p.2 #1 · Are you going to buy a Sony A7C?

I don't need more gear, but more time to use what I have, alas time to take pictures has been hard to come by as of late.

I said I would buy later when the price drops, but it is really I will buy later because I want to check out the EVF and make sure I can live with it. I am not in a big hurry to buy this camera because I want it primarily as a travel camera and my travel is very limited because of COVID-19.

If true, the rumored 50MP Sony a9 will be my next Sony camera purchase.

As far as the A7c, I am not in the market for small and compact photography kit as I already have that covered with my FF Leica system. I am however, very interested to see how well the A7c sells as Sony mentioned they feel there is a lot of opportunity in the Vlogger market. Should be interesting to see how this new approach rolls out.

I might but going to wait and go try one first. Want to read and hear some reviews once people start using it. I also want to try the EVF and see if its something I can deal with. Was going to pick up an A6600 ( again) but decided to hold off. I have the A9 and R4 but just want a smaller camera to accompany them or as an alternative. On the other side of the coin I could really use the new Sigma 85mm 1.4 and budget says its one or the other.

It’s not for me. If I want small and light for travel etc, I’ll use my A6000 18-135 and 10-18. I wished Sony would have put the R&D effort into their APS-C products.

I think there should have been a fourth option in the poll for those who aren't buying the camera not because of its price tag but because the camera is severely crippled down in features. I belong to this group and I see some other people not buying it for similar reasons. As someone who favors a small RF form factor camera, I am not buying A7c because I find it underwhelming in some features and aspects I find important:

i) It lacks a thorough touch interface.
ii) It lacks customization buttons, second dial, joystick.
To a lesser importance (for me, personally):
iii) The EVF needs to be improved. Even the back LCD is just so so.
iv) The top shutter speed of 1/4000s is for mid to low level cameras. It doesn't match the price tag of A7c. Though, I have to say if the electronic silent shutter performs just as well as the one in A9, I don't mind if the mechanical shutter is completely omitted (making the camera even lighter than what it is now!)
v) The IBIS on all the Sony cameras I have had so far is just so so. A7c's IBIS is even weaker. Though this is not an important factor for me as I have learned not to rely much on it. If the new software IBIS implementation for video that is in A7s iii has found its way into A7c, that can be super handy.

For me to buy the camera, at least one of the first two conditions must have been met.

Moreover, as a camera particularly useful for street photography or as a run&gun camera or a camera that remains with the (urban) photographer all the time the performance of the silent electronic shutter becomes important. Ideally being able to perform adequately under all artificial light (similar to A9) is great to have.

The body built quality seems to be decent from what I have read so far (though nobody has explicitly examined it for confirmation yet).

I'll get the a7cII when they add an extra dial and normal EVF

I voted for the second option as I am in a wait and see mode. I do have a pre-order for a rental as soon as Lensrentals has them available. I am very interested in a more compact body and do like the FAS lcd but am concerned about the lack of front dial, joystick and custom buttons. The price is a bit more than I was expecting as well. If the 28-60 lens turns out to be decent that could push me over the edge especially if a holiday sale comes up.

After shooting with A9 for almost 2 years it has become painful for me even think of buying a camera that does not fully support electronic shutter. Depending on mechanical shutter is understandable in A7r type hi rez landscape camera, but in the class of 24mpx not so.

Sony made A9 too good Everything else is kind of lame compared to it.

On another note, only %10 of people on FM site have so far indicated they will be buying it for sure. Considering FM is one of the forums where people have been generally positive or neutral about this camera, this may be an indication the camera may not sell well because in some other sites (DPReview, SAR) people have been generally negative about the camera. This is despite the fact, many Youtube camera reviewers (paid Sony artisans?) have been silent about the shortcomings of the camera.

I certainly don't believe in the Sony's marketing bluff: to bring a small ff camera and think masses are going to buy it at an overinflated price tag regardless. This camera is severely crippled down in features. The way, Sony speaks about it, they think they have done a revolutionary job, lol. We are not in 2013 anymore when Sony was the only option for whoever wanted a small ff body (the debut of the A7 series). Now people have options: Canon, Nikon, etc..

At the end of the day, people would compare this camera to other cameras in the same price level or lower. They will then decide whether it's worth paying $1800 for it or there are better alternatives (regarding performance/price ratio). Budget conscious consumers who don't pay much attention to the features (and don't read online forums) yet, want a ff camera would compare this to Canon RP or Nikon Z5 and then, the choice may be obvious. Even if we assume vloggers nowadays constitute a significant market sector, they also have many options to choose from and a $1800 Sony is still far from an obvious choice just because it has got a rotating screen.

Well if this camera is targeted at the vlogger community...that leaves most of FM members out. Might be a different answer on a vlogger forum.

At this moment more than 33% are going to buy the A7c.
... And I assume most of them already have an A7xx camera.
... And before the first ambassador reviews claiming this is a masterpiece and you must buy this camera.

Looks like a huge success...

The poll is pretty telling. There are some very vocal people scoffing at specs but in reality, specs don't always sell the camera. It's all about the use case

Not a fan of the form factor, personally.

For quick, mobile photography I’ll just use my phone.

While I do like the form factor of the a7C, I completely agree that if I want a quick picture, that is what my iPhone is for.

With that said, my a7RIII is more than enough for me. I'm not a pro, so I don't need a second body. Definitely intriguing though.

My A7RII is still going strong, so I am not in need of a camera. Though, I have some video work that wasn't on my radar when I bought into the A7 series long ago. My video work could use another camera, but that's secondary to photography. What appeals to me about the A7C is the smaller size, which has been my strong desire from the get go. I tried an RX1 camera for a while to get smaller (e.g., for travel). Travel has been cut off for me during covid19, so I am not in a hurry. But I'll be watching the reviews come in on this A7C. If I follow through, I'll likely get the Loxia 35/2 or the Voigtlander 35/1.4 Emount. I want to see some folks review manual focus lenses on the A7C.

Not going to get the A7C.

I do like the form factor, but I already pair my A7riv with my A6500 and its APSC lenses when I need a second, compact, camera.
If I didn't have the 6500, I might think about the A7C if Sony comes out with compact lenses. Its the whole package, body and lens, that have to be compact and lightweight for it to make sense

I've been waiting on this for a long time—downsizing was one of the reasons I got the OG A7R + 55 ZA. Currently, the lack of:

  1. Direct focus controls
  2. A 35/40 both as good and as small as my 55

are all that's holding me back. I'm sure I'm nitpicking the 35 1.8 options, as the image thread has shown it's certainly capable—just not to my taste. The 45 is more to my taste, and would probably be enough if the SA didn't interfere with AF-C, it had more thorough sealing, & it was at least an f2. I might cave anyway with either of them, as I have wanted so long a camera that was anywhere close to this compact and capable—and a standard I could just almost permanently attach to the package while at the same time not worrying about it in inclement conditions & have some close up abilities would be icing on the cake.

If the 40 were more compact, I would have preordered. If the 35 were at least on par with the 55 I would have preordered. Same for the 45... etc. This is an extremely attractive package, but it just lacks the right lens for me atm. The second that comes out... the lack of direct focus controls might not matter for me. Wishful thinking right now is that Sigma releases another compact wonder on the 30th

Nope. Like the concept but will wait for version 2. In the meantime this convinced me to repurchase the Rx1rii. Been like 3 years since I sold mine. Forgot how small it really is. Still hoping someday we get an Rx1riii.

Disappointed. I really wanted to get a small compact full frame for travel/backpacking and biking but this is not what I was hoping for. It is too heavy at 500g+

Could have and should have come in under 400g.

An A7R or A6100 offer a lighter camera that is better for my needs.

I think Steve Jobs or Dr. Maitani would have pushed for a smaller and lighter body.

Maybe Sony comes in with a lighter version later.
