A few more wide open shots on Sony. I think the swirls have something to do with field curvature as well. The Sony thick sensor might amplify the swirl effect. Don't know if Leica sensor will look different.

robsonj, I don't use a Leica 6 bit coding for my 50/1.5 II and unless you use Jpegs I recommend you do the same. A Leica 6 bit code by its nature is an inaccurate lens profile meant for a totally different Leica lens. I turn my M body lens detection to "off" and in post rely on the Adobe raw lens profile specifically designed for the Voigtlander 50/1.5 II to process the images.

On the other hand, setting a profile is a useful aid memoir that a 50mm was used.

I have the older LTM version and it does swirl on M11. It's definitely smoother than your sample photos though.
Not sure if the optical formula is identical but I think so.

The old CV 50/1.5 LTM lens has 6 elements in 5 groups and the current 50/1.5 VM II has 8 in 7 groups, they are not the same exact optical formula.

Thanks for the link! Saved that for future needs
Thanks! That archive is an interesting page. It's an orphaned part of Cosina's old website that has no links to it from their current website, but it's still kept alive for the time being. Everything else from their old website was gone (or adapted / included in the new site) when the new website appeared a couple of years ago. I'm not sure if those archives will be kept there for a long time to come but so far so good

Any chance that this lens is about to get a design refresh ?
Closer focus and/or cosmetic update ?
B&H and Map camera are out of stock and Cameraquest is discounting.
I think if there was a design refresh, Cosina would discontinue current version II and release it as a new version III. However, since they pre-announced two other 50mm VM lenses at CP+, I think they would not bring out another new 50mm VM lens this year. Their lenses tend to run out of stock periodically since they do low volume production runs of their large lens catalog cyclically. There are also many others from their lineup that are out of stock at Map Camera currently...

I would be curious to see more samples of the S.C. version that would exhibit flares and veils or just backlit objects in the scenes.
I found when reading Fred’s review the difference between the M.C. and S.C. in rendering quite striking when playing with light and in favor of the S.C. version.

The quality of CV’s single coating (at least on the two lenses I have - 35/1.4 ver 1 and the 50/1.5 ver 2) is quite good…probably more comparable to 70’s/80’s multi-coating. The amount of flare is pretty minimal (compared to other modern single coated optics, like LLL).
And a comparison with another modern-made single-coated lens the LLL '1966' (both at f/2.8)...LLL is in color, so not a perfect comparison, but you can see that it flares more.

Yeah, the single coating from my Ultron 75 1.9 is more efficient than I would have liked but I can still manage to produce some colored rings and some pleasant veils, but not that easily.
The single coating of the Heliar Classic 50 1.5 let me do the same far more easily. I don’t know if they are the same or if it’s due to the optical formula and the glass.
I’m surprised the 35/1.4 would not flare more, I thought it was one of its famous traits. It was one of the main reasons I wanted to buy one(maybe the second version) to produce those orange rings.
Regarding the 50mm 1.5 II S.C., I noticed in Fred’s examples that the colors were far more pleasing with some backlit objects, it gave some variation in the shadows more true to perceived reality and more filmic or cinematic of sort.
Thanks for all the samples! I like that Voigtlander sometimes gives that choice in lenses, I wish they would not abandon that.
