p.17 #1 · Are you going to buy a Sony A7C?

Couple mornings ago I paddled uplake.
We have two GBHs living among us, I believe a mating pair
since I've seen them flying together and I believe GBHs are quite
solitary unless doing 'business'.
Here's one as it passed close to the kayak.

Been taking the A7C into the mountains some more.

Edit: The non-CPU lenses were 85/4 ZM (Leitax Adapter) and the 16/3.5 AI Fisheye Nikkor.

Still working the 7c+100400+1.4
The hummers are still here but we're already getting into the upper 40's so wont be long until they pack bags.
I did put the 2.0tc on the 7c+100400 and was pleasantly surprised. Got a Junco to post later.
The 7c has wormed its way into daily life here but I'm still looking forward to the a7iv.

Really good light the other day; for up here in the rain forest anyway.
And a brainstorm of trying the 2.0TC on the 100400. This was my mainstay on
the a9 and a combo I really liked.
My 2.0TC copy is better than my 1.4TC. Just the roll of the dice. Someday I think I'll
buy another 1.4 just so I know.

Anyway DEJs are a daily find. Getting a shot of one off the ground is the diligent part.
Unlike many that come and go the Juncos will be with me all winter.

Something else I noticed this same day, no necessarily with the 2.0+100400, I think it was
with the 1.4+100400, and that was a very small little green focus square on the eye. I didn't
even think the 7c had BEAF

What an amazing camera and a good looker. I bought it for my daughter. It should be paired with small lenses, even 55/1.8 looks big on it. Kit lens, 28-50 is the max size…

I hope Sony make a wide zoom for this…16-28 ?

Yes the camera fascinates me.
In a strange way it defeats the things I hate about it (not enough buttons/dials) with its image quality, weight and size.
In the last 2 months I've used it way more than the Alpha1.
The only place so far where the big brother has the decided advantage (in my world of shooting) is in deep space astro where I needed 2.5 min. exposure. I'm still head scratching on why
Sony cheaped out on the USB-C port and didn't give it multi capabilities.
But for dinking around in the yard and canoe it is fine. We've got a trip coming up and it will be the alpha's backup.

Great images!

I'm surprised that the smaller size/weight difference matters to you when it's attached to a (relatively) huge lens like the 100-400. Is the grip on the A1 not much better for holding/handling this combo? Or maybe you're on a tripod/monopod so it doesn't matter?

Graham my a1 has the grip (in my mind) permanently attached.
If I were to remove the grip it would be a moot point weightwise between the two bodies
versus each other for weight.
But the a7c+100400 is just fine for weight challenged me and very wieldable. I prefer that combo
over the a1+200600 for walkabout and the kayak.
Of course a Sony version of the Nikon 300PF would be incredible (I'd add the 1.4 to the carry).

Only time I've used either on a tripod is my limited attempts at the Milky Way.
Have used neither on a monopod but will on an eagle trip in December if the world allows.

Anyway back to fun here's the a7c+2.0tc+100400 at 800. Not bad but they can always be better eh, but yet another combo I'd choose on a sunny day in the kayak.

Another backpacking trip with the A7C, 21/3.5CV, 45/2.5G, and 85/4ZM.
Pretty happy with this camera so far for what I use it for.
Replaces the A7RIII on the trail to be lighter and smaller.

No surprise this is a capable body. @jhinkey you're putting that little CV 21/3.5 to great use. I knew I'd regret selling my copy

I might bite on the second version of this body. Make it more like an A6600 body – more custom buttons, much better grip, keep the extra dial and it's mostly there. As it is, I don't find it comfortable to use. I'd like a higher res sensor so I can shoot some APS-C lenses on occasion to keep weight down, but I could live with 24mp. For now, I'll stick with my A6600.

Love the images from the CV21. Just bought one And hope it arrives Friday before a travel trip to eastern WA. Going to sell my Tamron 17-28, 70-180 as I build out my small/light primes.
Currently have CV15, FE20, CV21, 35i, 45i, 65i, Batis 135. Was trying to choose between the new 90i or Loxia 85 and I see you have the 85/4ZM. What adapter do you use and does it pass EXIF? Are you happy with it? It is half the weight of the loxia which would be nice. Thanks

Honestly, based on the A7C's current pricing, I don't think we'll see a body like that. Sony has positioned the A7C at the entry level. Of course an A9 or an A7R IV in a rangefinder-style body would be great, but how would Sony price that? Seem like the rangefinder-style bodies have been put at the APS-C/entry level full frame end of the Sony price range so far.

I do miss the extra buttons/controls compared to my A7RIII, but I've eventually configured things to be functional. The viewfinder is a step back for sure, but it's totally functional (especially for those of us that are very far-sighted with our glasses on) and on par with the VF in my RX1RII.
Compromises are to be expected to get a lighter and smaller (but still remarkably rugged) full frame body.

I agree it is not as comfortable as the A7R2/3/4s I owned but the camera is in my hands for a brief period of time while I take a picture while hiking or traveling .. I am not shooting hundreds of images for sports, event, etc and I have selected small, light lenses so the balance is good. Fortunately there are some really good lens with aperture rings and AF/MF switches .. everything else I might need I have on Custom menus or custom buttons and I have programmed the Memory Recall which is awesome.

I like the shape and size of the body, the AF and the IQ generally (I would prefer the a7r3 sensor). I am less fond of the lack of buttons, EVF and 1/4000 shutter. So I use it and appreciate it, but don't love it. Reminds of the RX1 line back in the day, though tech has gotten much better over 10 years.

I can put up with a lot of niggles, if the size is right. For a FF camera, the size is right. Fingers crossed we get a better EVF and 2/3 more external buttons on the next iteration.
