DPReview? More like SAReview amirite?
Bad jokes aside, not sure bokeh/rendering devotees are getting everything they want here. Seems to be a lack of double structures inside out of focus regions but at the same time it doesn't seem to have that 20 G/24 GM/35 Sonnar/85 GM trick where SA creeps juuuuuuuust to the absolute edges of the plane of focus to give that extra smooth feel to an image. Still, this looks superb. I might rather have this performance in a 1.8 G 28/35/40mm with a better MFD, but at the size I really can't complain. Gonna start saving for this as soon as the COVID based recession eases back a bit and I can actually get work again... assuming the weight is as it appears to be.

Onion rings are gone now, that is for sure. But other than that I do not see much improvement over the old 35 1.4 ZA in terms if OOF rendering. There seems to be some outlining, making the bokeh sometimes a bit too contrasty for my taste. We'll see. As said before, If the weight is around 500g, I could live with somewhat less smooth OOF rendering, if there is better sharpness (and less SA glow) at F1.4 (compared to the ZA).

That certainly doesn't rock my socks off. Then again DPReview's pictures are often lackluster, so I don't think it's enough to pass judgement on just yet.

True, they went for maximum sharpness @ F1.4 but I still think it looks pretty smooth overall. So far I like what I'm seeing.
I much prefer a small and light lens like this than hauling around that Sigma 1.2 beast, even if it has more CA in some situations.
Also: from my testing the GM lenses (apart from the 85GM) always have better, more reliable AF than the Sigma DG DN lenses. Most noticeable in AF-C.

Agreed. Need to get some proper samples to see what its really about. I dont see it rubbing shoulders with the Sigma 1.2 but the size is nice :-) I guess we will find out the real story in a few hours...

First examples are always first examples and people tend to observe them more obsessed (and compare them to their usually high expectations). Still I have to say I'm a bit surprised about the rather strong CA (wide open) and LoCA even stopped down to f/2. To me, this doesn't seem too different from the ZA version, though the onions are surely gone. The rendering looks smooth, though technically it doesn't look too too different from the ZA (let alone Otus-like performance). I think one of the main pro's is that it is pretty compact for a f/1.4 lens (remember the ZA has 72mm filter thread) and it aligns with the rest of the GM family.
I'm pretty sure first impressions will settle for more comprehensive understanding when we get more samples and discussion advances.

Yeah it’s early days yet but I have some suspicion that marketing told engineering “people loved the 24GM for its size...make it that size” and engineering said “you do know this is a 35? Made to the same standard it could be up to 50% longer” and marketing said “what evs”
Having said that, for some people a sharp AF 1,4/35 which is that size may be worth the trade off of very high LoCA by modern standards.
EDIT: while worst LoCA in some of the DPR samples seemed terrible, other reviews and samples are looking much better, so maybe something was wrong with the sample, or it’s just a very rare combination of factors that provoke it.

There are some comments in the Dpreview gallery that there is a lot less CA when opening the raw-files in Capture One. So there could be a issue with Adobe profile for this lens that it doesn't suppress the CA enough (like it does in other Sony lenses) or exaggerates it. Comments about the Capture One behaviour tells me that there is something wrong here and these first samples might lead to wrong impressions, or at least to a situation where we not seeing the whole picture yet. In short, people should hold their horses a bit. Let see what the early reviews look like - after all they should be here tomorrow I guess..

I don't get why some are complaining about CA. I am very sensitive to CA but what I am seeing in the images is actually a very strong performance for a fast 35mm. I don't know of any other 35mm AF lens that performs significantly better.
Were you seriously expecting APO performance??
In terms of rendering this new 35 GM looks much better than the Sony 35mm F1.8.

Agree. This is par for the course here on FM though, paralysis by analysis

What makes you assume all "engineering" people want to make a large lens? I would think the opposite is true. If I'm a lens designer there is no satisfaction in making something large like everyone else. I mean really how hard is it to make a perfect lens when size is not taken into account. People here said it would not be smaller than the Zeiss for example. If I'm an engineer that is what drives me, not marketing. Common sense just tells us smaller "if possible" is more useful. 35mm 1.2 Sigma can produce beautiful images but it never even crossed my mind to buy it because it's way to big. What good is a great optic if you don't want to carry it? Obviously that answer is different for everyone. But I suspect most that moved to the mirrorless world would prefer the smaller lens.

Leaked Sony text from Philippines at SAR says availability in February, boasts of SA control (so maybe wait to see what correct PP does), sharpness, rendering, autofocus speed, size.
I like the look of this thing a lot. It seems like a complementary image palette to the harder, documentary style of the 35/1.8. I could see wanting to have both lenses.

Indeed, it looks a little bit better on the f/1.4 samples when I open the raw files in C1. But count me in the camp of the people who were expecting maybe a liiiiittle bit less Loca. But we shouldn't forget that these 1.4 shots are torture tests :
f/1.4
long distance
water and metal
60mpx
But I don't care, I will buy it anyway. The ZA is my main lenses for wedding. It still has by today's standards a good AF (the best of the availables 35 1.4 for Sony anyway), but if this one is sharper and has a better AF, and I'm sure it will, it will be my future main lens.
