p.7 #1 · R5 overheating is horrible ....

Personally my thoughts were to use this camera for both stills and video. When I shoot video, 99% of the time shooting 4k @120p. Why? Wildlife and birds. It really is a great way to catch the moment. I currently use a Z Cam for this.

The bottom line is that no external recorder at present records 4k@120p. This makes the camera unusable for what I do and even if an external recorder would record at 4k@120p, it would make things kludgy while working outdoors.

It's really too bad about the R5. My hopes have been shattered. Leaning towards the A7SIII at

If you are considering a A7SIII then you weren't looking for a stills camera to begin with. 12mp is pretty sad for a stills camera in 2020, and particularly sad compared to the 45mp of the R5 or even the R6 or 1Dx3 (12mp is a 40% reduction vs 20mp).

Hey, but at least you'll capture some larger features of those animals at 120fps.

Why not? for professional video work @ 4k 120 or 8k, is there a better option with equivalent still features that is cheaper?

In its current state, you would need 3 or 4 cameras since the camera takes hours to regain record lengths.

So you buy a stills camera and a cine camera for the video work. That is two cameras.

Yes... it is called blackmagic pcc 6K
Canon ef mount.
Has 2.7K &120
Great color straight out of camera.
Can be mounted on a ronin s gimbal.
Can record straight out to approved ssd or an Atomos ninja v.
Sensor is a super 35
Down side.... slow AF.

Other option is Sony a7riv

You can buy an A7s III and an A7r IV and you will be covered much better than 2x R5s.

And still have problems with overheating on the A7s. Just buy a dedicated cine camera like the blackmagic someone above posted about. Sony isn't the answer to everyones problem. I for one am overwhelmingly happy that there are many other camera and video camera manufacturers than Sony.

Thanks, canon may loose the videographers to them, heck, I still have my moon though the champagne is long gone.

But no 8k there in the Sony, which I do value and I am looking forward to, YMMV. If Cine camera is what you need, get the blackmagic.

So 8K to allow cropping? it is not a viewing thing....

Yet. But for trips that are once in a lifetime / decade / whatever, capturing memories 8k would be pretty sweet. I would not want more than 2-3 minutes at a time anyways, so for my needs, 15 minutes is forever. That will change in a few years, but for now this is plenty.

And then, there's the "unknown".

So there's an undeniable heat problem that can result in the inconvenience of shorter video sessions, and/or "momentary" Camera shutdown; but can excessive heat cause a long term detrimental effect, that may not be evident until after the Warranty has expired?

One of the largest Canon fans switching to the A7s III due to the very real overheating problems with the Canon R5 and the much more useful video capabilities of the A7s III.

Keep in mind, these are people that use Canon cinema cameras, and even stood by the EOS R as their small video camera.

Now they are switching to the Sony A7s III. How long till this has ramifications on cinema line sales? Not going to be fun trying to match A7s III and C300 footage when you could swap out the C300 for an FX camera.

Wouldn't the R6 be a closer match to the A7sIII? And it seems like one has to use 4K24 on the R5 to be happy enough as a hybrid shooter.

He doesn't look that large. I kid I kid.

I am not sure why anyone is comparing the a7s3 to the r5. They are not in the same category. If you need an r5 then an A7s3 is probably not going to work and vice versa. The R5 is comparable to the 5d4, a7r4, d850, and z7. I would say the 1dx3 or r6 would be the cameras to compare to the 12mp Sony, but even then they are made for different uses. I

I can understand the frustration with the video recording issues and the r5, but that being said I don't consider the 5d camera video centric, but rather video capable. Who knows maybe Canon will make a video camera, oh wait they do.

Momentary shutdown? I've heard hours.

At room temperatures the "cooldown" time is unacceptably long. It's truly absurd.

Saw your latest video. Very nice work. You have an amazing gift. Did you notice that weird square on the left side in your compilation sequence? It only appears for alike a second.

So if I don’t do any video, you think I’m ok?

I really don’t want to return it.

Cheers man

Thank you so much!! Man they get so hot , you can’t even hold them! It’s weird that after 2 minutes they are cool to the touch, put it back in and , no recovery time helped. Maybe canon just has a timer they can tweak .... I hope so!
