It has the sharpness of the Sigma Art, the bokeh of the Tamron SP, and the CA of the ZA. lol

That flare resistance dough.

Looks pretty much perfect for the size.

Looks nice, however, I only see size + weight as advantages over the Sigma f1.2 so far, which is likely cheaper, too. The Sigma is already equipped with fast AF and survived quite a beating over time we use it, so wrt sealing it should be fine, too. I have to admit, I expected a bit better CA-control.

I don't get why some are complaining about CA. I am very sensitive to CA but what I am seeing in the images is actually a very strong performance for a fast 35mm. I don't know of any other 35mm AF lens that performs significantly better.
Were you seriously expecting APO performance??

In terms of rendering this new 35 GM looks much better than the Sony 35mm F1.8.

Rendering-wise I'll have to see Fred's test to make up my mind , but I also don't understasnd the CA and PF complaints. It looks visibly better than 24GM to me.

From the press text - “ weighing a mere 524 grams and measuring just 76 mm dia. x 96 mm with a filter diameter of Φ67mm”

As a comparison the GM24 is 75.4 x 92.4 and weighs 445g. So the 35 is 3.6mm longer and essentially the same width. Nice!

Sorry, but that's pure marketing talk.
When I saw the size, I knew it will not be optically perfect (nor 24GM neither 85GM is) and there will be some compromises. I like what I'm seeing so far, but it's not Sigma 40mm correction level for sure.

GM 24mm f/1.4: 445g, 75.4mm dia x 92.4mm length
GM 35mm f/1.4: 524g, 76mm dia x 96mm length

w.r.t. size and weight, they did it!

So I saw at least one other member talking about using it for astro stitches who else other than him and I are in that camp? Also depending on flare resistance and sunstars this might make for a nice new landscape/astro lens

The press text says it has “two of Sony’s XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors” - is that the same as my 135GM or is this different?

Edit - the Sony website says the 135 has “dual front and rear XD linear motors” - does that mean the 135 has 4 motors? And the 35 has the same motors but 2 of them?

Yeah, but one ED element isn't going to get rid of all CA. Notice even in this marketing speak they say "suppress" CA. I am sure the ED element suppresses CA, but even the Otus 28 with 8 ED/APD elements and at 1350g does not completely eliminate axial CA at f/1.4. I don't think it is reasonable to expect a lens of this size to eliminate axial CA. It should have less than the 35 f/1.8 (which has no ED elements) at the same apertures, but there is going to be some axial CA. What I am most interested in is how much lateral CA there is once you get a good profile correction. Of course we don't have that yet. If lateral CA is well controlled with a good profile (as I expect it to be), then I can live with some axial CA as long as it is pretty well controlled by f/2.8 (axial CA should decrease as the lens is stopped down; lateral CA will not). To me that is the reasonable expectation for a lens such as this one (i.e., a small 35 f/1.4).

Based on the photos from DPR, my personal feeling is 35GM is not as great as 20/1.8g.
I guess there might be a 35 1.2 GM plannedn in next 1-2 years.

"only see size + weight as advantages" Then Sony has listened and has done their homework Alot of people don't want to carry around a 70-200mm size 35mm.

I don't see a big difference in rendering to the Sigma so far. Won't likely trade in the f1.2 for it even though it is smaller.

CAs:

Stronger CA than 20G, for example.

CA reminiscent to the first GM 24 sample images I saw. Ex. tree branches in the Muir Woods 24GM gallery ( Looking for those samples now)

What makes you assume all "engineering" people want to make a large lens? I would think the opposite is true. If I'm a lens designer there is no satisfaction in making something large like everyone else. I mean really how hard is it to make a perfect lens when size is not taken into account. People here said it would not be smaller than the Zeiss for example. If I'm an engineer that is what drives me, not marketing. Common sense just tells us smaller "if possible" is more useful. 35mm 1.2 Sigma can produce beautiful images but it never

If you read what Nikon people are saying about their Z lenses (a lot are bigger than the equivalent Sony), they seem to be happy that Nikon chose to make sharp and well corrected optics with size/weight are secondary.

That is for the f/2.8 zooms. Note Nikon made a big compromise for almost all their initial primes in making them f/1.8 which kept them small. Nikon users are applauding that decision as well.

I've got a stellar copy of the 35/1.4 ZA. I'll reserve judgement, but looking at the 35 GM samples so far, I'm not seeing a compelling enough of a reason to upgrade. I'd be more tempted to go for the Sigma 1.2, which is a more noticeable step-up in performance.

Those f/1.8 are big for the f/1.8 class. They are sharp and well corrected though. That behemoth 50/1.2 S is no slouch either .
