UPDATE- SOLVED: Per Joe Tomasone, I purchased a higher output PD battery, a RavPower 20000mAh 60W PD and it will power the camera (without a battery grip) fine. Note is must be PD and deliver over 35W (I ran some tests that show 20 watts but not confirmed). I got 20/fps in electronic shutter (did not use mechanical or 1st curt)... I shot lightly for seven hours and the battery showed one light out of four dark. I view this issue as solved. All you need is the high output PD battery and a USB cable (included with battery). The lower output Anker I noted below still works well but as a charger only and you can charge in between shooting... but get the higher power unit and be done with this issue for good... and for only $50... less than the price of a Canon NH battery.

RavPower 20000mah, 60W PD battery:

https://www.amazon.com/Portable-RAVPower-20000mAh-High-Capacity-Compatible/dp/B082PGS78L/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=60w+usb+battery&qid=1606412052&sr=8-2

60 w PD Charger to charge the battery, it charges up the battery from 50% in like 1 hour… amazing :

https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-5-Port-Charger-Ports-Delivery/dp/B07PBCKZZ4/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=amazon+basic+charger+5+port&qid=1606412154&sr=8-2

The two biggest makers of these batteries are RavPower and Anker… both are good.

UPDATE:

SSO-Images and I are using the RAVPower unit noted above.

Both JoeTomasone and Atlasman2, are running their R5s using an Anker PowerCore+ 26800mAh PD 45W with 60W PD Charger bundle (their posts are in this thread).

------------------------------------

Issue: I am unsatisfied with this R5's battery life. Sorry, no way around saying it, for me, it sucks.. so...

Questions:

1) Will Canon's DR-6 dummy battery coupler present itself as an NH battery and give you GREEN H+ shooting?
2) Anyone know of alternative DR-6 dummy battery coupler that presents itself as an NH battery?

For 2 above, I tested a Gonine alternative with an Anker battery and it runs the camera for basic shooting but not giving GREEN H+ shutter speeds. I found an alternative on Ali-Express that claims to be NH but.. I am not wasting my cash to test that one.

The Canon DR-6 is currently out of stock where I looked.

I am shooting birds in flight for the most part with a tripod. Here are my lessons learned and some questions for others. Maybe you can post your lessons etc. so this thread can be of service to those just acquiring their new R5 (and I suspect R6).

Dealing with Batteries Only

The following is unacceptable to me, but what I was doing: Just using batteries, it appears you are stuck with either buying a bag of batteries and or setting you camera to continually shut down to conserve battery life. My settings:
- Display 30 sec
- View Finder 3 min
- Auto Power 10 min
The problems with this approach are three, 1) Canon batteries are expensive, 2) the camera is a bit slow to wake.. it appears to me to wake in two stages, the first is the sensor/viewer becomes active, then the focus system comes on line. I have lost shots when the camera was asleep (not Auto Power off) and a bird burst into view, and 3) Older Canon batteries may or may not give you GREEN H+ shutter speeds.

Use of non-LP-E6NH Batteries

I only tested using Canon batteries. I tested using the supplied LP-E6NH, a LP-E6N (old), and a LP-E6 (real old). All batteries had a full charge and are very usable. They all operated the R5 fine for basic shooting.

Summary:
- Using Mechanical Shutter, NH and N gave me GREEN H+, the E6 did not.
- Only the NH would charge in camera.

In the Field Battery Charging

This can be done in two different ways, charging a 2nd battery off camera using a charger powered by a big battery or charging one battery inside the R5 using a big battery that has Power Delivery (PD) protocol. I chose the latter, to charge the battery right inside my camera while shooting. It works but has issues. See pic below for how I configured my camera, tripod, and battery.
Parts:
- Anker 20000 Essential PD w/supplied USB C-C cord $50 (a 10000 model will work well and is cheaper)
- Strain support thingy supplied with your R5
- Long Velcro straps

I left the battery plugged in the whole day while shooting. No issues at all. The camera will not use the external battery for operation via the USB C port, only for charging... it is either operation or charging, not both. The camera will charge from two different states:
1 - Power switch off - turn the camera switch to OFF, and green lamp lights and the battery charges
2 - Auto Power Off - with your camera switch to ON, when the camera auto powers off, the green lamp lights and the battery charges. It will not charge with just your Display and or View Finder timing out.

This can work well depending on how ready your camera needs to be... with some dead time, this work very well. If your camera needs to be at the ready all the time, this will not work.

Charge vs Discharge timing: It appears ... not real sure... that the battery discharges at a bout the same rate as charging... maybe. I ran some tests and using the Anker battery, I charged it undisturbed in camera for 1/2 hour and it charged: 69% to 89% in 1/2 hour.

How much was drained from my Anker 20000 PD battery after being plugged into the R5 for about 7 hours? Like nothing... seriously, the thing still showed full power. So.. the 20000 model is overkill; they make a cheaper 10000 PD unit that I am sure is fine.

What does Canon say about Power Delivery compliance? I don't know. Canon would not say when I contacted Canon Support Services. The Canon USB Power Adapter part number is PD-E1... so it appears... appears.. to be a PD compliant interface. If so, and I believe it is, any PD battery can be plugged into this port.

Using a DC, Dummy Battery Coupler

Now in the field, using a DC Coupler will require it to be attached to a battery. I purchased, for testing, a Gonine ACK-E6 coupler from Amazon for $29. This consists of two items, a dummy battery for the insertion into the R5, and a coupler. The side of the coupler that attaches to a battery via USB C-C is Power Delivery compliant. So it is a perfect marriage to my Anker battery. The other side outputs 8.4 volts. I measured its output and it was spot on to what it specified. I measured the output of my fresh, fully-charged LP-E6NH and it output 8.3 volts (it is spec'd for 7.2v) so I am comfortable using this Gonine unit given it is only .1 volt off from a Canon product.

Not shown in the picture below, I used the Gonine setup out in the field. It powers the camera totally fine, but does not allow for GREEN H+. When I checked the battery information in the menu, it showed the battery to be a LP-E6.

Summary, this particular setup is not acceptable to me as I want the fast shutter. Maybe the Canon coupler will work?

What Does Canon Say?

I contacted support at Canon Professional Services twice.... in short, they do not support any product that is not Canon and would not comment on using a battery to power or charge the camera. They noted there are too many different products out there and they can't test them all.

There is some confusion, however, in that the support person and R5 manual denotes the Canon Coupler DR-6 will work on the R5. Neither B&H nor Canon Direct shows the R5 as supported by the DR-6 (I let the rep know this omission).

Canon does not sell an external battery solution via the coupler, only AC and car battery/cigarette lighter.

Now of course, you can present to Canon's DR-6 any power source that meets the requirements for input and a battery with a proper delivery circuit can do that, and of course, you will need the correct plug. What is a mystery to me, is will the DR-6 dummy battery present itself as an NH battery and give you GREEN H+. Anyone know this?

Some additional information for the curious... I tested the output those three batteries with fresh, full charges. They are spec'd for 7.2 volts but all output way more.
- LP-E6 8.18v Approx 8 years old
- LP-E6N 8.05v Approx 4 years old
- LP- E6NH 8.3v new
- LP- E6NH 7.67v w/59% charge

Oh, and this new Power Delivery standard is appearing to grow so you most likely will be buying a PD AC-to-battery charger in your future. To charge the Anker the fasted and safest way is to use a PD charger. I purchased an Amazon Basics 5-port PD charger for $27.

Peace
Bruce in Philly

Charging straight from a PD battery to the R5.. the lower output Anker battery works as a charger only and only with switch OFF or when camera auto-powers off. With the higher output RavPower battery, the camera works straight off of the external battery and does not touch the internal battery... and will run forever! Anker and RavPower are the leaders in these batteries and both make high powered units.

http://www.travelthroughpictures.com/bdd/photostuff/Charge1.jpg

Anker PD battery and Gonine coupler.. will work fine for normal shooting but won't give H+ shutter.

http://www.travelthroughpictures.com/bdd/photostuff/Charge2.jpg

Gonine coupler outputs 8.4 volts exactly as spec'd by Gonine, I tested my fully charged LP-E6NH R5 Battery and it output 8.3 volts.

Out of curiosity, how many shots were you getting per battery? I'm considering an upgrade to R5 or R6, and this worried me. I rented an R6 for a few days and managed to get 800-1000shots, which seemed way more than advertised. I'm sure the R5 is more power hungry though. And both are more power hungry than my 5D3 by far.

Thanks Bruce for the detailed report, I would be interested in the answer to your question about the Canon the DC coupler as well.

I spent the better part of 12hrs in the field shooting wildlife, hand holding R5 w/ 600mm f/4 III lens. I was getting about 600 shots per/battery. Changing batteries was not an issue and with the R5 I am only using Canon OEM LP-E6NH batteries.

I turned off image review as I felt is was unessarry when I can just hit the review button as needed vs after every frame have the image displayed on the rear screen. If I shoot from my tripod/gimbal I will use the battery grip with two OEM batteries which helps balance the rig and will obviously extend the time betwee battery exchanges. Unfortunately with the advancement of the technology comes a hit in power consumption. I do like the ability to plug in a USB C cable connected to the 110v car outlet to top off or charge a camera without removing the battery. This is very convienet when going from location to location throughout the day if your driving.

Brian: Sorry I did not do a shutter count.... I don't think I shot all that much. I think there is more going on to battery life than just shutter. I was out at a favorite eagle spot for about 6 hours and my battery died when I was leaving. With Canon 600mm II and 1.4X III, my shooting was almost always continuous bursts... followed by some picture review (spiced with disappointment.. a talent issue!).... then alot of standing around. When an eagle is hunting, soaring in circles, I keep the camera on him, shutter half depressed, constantly tracking. I suspect this really burns up the juice. I also spend time tracking seagulls for practice. Again, I think this constant half-shutter, tracking/focusing on this big lens really burns up batteries.

I had in my bag, three old Canon batteries if I needed them. I just don't like worrying about battery life and I don't like my camera going to sleep and then missing a fantastic shot as it wakes up. So just having more batteries is not what I want... or I guess I could spend a few hundred on batteries... I want full continuous power... and you can get that with that big Anker battery and a proper coupler.

Keith noted there are configuration options to extend battery life... there are other threads on that... but again, why dick around with dealing with a power management issue? "Captain, the batteries can't take it any more, she's gonna blow!". Stuff it Scottie, I am getting a non-Canon big-battery solution and live large shooting it all on Risa.

Peace

I have a slightly different experience with batteries in the R5. Was doing wild life and birds on safari. I used the high capacity new Canon battery, The older LP n6 (from 7D M2 and 5D M4) and a Hahnel high capacity battery. I used the 600 F4 Series 2 with or without 1.4 converter and the 100-400 series 2. Screen on camera used, camera in Econo.

On all batteries at least 1200 shots per charge. On all batteries, high speed until plus minus 60% capacity. No problem with the generic battery, no funny messages. Did not use a grip. I also got a Hahnel Usb charger-charges from any Usb port, takes 2 batteries and charged all 3 types I am using. Charging the camera from a car 12 volt cigarette point via the Usb c cable requires a high output charger, not the normal cell phone charger.

On safari I use an inverter in my vehicle for the 220 Volt Canon charger or a portable 12 volt battery and the Usb charger. Direct charging of the camera via Usb C where we are on game drives not possible, off road, bad roads.

There is a thread on DPReview about using PD batteries as a power source. https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/64528976

It looks like the battery needs a minimum of 3A at 9V and 5V. Some do not provide this. No mention in the thread if green H+ is achievable but otherwise people are having success.

Thanx Ted.... that thread is very very confusing....I read through that before. That guy must be using a battery grip with a USB C PD battery. The camera operates differently with the grip than without. If he does not have a grip, then he is saying the same thing I am but with more exuberance and that is not quite accurate.

First, I do not have a grip. I did not say in my post, but I am trying to do this without buying everything in the Canon catalog. Having just the big Anker battery and no grip, as I note above, yes you can shoot all day... but it is not the best solution as the camera only charges during power off or auto-power off... you still have to do some management tasks.

From my manual, on page 857, it denotes that with a grip and a USB C charger, the camera will automatically trip back and forth between battery and charging. "Charging stops if you operate the camera." This is not true without the grip.

Without the grip, the camera operates as I denoted in my post.... it charges only with the power switch off, or if the camera auto-offs itself. If it auto-offs, the green charging light will pop on, and if you half press the shutter, the camera awakes, the green charging light shuts off, and you are in operations mode. You can not power the camera directly from the USB C port (unless you have a grip, then the manual denotes you can).

What I like about a dummy battery coupler, where I want to go, is that the camera just runs all the time. Cost is only an Anker battery and coupler.... for about the cost of one new Canon LP-E6NH battery. No charging because it has a full "battery" all the time. You just need a big Anker PD battery that can deliver and that Anker I noted in my post will do that... apparently all and day and more.

Peace

Update:

Just for laughs, I ran a shutter speed test, one with my Canon LP-E6NH battery, and the other with the Gonine ACK-E6 coupler powed by the Anker battery. As I noted above, the R5 recognizes the Gonine dummy battery as an old-stype LP-E6 battery and will not give me a GREEN H+ but a flashing WHITE H+.

So, mechanical shutter, continuous H+ with a Canon 600mm II lens (no tele):

- Gonine Coupler: 7 fps
- Canon LP-E6NH: 10 fps

Anyone with that Canon coupler... just plug it in, select mechanical shutter, H+ and let us know if you get a green H+ or a flashing white H+. Thanx!!!

Are you certain you had a green H+ icon in MS with the Hahnei battery. Every aftermarket battery I've tried gives flashing white icon immediately.

I've found I don't get through more than 2 batteries in a full day of shooting. I have the grip, so two in the grip serves me well.

Just in case I do run through two full batteries (or if I'm desperate for 12FPS MS and run both down to 40%) I also will bring along my Anker PD battery and my RaVPower 2 slot, USB battery charger. I can always just throw a dead battery onto the charger in my bag and it charges while I shoot with one of my spares.

My current issue is all I have is one LP-E6NH and three 3rd part LP-E6 batteries. So I only have 60% battery to work with to keep 12FPS in MS. Another oddity is that even having the single LP-E6NH in the battery grip, the icon goes solid white for only 9FPS. I have to run the NH in the camera itself to get Green H+ 12FPS. I have two NH batteries on order and once I have those then I will have a satisfactory setup that will allow me to keep 12FPS for most, if not all, of a day of shooting. Of course a lot of the time now I'm just shooting 20FPS ES so none of the MS FPS stuff really matters anyways.

Update:

I just ran the Gonine direct to the big Amazon Basics AC PD wall charger... skipped the Anker battery. No improvement, still sees and "old" battery and gives me the white flashing H+

I really wonder what the heck the R5 is looking for to trigger the GREEN H+. The coupler Canon sells for the R5 is the old type... That is why I really would like for someone who has this coupler to let us know what the R5 sees.

Tuesday, if we don't have an answer, I am going to stop over at a camera store and see what they have for sale.

Hi Bruce

I have tested the R5 with a Canon AC-E6 AC adaptor and DC Coupler DR-E6, and have confirmed I get H+ on mechanical shutter.

I tried the Fotga NP-F970 to LP-E6 Dummy Battery Power Adapter Mount Plate with Hot Shoe for Canon EOS 5D2 5D3 5D4 6D 6D2 7D 7D2 60D 70D 80D DSLR Camera and Sony NP-F NP-F970 F960 F770 Battery that I purchased from Amazon, and it does not give the H+ option.

Hope this helps.

Wow, great responses!

Has anyone used the Canon DR-E6 coupler with a PD Battery setup?

You would need to go from the Canon DR-E6 dummy battery coupler to another electrical thingy (1/2 of the Gonine setup I have, see the green light in the pic above) and then to a PD battery.

So good news, what I am going to do is try and find a real Canon DR-E6 coupler dummy battery and connect it to my Gonine/Anker setup. I suspect... only suspect... this will work as I think the Camera is looking for some coding in the dummy battery. I doubt it is the juice.

Note, the Gonine is really two components... 1) the dummy battery, and 2) an electronics "thingy" that talks PD to a PD battery one side, and provides the Canon-specific juice requirements to a dummy battery on the other.

I did the dummy battery, not for me. Use two batteries and put them in a usb double battery charger. Already have 5 or more. Most power banks work to charge many camera batteries on location.

Update.... did a day of shooting..8 total hours away from electricity... and learned a few things. I had my Anker battery attached directly to the camera's USB port via a C-C USB cable all day.

After some experimentation, I came to the conclusion that the least I think about power management, the happier I am. So.... In Power saving menu, I changed Auto Power Off to 3 min.

This forces the camera into charging soon. If I want to keep the camera alive, I pump the shutter. I also found there is little time difference waking the camera up from a full power off compared to just the viewfinder and display screen being off.... so why not have it charge if it is half asleep anyway?

So... I want to force the camera in to charging mode early. With this configuration, I left the day with 92% of charge on my battery. During the day, when things got hot with the birds, my battery dropped to a low of about 62%. When I got home, my big Anker still showed four out of four lights lit... it barely nicked the potential in this monster battery.

A kind of obvious lesson learned here.... this configuration of battery to camera and constant sleep only works if you don't have to be always shooting. The camera needs down time to charge. The good, is that it can charge in small chunks during the day, but it does need down time.

BTW, I just ordered a Canon DR-E6 coupler dummy battery. I can not wait to end this power management stupid stuff.

Peace

The DR-E6 has a circular connector. The Anker PD pack has a USB-C connector, so how do they tie up to charge the camera?
