Stan, are you shooting MS here... don't see any distortion on the baseball...
Yes, these were shot with MS, simply because there's no way to throttle the frame rate to something sensible. I shot some photos with ES the previous week, but none that I have posted.
Out of curiosity, Swalke16, how is the "hit rate" with dragonflies with the R5? I've taken a number of shots of them over the years with the 5D4, but the hit rate is pretty dismal at times. It doesn't help that they won't always pose for me.

These were mostly done with spot AF mode because the targets were stationary. If you get the subject large enough in the frame though the animal detect AF will actually pick them up and even sometimes hit on the eye. I've had it pick ones up and track them in the air as well, but they buzz around so fast I can't keep them in the frame.
Camera arrived this evening and I have a lot of learning to do. First shot at twilight, handheld 500 mm f/4 IS II + 1.4x TC at f5.6 (wide open), 1/500 sec (low), ISO 12,800 (bad). Cropped ~50%, processed in DPP to .tiff, Topaz Denoise AI (AIC, Med/High), then tonality adjusted, vignette added. Would have never nailed this shot with the 5dmkiv.

Would love to hear your thoughts on the rf 800mm lens...
First of all, this is my opinion, and I'm not to the level of most on here but here goes.
It's light, really light, which is a joy to shoot. I've read that the IBIS on the R5 works with the IS of the lens and I've read that they don't work together on that lens so I don't know which is correct, but I can say that it is possible to get sharp shots at 1/400th and even slower SS s which is just amazing at 800 mm at 1100 mm with the 1.4X. The handholdablity of this lens is like nothing I've ever used. The way the size adjusts for carrying to make it smaller is really nice too meaning you can use a smaller bag. I don't find the f11 to be a big deterent. on the bare lens. The biggest annoyance of the lens is the MFD of 20 feet. You just keep backing up. Finally you are so far back to get focus that you have to crop deep. And these are the type of things you would grab the 100 400 II for without a thought. Another negative for me is the quality of shots with the 1.4X. I won't use it much for this because there is just too much detail loss with it. Whether it is because the F16 pushes the ISO so high, I haven't had enough time to determine exactly why.
Final thoughts, For the price, size, weight, I think it's a winner. I wouldn't want it to be my only wildlife lens and I am adding the 100 500 which I'll use the 1.4X I just bought with when needed, but I've about decided I enjoy it enough to keep it. Final decision will be that week I get (hopefully) the 100 500 to decide if they complement each other or it's (100 500) so good I'll never pick the 800 up since it will also be very light and have a MFD of 3 feet. . I think one of the saving things with it is the Image Stabilization being so very good. I think they screwed up royally with the MFD and most of us would have been happy to pay more for a more reasonable one.. I also still own the 400 DO II and 1.4X and 2.0 X to go with it so it won;t ever be my only choice and I'll have faster available, but I think it'll have it's place. ...Show more →
Robert - that 400 DO II and the R5 would make an awesome combo! You have to get the R5 .... or give me right of first refusal on your 400 DO II!

Rob I really didn't read what I just read Even though I shifted to Sony and Fuji there lies a 400DOii about 3 feet from where I'm typing.

A quandary the DOii puts me in. I've been waiting on Sony to fresnel up/get something out that's diffractive. Doesn't look they are going to take the hint of the 500PF popularity, and Fuji's alluded to 300 and 500 DOE lenses.
Quandary no. 2. Sony's latest FW update has the A7Riv singing a different tune with the 200600.
A puzzle indeed.
BUT if I do sell the 400DOii, it's value is going back up now all the R5's are out. Many are seeing what you're seeing Bobby, a wonderful combo to be had. Truthfully if I lived in Canada I'd have already shipped my copy to Geoff

Looks like a great combo: R5 + EF 100-400 II + You
Nicely done...great images....
Thank you. Been shooting with the 100-400 I for few decades as birding was the first thing I got into when I started photography. Gave up for a few years till the lockdown here in India, end of March and subsequently upgraded to the 100-400 II which is a great improvement. Been shooting birds that come to the house and my terrace with it and my 5D Mark 4. Now with the R5 which I purchased on July 31st, 2020 from my local dealer. Its a great combo.
