large for my taste. This GM is compact enough that I’d actually use it regularly. So now it’s just how much more if offers in terms of rendering over the Sigma.

When you walk in to order the 35mm GM but end up buying a 135mm GM instead. Lol. One of the very few lenses I regretted selling was my previous 135mm GM. The 35mm will come but for me it will be later on.
Don’t try the 100 STF, then - it’s a specialized lens, but what it does, it does very well. Not a replacement for the 135 GM, but it can create special images in a very unique way.

I really like where Sony is taking the GM line starting with the 135mm, 24mm, and this new 35mm. They seem to have made popular engineering trade-offs regarding price, size, weight, sharpness, rendering, AF performance, and correction. Unlike the original GM products Sony now seems more focused in how they want to position this brand similar to Sigma's Art line. I can't wait for the 50mm 1.4 GM and 85mm 1.4 GM mkII.
I LOVE the rendering of the Zeiss Sony 50 1.4 ZA. If they can improve the focus speed, increase sharpness (although it’s plenty sharp), control the CA and keep it’s character I’ll be very happy.

I think the biggest factor driving those comparisons are the timing and size. We've had what feels like a dozen almost great options for a long time leading up to the release of both of these options and I think the general view on both these lenses is that we've finally arrived at "great". As for size, well... Sony really surprised everyone with how compact and light they managed to make the new GM. So much so that many who have been waiting for a great, everyday standard-wide now have two options to choose from at once instead of just one.

Yea not sure I wanna pre order either. Well I just hope we won't be having bad first copies like we did with the 12-24 GM but then again it's a zoom so not sure. I think I might wait and not pre order either for a bit. Really hope QC isn't crap with this release. I might get it from my local store too just in case I get a bad copy to exchange easily.

Looking forward to your shots @abadger and @hodie! I am pretty sure I will eventually get this one after Covid in LA. Can’t get that close to anyone but my wife and my dog with a 35 with how things are here right now. I am thinking this is probably the the one to replace my Samyang 35 1.4, which takes amazing shots but misses focus more than my other lenses. I just haven’t been really convinced that the alternatives (with an exception to the Sigma 1.2) would give me better let alone equal portrait shots, albeit with more reliable AF. I’m just not crazy about the size of the 35 1.2 because there’s no way I could ever one hand it with a reflector in my left hand, which is not that uncommon for me.

I’ll be sure to share! Yes the Sigma produces great images but I dread lugging it around for street in particular. The weight of this one is within reason as it’s similar to my Samyang 85 and that’s no biggie for weight when walking about. This one hits every one of my needs so I’m hoping it’s a winner. I’ve got to believe it is going to be similar to the 24GM, which if it is, will be more than enough to be satisfied with the upgrade (plus updated AF!).
When things improve, look forward to your shots as well! In the meantime you are pretty lucky to have a great model to shoot and get creative with.

Looks amazing! I’m sure you will get some awesome stuff with it! I’m certainly very fortunate to have a wife that likes doing portraits and is enthusiastic about futzing around with gels and occasionally re-shooting things haha. Definitely not complaining!
I am pretty happy with a 35/50/85 combo in a Peak Design 10L. I am always thinking about going wider or longer but I just don’t know that I need them for the way i shoot, plus I have a little CV 15 I got on the forum here for really wide anyway. I’m a big fan of the 10L for a 3 lens kit and my one experience with Peak Design service was an 11/10. I would probably need a different bag with any lenses that are substantially larger. My Sigma 50 Art is about as big as I think I can fit in there.

It's funny because everybody compares the GM to the 35mm 1.2 Sigma which I totally understand.
I never wanded the sigma but I used the 40mm sigma, which I loved. The rendering was described often as "boring", maybe because it is perfect (no fringing, no onions, no cat'seyes...) But I really loved it despite its weight.
I am really looking forward to seeing this GM because from what I see already, it might be closer in rendering to the Sigma 40 than to the Sigma 35 1.2.
Unfortunately I don't have the sigma anymore to compare with when I'll receive the GM

I haven’t noticed these almost great options
Some of them I like, but mid speed 35mm land, native or adapted, is just a pick of compromises game to me. I am partial to the Pentax 31 and CV 35/1.2iii but neither is too close to the RX1 as an all-rounder. The 35i is closest. I agree, I think we have “arrived” assuming the GM 35 is as good as I hope/think/it looks.

35i is as close as you can get to the Rx1 at this point. I'm very happy with it...legitimately compact, competently sharp, and renders beautifully. It's earned its keep in my bag. To keep things compact, you previously had to compromise on rendering, AF, or get an rx1 lol. That is not longer the case.
I do have the 35GM on pre-order, but not as an alternative to the 35i. 35GM is small for an f1.4 lens, but I don't consider it compact compared to the likes of the 35i. It's more an alternative to the Bigma 35 1.2.
I'm interested in seeing how the rendering stacks up to my Bigma 35 1.2. It looks as if the GM is sharper, but the Bigma sets a high standard for rendering and that's the priority for me for a fast aperture prime.

I actually thought about getting the Sigma 40 because I’m probably going to consolidate into one system with Sony. My 35 of choice right now is the APO Summicron-SL on the SL2/SL2-S. It’s pretty much perfect, optically speaking - for black and white it’s easily one of my favorite lenses that I’ve used. The Sigma 40 may render similarly from what I’ve seen.
I have a 35 GM on preorder and will compare it stopped down to f2 with the APO Summicron-SL. Again, it seems that it may give the APO Summicron a run for it’s money in sharpness and “perfection.”
