p.21 #1 · Voigtlander 50mm f/1.5 II Aspherical Review

I used it recently with my new LM-EA9 and I think it worked relatively well on the adapter with my A7CII, among the best between the 50mm lenses I've used with the adapter so far. AF works generally well outside of center too but not to the far edges horizontally. It tends to work further when focusing on humans with eye or face AF than when trying to pick just any target with real time tracking. I also find it to be great on Sony in general.

I found this Nokton, the new 50/3.5 Apo-Lanthar and 50/1.5 Heliar classic to work well. My 50/2.2 and especially 40/2.8 (2014 version for Sony VM-E) worked less well, with AF being more restricted to central focusing area.

Some samples with the Nokton + LM-EA9 (all wide open or at f5.6): https://photos.app.goo.gl/GSTdmoPoTMKsQ9TWA

Does anyone use the Nokton 1.5 50 ii with the Techart AF adapter and can say something about how they work together? Does the AF also work reliably outside the center of the image?

B&H. It’s $700 for the nickel, $750 for the silver, and the black is oos.

Edit: Someone must’ve bought it/them. It’s marked as discontinued now.

That's why I got confused since I saw it was discontinued at B&H.

It baffles me that the SC nickel version was scraped from their line-up, for what I understand it was not unpopular. It might actually be their first lens to have gained value with time.
I’m looking for one too.

Good to know, I’ve seen them sold priced higher not long ago, it came back to what it was.
Still odd Voigtlander did cut that version though.

The SC images on film appeal to me. I have the MC version but haven't used it on film yet. Would Love to see more images captured by SC version.

For whatever reason (read: I have too many 50's), I don't use this lens enough...which is a shame. It's really quite nice. The size alone makes it phenomenal. A marked improvement over the version 1 in every way I can think of.

I keep forgetting to use this lens. The size is so marvelous and the image quality is compelling too. The first image (at 1.5) has enough softness to work for the subjects and the second image (at 2.8) is more punchy and doesn't show any meaningful focus shift on film (which is innate to the design of the lens).

Voigtlander did a great job designed this so balanced lens. Compact size, solidly built, swirly while smooth bokeh wide open. It is only very difficult to pick beteeen the SC and MC though. Will the SC version show more suble contrast than the MC ?

Fred compared the SC/MC in this review. The difference is fairly subtle. The SC version (the one I have) is really flare resistant when used with a hood (and compared to older single coated lenses). The only time you will really see any difference is shooting against the light - shadows will be more open and the color of the flare is different. I got the SC because I shoot mostly black and white and I am sucker for good marketing and more options.

Yeah the SC coating may be too good for some! My 50 1.5 II SC is far more flare resistant than my Summilux 50Asph or any of my Crons and all the Leica lenses are multi coated.

I recently got this lens and love it so far. The main downside is the flare (which can be quite bad - currently waiting on a lens hood) and the lack of a focus tab. I added a 7Artisans stick-on tab that that's been perfect.

Amazing size, weight, handling (now with the tab) and image quality for a reasonable price. It's a winner.

I quite like the flare though, many modern lens dont flare at all, the flare adds character to the image, the reason I would like to explore the flare property for SC version.

Some images took from Kyoto trip using the MC Nokon II. It is my travel companion choice for 50mm focal length.

Forgive me if this abs been covered, but I'm obsessed with the VM 35 1.5 nokton asph. Is this 50 going to be the closest in terms of rendering and sharpness ?

I do think that the VM 35mm f1.5 pair well with Nokton 50 f1.5 II. They are in both in small size also which make both lens very portable for shooting. I have the Black paint Brass 35mm and Nickle brass 50mm in my collection.

p.21 #18 · Voigtlander 50mm f/1.5 II Aspherical Review

I owned the first version of this lens. Liked it with the retro 50's design and the big, knurled focus ring but the aperture ring was thin and it was too large overall. I don't use the 50mm length very often with the little 2.5 Color Skopar as my main 50.
Last week I thought (briefly) about getting a M3, so I started looking at 50's. My 35 1.4 Nokton Classic SC V2 is my most used lens so when I saw the 50 1.5 used the same hood and was the same filter size, it was time for a 50 upgrade. The black SC's have disappeared so I bought a MC.
Oddly, part of the reason I bought it was to have a bit faster lens for a project with some K Mart color film that expired in 1984. Thanks for the great review and maybe I'll become more of a 50 fan.

I picked up a 50mm f/1.4 Summilux ASPH so I haven't been using the 50/1.5 as much. Still, it's an excellent lens...

These look nice ... I was gonna head out with my Nok today, but got sidetracked from it. Maybe tomorrow.

Would dig on seeing some "comp" shots between the Nok and Lux.
