p.26 #1 · Pre-order: Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM ($1,399)
Super surprised at the price - I thought it would be somewhere between the 24 and 85. It looks like a fabulous lens. I really like 35mm and the 1.8 has been great, but I prefer the GM design with the aperture ring. As it stands, the 24GM is probably my favorite lens, but for things like cars and food its a little too wide so I go 35. Now I have to decide to run a 24/35GM combo or space it out a bit with maybe the 20G and 35GM and selling the 24GM and 35/1.8. 24/35/85 has been my recent prime lineup and its working well, but the 20 might gap better. Tough call since I always carry a fast wide and the 24 has been stellar. Hmmm...

35/1.8 has a place with half the weight, 280 grams. New GM is not exactly lightweight.
Max magnification in manual focussing mode is .26x
This time Sony’s press release also touts a ‘linear MF ring’.

It is a tough call. I ended up selling my 24gm in anticipation of getting this lens when rumors started. As I figured the B&S board might see a bunch of them. I must say the extra 4mm on the 20mm gaps much better especially on the Riv for me. It's a really nice lens. I know it's only a "G" but they could have put the GM on it. The 1.8 is really the only difference. Between the 20mm, this 35GM, and my Samyang 75mm I'm pretty much set now for a prime kit.

$1400 is definitely surprising. 35 is probably my most used focal length, but right now I have the Samyang 35 which works okay. I'd love both this and the 24 GM but I couldn't justify both. Certainly a lot to think about

Optical design and MTF results comparing the FE 24/1.4 GM to the new 35/1.4 GM. The latter performs noticeably better at infinity, especially towards the corners. The new 35/1.4 GM has an extra element.

BTW: From the samples on the Sony site (and video footage), rendering looks smooth and reminiscent of the 24/1.4 GM's. So far, great news for those expecting them to render similarly.

I would have to move the CV40 out of my bag for this. Ease of use vs one of my fav lenses.
GRRRR
Yep, this is where I'm at too...price and the fact that I have a Tamron 28-75 I need to get listed (just don't use zooms much) would make it an easy switch $$-wise, and I could still keep the 24 GM. But the CV 40 is so nice for landscapes...

I just saw this and I’m catching up with the thread. I thought the rendering was pretty smooth too in that, and lens tip said the coma correction is spectacular. It very much seems like it’s a 24 GM clone, which is perfect.

I wonder what the deal is Sony has with Zeiss. It's interesting Sony has chosen not to reduce the price of the Zeiss 35mm 1.4 (at least here in states). Reading between the lines is that them sticking it too Zeiss for some reason? Just seems odd. I'm struggling to come up with another answer other than Zeiss gets a percentage of every lens sale. Maybe Sony went to Zeiss to modify the agreement and they said "no". So Sony said "OK" here is your cut of nothing now?

Quite amazing small size and low weight for a 35mm f/1.4 AF lens with this level of IQ.
79 g heavier than the Sony 24/1.4 GM
243 g heavier than the Sony 35/1.8
137 g heavier than the Voigtlander 35/1.2 III SE (MF)
106 g lighter than the Sony 35/1.4 ZA
566 g lighter than the Sigma 35/1.2 Art
Yeah it feels like Sony are finally producing the lens series I wanted them to make, modern sharp AF glass that balances well on a lightweight camera. I can deal with CA/fringing in post if it's ever a problem, so I'd much rather have a 524g f/1.4 lens that's always in my bag than a 1080g f/1.2 lens that spends almost all of its time at home...
