I did a test today. From a cold start , Delkin 512 card. 4k 120 , 14 minutes total , as expected. 6 hours later , only 5 more minutes I can record!! Unacceptable!
On my photo shoot 2 days ago I shot 45 minutes or so photos inside at 68 degrees. Camera was turned off in between set ups.
Went to shoot some 4k 120 and I had 4 minutes on the clock.
Totally not going to fly
Hopefully the tilta fan will work if canon can’t fix this to make it an acceptable feature.
1080 120 must be added as well!
The footage was incredible, I’m just not going to buy multiple bodies to use it.
Wedding videography, music videos , YouTube... there really is a huge market.
The thing is, no matter what mode you want that overheats, once you take a few photos in the coolest scenarios , it will cut that time in half, or much more than half in my case. And it won’t recover for hours...
It wasn’t I who marketed this as the video king....
it can’t even do 1080 120..... somebody is not thinking at all.
1dx mkiii makes far more sense as a video camera at this point.

Who is using 120 commercially? Is that for slow-mo?
Didn't the original marketing say that it could do 1080 at 120fps? I seem to distinctly remember that.
Some have said that the shutdown is not related to heat at all. If you were to change the date/time after each video segment, could you fool the firmware to allow more time recording video?
A few people said canon were going to add it in a firmware update.
I might try to change the date and time but I will say the cfexpress card gets incredibly hot....
But there is no way it takes 8 hours to cool down internally.
Canon is limiting something internally.

Delkin warns you to switch out cards and to check them periodically since they heat up drastically using super high data rates.
This an unbelievable flaw. I use a camera in an underwater housing and regularly went back and forth between photo and video. So if I shoot photos while diving I will be cut to a few minutes of video. as the camera is "always on" in the housing. Then, if I shoot "too much" video all image making is done for the remainder of the dive. And, worst of all, I don't know when the shutdown will happen if I am back in stills mode?
Lots of similar scenarios could happen in nature/wildlife photography. I don't even want to imagine what folks like wedding and event photogs must be thinking.
I am a canon shooter and was really, really looking forward to this camera, but it is still the case that their entire FF mirrorless camera line so far is an epic fail.
Yes! Unless you shoot 4k 30 not hq mode, your scenario would be a total nightmare at this stage.
The only thing that brings me any hope is that it is so incredibly bad it’s a total joke to the point that no company could leave it in this state.

The heat is real based on the EXIF data. Changing the clock that may be fooling the system and potentially causing more damage.
Well the 1dx ii was fine , 1dxiii is fine... I do believe they can fix it. They just need a public outcry, they have to know leaving it like this will impact them financially

Seems like it would be better to return the R5 and put that money toward a dedicated video camera.

I have heatsinks and a large fan on my computer's NVMe M.2 SSDs. Without a heatsink they would throttle under full load. Is there anything to help dissipate heat from the PCe cards to the surroundings?

If Canon didn't have higher end video cameras, your comment could be easier to entertain. Meanwhile, there's a myriad of reviews out from the past few weeks, so folks can use it or leave it.
I'm guessing that folks more serious about video will implement techniques to work with the camera's present capabilities.
I wouldn’t be so sure, considering the marketing, and expectations. How many hybrid shooters do you think would have purchased if canon would have said... “oh yea, if you take a few still photos , you can shoot 1-3 minutes of 4k...
It’s going to have to be fixed.
Sony, other canon bodies like the 1dx series and even nikons all can shoot without overheating for long periods.
Even when I had my Sony, it was the one that overheated a lot, but 2 minute cool down and I’m back to shooting.
It’s not going to go over well for them if they don’t fix it.
Give lower bit rate options in 4k 120.... offer a 1080 120 as well.
I actually think if they fix this , it will be my favorite camera possibly ever. Photography side is incredible. Video files are incredible, just unusable.

I was a potential purchaser of the R5. However one of the reasons the price is steep is the video feature. This feature appears to not be working as intended so until this is resolved so purchasers are getting what they are paying for - I am out of the "purchase" group...... It is disappointing to see Canon come out with a camera that seems to be a fail in the area that was it's selling feature.
